1. Lonely Yearning #3
I carefully place him back into his crib, tucking the blanket around him and ensuring he’s comfortable. As I turn away, a yawn escapes me. I make my way back to the bed, each step heavy with exhaustion.
As I slide under the cool sheets, contentment washes over me as my head hits the pillow, and I surrender to the beckoning call of sleep, knowing that in a few hours, Liam would wake up, ready to start a new day, and I’d be there, ready to give him all the love and care he needs.
As morning light filters through the curtains, rousing me from sleep, I’m greeted by the sound of Liam’s soft coos coming through the baby monitor. I quickly attend to him, changing his diaper and dressing him in a cute onesie before sitting down to feed him.
Feeding him is a quiet, intimate moment, his tiny hands clutching my fingers as he nurses. Once he’s content and burped, I put him in his carrier and head over to my mother‘s house. When we arrive, Mom is already sipping her morning coffee. She’s always been an early bird.
On spotting us, her face brightens, and she quickly sets her mug aside to shower Liam with morning cuddles. He giggles and coos in response to her playful antics, his tiny body wriggling with delight. It’s a heartwarming sight.
As Mom gets ready to leave for work, I appreciate the fact that I have the day off from work today.
The prospect of having some quality time with Liam without the rush of workday routines fills me with joy.
After Mom leaves, I settle comfortably on the couch, and relish the rare tranquility of the morning.
I scoop Liam onto his tummy, laying him on his favorite colorful mat. “Alright, little man,” I say to him, admiring the determination in his bright eyes, “tummy time it is!” He grunts slightly, his little arms pushing him up. I cheer him on, my voice filled with encouragement and pride.
Just then, my phone rings. A smile instantly blooms on my face as I see Reid’s name flashing on the screen.
“Hello, handsome,” I answer, my voice a mix of longing and joy.
“Hey, baby. How’s everything?” Reid’s voice comes over the line, a soothing sound that brings comfort and a sense of familiarity.
“Well, your little man and I are indulging in some tummy time,” I reply, glancing at Liam as he coos, absorbed in his new world.
“That’s awesome. Send me a few pics, will you? And maybe a video,” Reid requests. I can hear the anticipation in his voice, a testament to the love he has for his son.
As our conversation continues, Reid delves into his classes, explaining the complexities of his latest project in a way that only he can. His enthusiasm for technology never fails to amaze me. Then, his voice takes on a softer tone as he shares his excitement about coming home for winter break.
“I miss you guys,” he confesses, the longing in his voice palpable.
“And we miss you,” I say, reassuring him.
The conversation soon turns sensual, his words turning flirtatious, hinting at the intimacy he misses. I blush, my heart fluttering at his words.
“I can’t wait either, Reid,” I confess, looking forward to his homecoming.
Reid will be home for a week for Christmas, sending a thrill of excitement coursing through me.
I can already envision the three of us, our little family, together once again.
The way Liam’s face will light up when he sees his dad, the warmth of Reid’s embrace wrapping me in a cocoon of love, the whispered conversations late into the night, and the intimacy that we’ve both been craving since the night before he left.
A blush creeps onto my cheeks as precious memories wind their way through my thoughts.
I can almost feel the intensity of Reid’s gaze, the brush of his lips against mine, and the profound connection we share.
An understanding so profound, it’s more than just physical.
For a moment, I’m lost in the memory, my heart beating faster.
Reid’s voice, steady and reassuring, cut through my thoughts, pulling me back to reality.
“Amelia, sweetheart, I wish I could talk longer, but I have to head to my next class.”
His words send a tiny pang of disappointment through me, but I understand. “Of course, Reid, you go ahead. Don’t want to be late.”
There’s a pause, and then his voice comes back, softer this time, the words heavy with emotion. “I love you, Amelia. So much.”
The sincerity in his voice warms my heart, and I can’t help the smile that pulls at my lips. “I love you, too, Reid. More than you’ll ever know.”
I can hear the smile in his voice as he responds. “That’s a lot of love then.”
With a soft, final goodbye, we hang up, the lingering warmth of our conversation wrapping around me like a blanket. His voice, his love, and his presence, even if only over a phone call, ground me and fill my day with a sense of joy and anticipation.
Even though we’re miles apart, our love continues to grow, defying the distance between us. We just have to continue taking it one day at a time, until we can finally be where we want to be in our lives.
