CHAPTER TEN #4

"Not necessarily submission. It might mean allowing you to wash my hair again.

Telling you when I am in pain before you notice.

Letting you hold me without pretending I am doing it for your benefit.

It may eventually mean allowing you more control sexually, but not within the dynamic we have established. "

"Why not?"

"Because I am your dominant. That does not mean I can never receive pleasure or follow a request. It means we need clarity about who holds authority during a scene."

"What if I want one night without the hierarchy?"

"Then we end the dynamic and make love as equals."

Dana's chest warmed at the phrase. Make love. Not perform. Not negotiate. Not provide a service.

"What do you want?"

Brynn's eyes held hers. "Both. Not tonight." Dana exhaled.

"You take great pleasure in adding that sentence."

"Your disappointment is expressive."

"I am usually admired for an unreadable face."

"By people who do not know where to look."

Dana touched the presidential pin. "Are we going to enter the dynamic tonight?" Brynn studied her. "What do you need?"

"Not sex. I want to kneel."

"Why?"

"Because the day was difficult, but I am not trying to escape it. I made decisions, spoke with the families, and am still carrying the unresolved parts. I want the quiet, your hand in my hair, and to know surrender does not always need to lead to discipline or sex."

Approval softened Brynn's face. "Anything else?"

"I want you to hold me afterward."

"Yes."

Dana unfastened the presidential pin and placed it on the table.

"The office is outside."

Brynn's posture changed. "Stand." Dana rose.

"Remove the blouse."

She obeyed. Brynn watched as Dana opened each button and slid the fabric from her shoulders.

"Fold it."

Dana placed it neatly over the chair. She wore a camisole beneath it. Brynn looked toward the floor. "Take the cushion from my bag." Dana opened the bag. A dark padded kneeling cushion rested inside beside sleep clothes and a small toiletry case. She lifted it out.

"Place it in front of me."

Dana set it on the carpet.

"Kneel."

She lowered herself onto the cushion. The support immediately reduced the pressure against her sore knees. Brynn sat on the sofa. "Come closer." Dana shifted forward until she knelt between Brynn's knees.

"Hands on your thighs."

She obeyed. Brynn placed one hand in her hair. The familiar relief descended. Dana closed her eyes.

"Open. You remain here."

Dana looked up. "Yes."

"What happened today?"

Dana described the detained journalists, the opposing demands from their families, the sanctions under consideration, and the uncertainty surrounding the foreign government's intentions.

Brynn listened. She did not advise or attempt to make the decisions simpler.

When Dana finished, Brynn stroked her hair.

"What are you carrying that does not belong to tonight?"

"The belief that I can guarantee both journalists return safely."

"Can you?"

"No."

"What belongs to you?"

"The decisions concerning diplomatic pressure and potential consequences."

"What belongs to the government holding them?"

"The detention."

"What belongs to the intelligence community?"

"Assessing the risks."

Brynn's fingers moved through her hair. "What belongs to tomorrow?"

"The next response."

Dana's shoulders lowered.

"What belongs to tonight?"

"Rest."

"Yes."

Dana leaned forward and placed her forehead against Brynn's thigh.

Brynn allowed it. No arousal demanded attention.

No consequence waited. There was only the position, the hand in her hair, and the relief of boundaries drawn around responsibility.

After several minutes, Brynn touched her cheek. "Look at me. What do you need now?"

"Hold me."

Brynn guided her onto the sofa. Dana curled against her carefully, mindful of the healing side.

Brynn wrapped one arm around her shoulders and drew the blanket across them.

They remained that way in the dim room. The president's blouse and pin waited across the room.

The woman beneath the office rested with her head against Brynn's chest. Neither identity canceled the other.

"I understand something now," Dana said.

"What?"

"The first night was not the beginning of intimacy. The hospital was. When you told me to sit. When you noticed I had not eaten. I thought intimacy required touching."

"What do you think now?"

"That being seen accurately is more intimate than being undressed."

Brynn pressed a kiss to her temple.

"That does not mean I regret being undressed," Dana added.

"I had not assumed you did."

"I wanted the record clear."

Brynn laughed quietly. Dana smiled against her chest. After a while, Brynn asked, "Color?"

"Green."

"Still?"

"Very."

Brynn tightened the blanket around her. Dana closed her eyes.

Tomorrow, the office would return. Soon, Brynn would return to the primary detail.

They would stand near each other in public with no visible acknowledgment of what existed behind closed doors.

The secrecy would demand discipline from both of them.

Tonight, secrecy did not make the relationship unreal.

It made this room precious. Dana listened to Brynn's heartbeat and allowed herself to be held without earning it.

For the first time, that felt entirely natural.
