Chapter 32

David tried calling Paige back several times, but it went straight to voicemail each time. Beyond aggravated, he drove to his mom’s house to pick up Jacob, since it was getting close to his bedtime.

“Did you talk to her?” Valerie asked the minute he walked in the door.

“Yes and no.”

David told her what had happened, getting even more angry as he re-lived it.

“I can’t believe she would sell the house and not tell you. It really doesn’t sound like her,” Valerie said with a frown. “But then, again, she didn’t tell you about the book, either.”

“She said she emailed me about selling the house, but I never got it. And she also said that I replied to it …”

“That’s weird.”

“I know.”

“So, now what?”

“Well, she’s not answering any of my calls and since I don’t know where she lives anymore, I’ll have to try and see her at work,” he said, hoping like almighty hell that she was still employed at The Main Event, otherwise he’d have to spend some time trying to track her down. “I’ll go in the morning.”

“I know you’re upset with her, because of the book and the house, but when you talk to her, please be nice.”

“I’ll be as nice as I can.”

“I mean it, David. I don’t want you being mean to her.”

“She can hold her own, Mom, so you don’t need to worry about me being mean to her. In fact, you should probably be worrying about her being mean to me.”
