The Night The Mistletoe Died
Prologue
PROLOGUE
LUKE
Manchester – England
W hen fifty-three thousand people fall silent, it’s as if time stands still. As I lie on my back, staring up at the concerned faces peering down at me, it’s as if I’m one of those patient observers.
It doesn’t even hurt. Ricky’s expression tells me I should be worried – but I’m not. If anything, I’m numb to it.
The coach shakes his head and nods to the team, who signals for a stretcher. My ankle throbs but the adrenalin is acting as a heavy dose of pain relief.
I don’t even consider the implications of my fall. I twisted my ankle – big deal. I probably tore a hamstring in the process. It will heal.
Coach shakes his head and whispers in my ear, “There’s nothing to worry about, Luke. We’ll take care of it.”
His expression tells a different story, but the pain is now firmly in charge and as the medics head onto the field, the silence from the crowd is more deafening than their cries.
It’s as if this moment changes my life. I’m not sure why. As I’m lifted onto the stretcher and carried from the field, the noise from the crowd is unleashed and serenades my exit from the field of dreams into an uncertain future and oddly the only emotion I’m experiencing now is relief.
