CHAPTER NINE
Dana woke before the alarm. For several seconds, she remained motionless beneath the covers, aware of the emptiness beside her and the faint silver light gathering at the edges of the curtains.
Brynn had left shortly after midnight. She had stayed until Dana fell asleep, then returned to her apartment because arriving for limited duty from the presidential residence would invite questions neither woman was prepared to answer.
Her departure had been practical, careful, and entirely consistent with their agreement.
Dana had disliked it. She reached toward the pillow Brynn had used and found it cool.
Tomorrow, Brynn had promised. Tonight. Dana closed her eyes.
Desire moved through her before she was fully awake, sharpened by anticipation and the memory of Brynn's voice.
When I undress you, I do not intend to be interrupted.
Dana had spent years learning to hide every physical response beneath composure.
She could remain expressionless while receiving casualty reports, hostile questions, and intelligence assessments that altered the balance of power between nations.
A single remembered sentence made heat spread beneath her skin.
She opened her eyes and reached for the secure phone. No personal message waited.
That was appropriate. Brynn had returned to limited duty and would spend the day inside official systems. They had agreed not to use government channels for conversations that did not belong to the work. Dana knew that. She still checked again after breakfast.
* * *
The day moved with intolerable slowness.
Dana received the intelligence briefing, met with the education secretary, hosted a luncheon for several governors, and spent ninety minutes negotiating legislative language with congressional leaders determined to make every sentence prove their own importance.
She remained focused. Mostly. At eleven twenty, Monica stopped in the middle of outlining the afternoon schedule and looked at her.
"What?" Dana asked.
"You have checked the clock four times."
"I have another meeting."
"In forty minutes. You have spent the last three reading the same paragraph."
Dana looked down. The paragraph concerned rural broadband funding. She had, in fact, read it several times. Monica closed her tablet. "You have plans tonight." Dana's expression did not change. "I often have plans."
"You moved tomorrow's first briefing to eight."
"The intelligence community will survive an additional hour."
"You instructed the residence staff to leave dinner prepared rather than served."
"I would prefer privacy."
"You had fresh sheets delivered."
Dana looked at her sharply. Monica smiled. "That last detail was invented."
"You are insufferable."
"You looked guilty."
"I did not."
"You looked exactly like a woman who has spent the morning imagining something she does not want her chief of staff to mention."
Dana placed the pen on the desk. "My private evening is not part of your responsibilities."
"No. Protecting tomorrow's schedule from tonight's private evening is."
"The schedule is controlled."
"Apparently not the only thing."
Dana stared at her. Monica's smile broadened.
"Leave my office."
"I have one serious question first."
"No."
"You have not heard it."
"I am declining in advance."
Monica's humor faded. "Are you safe?" Dana's irritation softened by a degree. "Yes."
"Are you choosing what happens?"
"Yes."
"Could you stop it without fear of professional consequences?"
The question was more precise than Dana expected.
"Yes."
Monica studied her face. "Then I will mind my own business."
"That would represent significant personal growth."
"I make no promises."
She retrieved her tablet and walked toward the door.
"Monica."
She turned. Dana hesitated. She did not need permission or approval. Monica knew enough about the relationship to understand that Brynn mattered and little enough to preserve the privacy Dana required. Still, the question rose.
"Is it reckless?"
Monica's expression softened. "Having a relationship?"
"With someone who will soon return to my primary detail."
"Yes. It is complicated, professionally dangerous, and probably impossible to explain without causing several lawyers to lose consciousness."
"That is reassuring."
"You asked whether it was reckless, not whether it was easy. Reckless would be pretending the conflict does not exist. You are building rules around it. Whether those rules will hold is something neither of you can know yet."
"That sounds like a warning."
"It is."
"Anything else?"
Monica's mouth curved faintly. "You look happier than you have since before the campaign. That matters too." Then she left.

Brynn's medical review ended shortly after three.
Dana learned this through the official daily personnel summary delivered to the protective command staff, not because she requested information.
The report stated only that Brynn had completed the required physical assessment and remained on track for staged restoration to active duty.
No details. No measurements. No explanation of whether she had experienced pain.
Dana did not contact the medical office.
At four twelve, a private message arrived through the personal device they had agreed to use only outside official conversations.
Cleared for the next stage. Dana read the words beneath the desk while the national security adviser discussed trade sanctions.
She typed: Congratulations. Then, after a moment: How do you feel?
The answer arrived ten minutes later. Tired.
Sore. Relieved. Dana appreciated each honest word.
Are you still able to come tonight? Yes.
At what time? Eight. Dana stared at the screen.
Eat dinner before I arrive. The instruction tightened something low in her stomach.
They had not entered the dynamic. Brynn could not order her.
Dana could refuse. I will. Brynn replied: Good.
Dana locked the screen and returned her attention to sanctions.
The rest of the meeting passed with remarkable efficiency.
* * *
Brynn entered the residence at eight exactly.
Dana waited in the upstairs sitting room.
She had changed twice. The first outfit had been too formal, a dark dress that made her feel as though she were hosting a diplomatic dinner.
The second had been too deliberate, a silk robe chosen less for comfort than for the effect it might have when Brynn removed it.
Dana had finally selected black trousers and a soft ivory blouse.
Nothing ceremonial. Nothing that asked to be admired before she was ready to ask for admiration directly.
The presidential pin remained attached to the blouse. Brynn entered after a quiet knock.
She wore dark trousers and a fitted charcoal sweater beneath her coat. Her hair was loose around her shoulders. The absence of professional clothing made the evening feel private before either woman spoke. Dana noticed the way Brynn moved. "Your side is hurting." Brynn removed her coat. "Three."
"That is higher than yesterday."
"The medical assessment was extensive."
"We can postpone."
"No."
Dana studied her. Brynn held her gaze. "I am sore. I am not impaired. I have taken no medication beyond an anti-inflammatory. I am capable of making decisions." Dana nodded slowly. "What would make you stop?"
"An increase in pain, fatigue that affects my judgment, or any uncertainty about your consent."
The final answer steadied Dana.
"And if I become concerned about your injury?"
"You ask. You do not take control of the evening unless I agree that we should stop."
Dana accepted the boundary.
"Have you eaten?" Brynn asked.
"Yes. Soup, half the entree, and vegetables. Two glasses of water. Six hours of sleep."
Brynn's gaze moved across her face. "Honest?"
"Yes."
"Good."
The word entered Dana like the first touch of a hand. Brynn placed her coat over the back of a chair. They remained several feet apart. The distance was intentional.
"What do you want tonight?" Brynn asked.
Dana had rehearsed an answer. The prepared language disappeared.
"I want you."
Brynn's expression changed, but she did not move closer. "That is not specific enough." Dana's face warmed. "I want to kneel while you undress me. I want you to decide how I am touched."
"Within what limits?"
Dana forced herself to remain present.
"No humiliation. Nothing involving breath restriction. Nothing that leaves marks where they could be seen during official events."
Brynn nodded. "Pain?"
"Some. Enough to feel controlled. Not enough that pain becomes the purpose."
"Restraints?"
Dana's pulse quickened. "Yes."
"What kind?"
"Hands. Not my throat."
"Blindfold?"
"Yes."
"Penetration?"
Dana swallowed. "Yes."
"With my hand?"
"Yes."
"Oral?"
The directness sent heat through her. "Yes."
"Toys?"
"Not tonight."
"Would you like me to touch your breasts and nipples?"
Dana almost laughed at the absurdity of blushing after everything else she had answered. "Yes."
"Would pain there be acceptable?"
Her breathing changed. "Some." Brynn stepped closer by one measured pace.
"What would yellow mean tonight?"
"Slow down, change position, or reduce the intensity."
"Red?"
"Stop."
"Enough?"
"Everything ends immediately."
"Can you say any of those words while aroused?"
"Yes."
"While embarrassed?"
Dana hesitated. Brynn noticed.
"I believe so."
"That is not certainty."
"No."
Brynn remained still. Dana understood what was being asked. "I can say them even if I think using them will disappoint you."
"You cannot disappoint me by protecting yourself."
"I know."
"Say it."
"I cannot disappoint you by protecting myself."
Brynn nodded.
"What do you need afterward?"
Dana looked toward the bedroom. "I want you to wash me, hold me, and stay until morning. I may need food."
"I have already arranged it."
The preparation sent a warm ache through Dana's chest.
"Anything else?" Brynn asked.
