Chapter 8
“Domino”
“The meeting you have with the girl,” I said, leaning back in my chair, “I want to sit in on it. I want eyes and ears on the whole thing. I’ll watch the conversation from the surveillance room with the cameras hooked up with audio.”
I trusted my own eyes more than any file, background check, or recommendation.
I always liked to size people up in person before bringing them anywhere near our operation.
I needed to see who would flinch at the slightest pressure, who would lie about the simplest question, and who pretended they were tougher than they really were.
People’s masks always slipped when I was in the room.
Although, I wouldn’t be in the room with her, though—close enough.
Marcos chuckled. “So you’re basically gonna be in my ear the whole time.”
My mouth twitched—my version of a smile.
“If I feel like it. I need my own view of her, not just yours. When she gets there, run her through protocol, and ask what you normally ask, but keep it clean… no extra shit. Don’t change your tone and don’t baby her.
I want to see her raw reactions. I can talk to you through the comms, but she’ll never know. ”
“Aight. I’ll run it exactly how you want it.”
“Good. Alejandro is trusting us with this. We’re not sending some idiot on his routes. I want the perfect mule, and so does he. If she’s not it, we move on.”
Marcos gave a low whistle. “High standards today.”
I stayed calm, confident, and in full command. “I always have high standards.”
He let out a short laugh. “Then let’s hope she’s worth your time.”
I’ll know within the first sixty seconds whether she belongs in our world or if she’s walking into something she won’t survive.
