Chapter Fifty-Two

Fifty-Two

Dear Mrs. Claxton,

Thank you for your letter. Forgive me for taking so long to answer. I was delighted to learn you’re offering the literacy program again this year. It seems like only yesterday when we walked your streets to solicit patrons!

We moved back to Troublesome in June after the Court’s ruling, and finally got electricity up here! It’s been a task fixing up the ol’ Carter homestead. But Jackson and Elijah Jack built additions onto the cabin, and we are finally settling in.

My former supervisor, Eula Foster, retired from her library position, and in August, I was approached by the Committee to run the Troublesome Creek Free Public Library.

I’m pleased to write that our borrowing branch has just received, of all things, a motorized bookmobile!

It appears a machine shop cut out the sides of the sturdy vehicle and then a cabinetmaker cleverly built shelves.

Honey passed her Driving Exams and is licensed.

She is smitten with her paneled library truck and its new-fangled pulls and knobs.

I was thrilled to hear your news of Susan’s upcoming wedding to Eric. I, too, wish Reverend were alive to see it. We remain grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Loving, and for the Supreme Court’s decision and our newfound freedoms and fortunes.

I pray the laws of the land will continue to change and favor all one day.

With a grateful heart, your friend,

Cussy
