55. Briar
brIAR
I drive down the mountain in the morning and register Calloway Bond Mediation, and the clerk gets the spelling right the first time, which I choose to take as an omen.
The certificate lists my name with no county department above it. I check it twice, sign once, and walk out of the records office holding the second-most important document of my day.
Halewood comes into view around the last bend the same as it did the first time, three stories of dark timber against the mountain, except now the pavilion frame stands gold beyond it and every east-side window is lit.
The woman driving isn’t here to assess anything.
I chose this. Nobody defined one clause of it without me.
All three of them are on the porch.
Rhys is in the dark green shirt. Soren’s out of his kitchen clothes, which I’ve seen perhaps twice all winter.
Gideon’s collar is open, my mark above it, worn in daylight on his own front porch.
They stay behind the rail while I park, three men holding a line I drew at breakfast, and my heart is going hard enough that the arc’s probably broadcasting it to one of them already.
I get out, walk to the bottom step, and deliver my terms while I’ve still got the composure to deliver anything.
“Before anyone asks, hear me. The hearing didn’t decide my answer.
The amendment doesn’t decide it. I’m not joining this pack to repair a lodge, and I’m not rewarding anyone for testifying well.
” I look at each of them in turn. “I’m choosing this because I want it.
I keep my work, my money and my right to say no.
Nobody manages my health or my career without asking me first.”
“Agreed,” Gideon says, and the other two say it after him.
“Then I want each of you to ask me separately.”
I climb the steps. They wait, all three, until I’m standing on the porch, and that small obedience undoes me more than any speech is about to.
Rhys comes first, and his eyes are already wet, because of course they are.
“Briar Calloway, I love you. I want you living here permanently. I want to hold your car door until you threaten me with bodily harm, and I want to hear you purring through the floor while I’m working the desk, because it’s the best sound this building makes and I’ve got a decade of guest feedback to compare it against. Will you join this pack and choose me as one of your men? ”
“I choose you, Rhys.”
His breath comes out as a laugh. “That was fast.”
“Do you want me to reconsider?”
“Absolutely not.” His eyes drop to my mouth. “May I kiss you?”
“Kiss me.”
He takes my face in both hands and kisses me. He keeps it brief because Soren’s waiting. The effort of the brevity is visible from space.
Soren steps up when Rhys moves aside, and he asks it the only way he’d ever ask anything.
“I love you. There’s a place for you at my table and a station in my kitchen, and you don’t have to earn either one, not ever. I want to be the man you come home hungry to. Will you join this pack and choose me?”
“I choose you, Soren.”
His cedar rolls out across the porch, unbanked, and he doesn’t rein one bit of it in.
“May I kiss you?”
“Kiss me, Soren.”
He kisses me slowly, one hand settling at my waist, and takes the hand back when the kiss ends, because the man has never once assumed an inch he wasn’t given.
Then Gideon stands in front of me, and he doesn’t reach for me at all.
“I love you, Briar.”
“I know.”
“I’ve loved you since you refused to leave my mountain on the first day.
I spent months treating that as one more risk to manage.
Then I filed over your consent and planned to hurt you so I could control the result.
” His voice stays clear. It costs him, and he pays it standing.
“I’m sorry for every hour you spent wondering whether I trusted your judgment.
Using your history to frighten you was cruel.
I’ll keep apologizing when the harm resurfaces.
I’ll answer questions about that petition for as long as you have them.
And I will never again tell you my fear outranks your answer. ”
He takes a breath.
“This isn’t the end of the grovel. It’s the point where I ask whether you’ll let me continue it while loving you.”
“That is a very Gideon proposal.”
“Rhys offered to edit it.”
“You were right to refuse.”
Rhys objects from the rail. Soren tells him to wait.
“Will you join the Halewood pack and choose me,” Gideon says, “knowing what I did and what I’m doing to change it?”
I step in until our shoes almost touch, and I give the arc one second to carry everything before I say it out loud.
“I choose you, Gideon.”
His eyes close. Relief moves through his whole frame.
“Look at me.”
He opens them.
“I forgive you for the petition.”
His face changes as it lands, and I don’t let him fall into it.
“I haven’t forgotten it. Forgiveness means I believe the repair. It doesn’t remove the rule.”
“The rule remains.”
“Ask before you decide.”
“Every time.”
“May I kiss you?” I ask him, because with this one, today, the asking is mine to model.
“You may kiss me.”
I take his face in my hands and kiss him. His hands stay at his sides until I pull one to my waist. Then his fingers spread there and hold on.
The other two close around us the moment the kiss breaks. Rhys laughs into my hair. Soren’s hand comes to the back of my neck and holds, palm well clear of the gland. For a minute we just stand on the porch in the cold, breathing. Nobody performs one thing.
Inside, I hang my coat on the second brass hook.
The composition amendment waits on the hall table where Rhys left it, squared, the consent line blank.
“Spoken request first,” I say.
“As ordered,” Rhys replies.
I sign the consent line in front of the three of them. My hand is steady the whole way through my signature.
Gideon doesn’t touch the paper until I hand it to him.
“Naomi can file it tomorrow,” I say.
“Tomorrow,” he agrees.
Rhys hauls Soren toward the kitchen with an excuse about checking dessert that wouldn’t survive a form’s first field. The two of them go, loudly tactful, and nobody believes any of it, which is the point of family.
I turn to Gideon.
“Take me to your room.”
His pupils blow wide before he’s got hold of himself. “Are you sure?”
“Completely.”
“You don’t owe me this because you forgave me.”
“I know.”
“The bond can wait.”
“I know that too.”
“Then I need to hear why. Once.”
He’s earned the answer, so I give it whole.
“Because I want you. Because I want my mark renewed while I’m stone-cold sober, and I want to choose what the fever chose for me, with a clear head, in a bed, at length. And because I’ve been listening to you through a wall for months, Gideon, and I’m done with walls.”
His breath shakes. “May I touch you?”
“Touch me.”
He offers his hand, palm up. I take it, and I lead him up his own stairs.
His room is spare. A wide bed under a plain wool blanket, squared corners, and on the desk, in a shallow dish, sits a red scent strip. I ran every strip on this mountain personally, and the week of the re-test my count came up one short. I let it go at the time.
“You kept county property.”
“Chain of custody.”
“That excuse will fail under examination.”
“I’m prepared to grovel.”
“Keep preparing.”
I face him beside the bed and set the terms, because tonight the terms are the foreplay and we both know it.
“I want you in this bed. I want my teeth back on your throat when we come. Your bite waits for the full nest, all three of them present, so keep it off my nape no matter how good I feel.”
“Agreed. All of it.”
“If I say stop, you stop.”
“Immediately.”
“And if you need to stop?”
“I tell you.” The tension goes out of him as he says it, the last question he expected and the one that matters. “Nobody’s ever asked me that.”
“Get used to it.”
I put my fingers on his shirt buttons and raise an eyebrow, and he says “Yes,” rough, before I’ve asked anything, which is its own progress.
I open his shirt and push it off his shoulders.
Months of hauling wood and fighting boilers, and my faded mark at his throat.
He pulls my sweater over my head when I lift my arms, and his hands pause at my bra.
“May I?”
“Take it off.”
The clasp opens. He looks at my breasts with plain, unmanaged hunger, and it’s a good look on a man who’s spent a winter managing everything.
“You’re allowed to touch, Gideon.”
His palms cover me. His thumbs drag across my nipples, and my whole body answers. He says “Fuck” low against my hair.
“That’s less professional than anything you said at the hearing.”
“It wasn’t part of my testimony.”
“I remain impressed.”
He lowers his mouth to my nipple and sucks, hard enough that my breath goes ragged, his other hand working the other breast until I’m the one swearing. My slick’s gathering before he ever reaches the waist of my pants, and when his hand gets there, he pauses.
“May I?”
“If you ask permission for every individual garment we’ll be here till the county reopens. Undress me, and use your judgment.”
He laughs. Actually laughs, low and startled, into my throat. Then he strips the rest off me with excellent judgment indeed and goes to his knees on the floor.
“This is a very good position for you,” I tell him.
“I intend to make proper use of it.”
He lifts my thigh over his shoulder and puts his mouth on my pussy, and the first stroke of his tongue takes my knees out.
I brace on his shoulder. He works my clit slow and flat, no teasing, no showmanship, just thorough, the same terrible thoroughness he brings to everything.
When he looks up for the nod, I give it. Two fingers slide into me and curl.
“Right there. Don’t get creative.”
He doesn’t get creative. He keeps the rhythm exactly, fingers deep, tongue steady, and the orgasm builds fast and breaks hard, my hand fisted in his hair, his name out of me loud enough for the kitchen to log it. He works me through it until I push at his shoulder.
“Enough.”
He kisses the inside of my thigh and stands. I lie back on his bed and watch him strip. His cock is hard against his stomach, the base already thickening, and the sight of what a season of restraint looks like, undone, is one I intend to keep.
He comes over me and holds himself there, waiting.
“Say the wants,” I tell him. “Yours. Out loud, before I say mine.”
“You. This bed with you in it every night I’m alive. Your teeth in my throat and your name on my charter, and right now, your cunt around my cock until neither of us can spell county.” His voice drops. “And nothing you don’t offer. Ever.”
“Good. Then here are mine. Your cock. Your knot. My teeth over that faded mark when we come, and don’t you dare be gentle about what it means.”
I take him in my hand and guide him. He pushes in slow, all the way. The stretch pulls a sound out of me that the fever never got, because I’m here for every second of this one.
“Keep going. All of it.”
He seats himself deep and holds still, his forearms braced either side of my head.
“How are you?”
“Sober. Certain. Move.”
He moves. This is different from the heat, and the difference is the whole point. My head is clear. Every stroke belongs to a decision I made in a records office parking lot, on a porch, beside this bed. He watches my face the entire time. I let him see everything on it.
“Harder.”
He gives me harder, his thumb finding my clit, and the rhythm goes ragged at the edges, his control going.
“I love you,” he says.
“Show me you can follow instructions.”
“Harder?”
“More. All of it.”
He fucks me the rest of the way undone. His knot swells and catches at me on every stroke, and my body’s already tightening.
“Briar. I’m close.”
“So am I. Knot me.”
“The mark?”
“Bare your fucking throat, Gideon.”
He tips his head back, throat open, my faded mark offered up, and drives in once more. The knot pushes inside and locks. I come around him with my teeth already at his gland, and I bite down over the old mark, deliberate, sober, mine.
He comes with a sound I’ve never heard from him, wrecked and unguarded, and the bond opens wide in one direction, his side pouring through.
His pleasure. His relief, years deep. The love, which is the loudest thing in it, and no instrument the county owns could file what it reads like from the inside.
I release his throat and lick the mark clean, thorough, and he shudders through the whole of it.
He lowers himself to his forearms, careful of the knot, his forehead beside mine.
“Are you all right?”
“Very.”
“Did I follow instructions?”
“Eventually.”
He laughs, and I feel it everywhere we’re joined, which is a piece of information I plan to abuse for decades.
We stay locked while the knot holds. He pulls the blanket over us and reaches the water from the bedside table without leaving me, and after I’ve drunk, his finger traces the air an inch above the unmarked gland at my nape, not touching.
“Tomorrow?” he asks.
“Tomorrow. The full nest. All three bites, one at a time, everyone asked.”
“You’re sure.”
“I’m sure, and you’ll ask me again tomorrow anyway.”
“I will.”
“Good.”
Downstairs, Rhys drops a pan, and Soren swears at him with real feeling. The lodge goes on around us, which is the entire point of a lodge.
I stay in Gideon’s bed until his knot releases, my hand over the mark I renewed, both of us listening to our own house.
