I saunter into Hilltop and swing past the counter to the kitchen. I know he’s here. He’s always here on a Friday or Saturday night.
Except when I push in the swinging door, I catch him with his wife pressed against the wall and her hand down his pants.
“Aren’t you supposed to be making pizzas?” I’m not leaving but dig my fists into my hips.
“Fuck, Soph.” Sawyer turns away quickly.
Val starts laughing maniacally and adjusts her shirt.
“Just wash your hands.” I throw mine up and push back out to the bar. “I’m stealing a root beer as payment for emotional damage!” I call over my shoulder.
I give zero shits that they got busted. Seeing my brother happy is great. I just don’t want to see his happy ending.
Because…gross.
Also, I really want that damn pepperoni and cheese sticks. These cravings are no joke.
The cold rush of sugar helps a little as I prop my butt on the stool just inside the edge of the bar.
When Val appears, she carries the white plastic bag over.
I don’t hide my frown. That is not big enough to hide a pizza in.
“He’s coming.” She waves her hand, then smirks. “Well. He would have if you hadn’t interrupted—”
My nose wrinkles. “Ew. I might not have morning sickness but that may change things.”
She laughs and pulls out a tray, adding a few drinks before picking it up and heading towards the main floor. “You’re the one who busted in.” She blows me a kiss, then sashays away.
Fuck, I love her.
“Here.” Sawyer slides the greasy box onto the counter next to me. His cheeks are still all pink like he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
“Did you call Cade?” I pull out one of the cheese sticks and start to blow on it.
“Yea. He said when he comes up this fall we can go through the details.” He tilts his hat. “I think he’ll go for it. I mean, we might as well?”
“As long as we all keep pooping out kids, we’ll need the land.” I rub my noticeable belly. “I started running the numbers. It just makes sense.”
His bottom lip pokes out and he nods. “It’s just a lot of responsibility.”
I might tease the shit out of him whenever I can but I don’t this time.
Instead I reach out to touch his arm. “I know we can do this. Dad worked his ass off for years to build Black Gulch to what it is. We have an opportunity to make this one of the biggest ranches in Montana. We can build a legacy.”
The corner of his mouth lifts as his eyes find Val out amongst the tables. “Yea. I like that idea.”
