REHEARSED SMILES AND FLASHBULBS #3
Elara clung to Julian’s side, completely insulated from the screaming paparazzi by the sheer, immovable force of his body. He opened the SUV door, practically lifting her inside, and climbed in after her, slamming the heavy door shut and severing the chaos.
"Go, Leo," Julian ordered.
The car tore away from the curb.
The silence in the back of the SUV was different this time. It wasn't tense or defensive. It was heavy. It was the suffocating, atmospheric pressure of a storm about to break.
They had crossed a line tonight. The rehearsed smiles had faded, replaced by genuine, terrifying connection.
"Where to, Mr. Thorne?" Leo asked from the front seat.
"The house," Julian answered, his voice tight.
Elara’s breath caught. They had agreed to use Julian's house in the Hollywood Hills for the "cohabitation" optics. But the reality of going to his private, secluded home, far away from the cameras and the PR teams, suddenly felt incredibly dangerous.
The drive took thirty minutes, winding up the steep, twisting roads of the hills, leaving the glittering lights of the city far below.
Finally, the SUV pulled up to a massive set of wrought-iron security gates.
They swung open silently, revealing a sprawling, ultra-modern glass and concrete compound perched on the edge of a cliff.
It was a fortress.
The SUV pulled into the subterranean garage. The engine cut off.
"I’ll see you tomorrow, Leo," Julian said, stepping out of the car.
Elara followed, her combat boots echoing loudly on the polished concrete floor. Julian didn't wait. He led her to a private elevator, scanning his fingerprint on the glowing pad. The doors slid open, and they stepped inside.
The confined space of the elevator was agonizing. Julian stood directly beside her, radiating heat. He ran a hand through his dark hair, looking exhausted but fiercely alert.
"You can take the guest suite on the second floor," Julian said, staring at the changing numbers above the door. "It has its own bathroom. The locks work. You’ll be safe."
Elara looked up at him, studying the sharp, bruised lines of his profile. He was giving her an out. He was offering her a locked door and a safe distance. It was exactly what the contract mandated.
But as the elevator doors chimed and slid open, revealing a breathtaking, moonlit living room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the entire Los Angeles basin, Elara didn't want to run.
She stepped out into the living room, dropping her bag onto a massive leather sofa. She turned to face him.
Julian was standing by the kitchen island, shrugging off his charcoal blazer. He tossed it over a stool and began slowly unbuttoning the cuffs of his black shirt. He moved with that heavy, predatory grace, completely at home in the massive, echoing space.
"Julian," Elara said softly, her husky voice breaking the silence.
He stopped, his hands resting on his cuffs. He looked across the room at her.
"Thank you," she said, wrapping her arms around herself. "For tonight. For playing the part perfectly. And... for listening to me."
Julian stared at her for a long, heavy moment. The stormy gray of his eyes darkened, the restraint he had been carefully maintaining all night finally beginning to fracture.
He walked slowly across the living room, closing the distance between them until he was standing just a foot away. The ambient moonlight casting long shadows across his face made him look dangerous, feral, and utterly beautiful.
"I wasn't playing a part, Elara," Julian said, his voice dropping into a ragged, desperate whisper.
He reached out, his massive hands gently framing her face. His thumbs brushed over her cheekbones, tilting her head up until she was forced to look directly into the absolute, terrifying truth burning in his eyes.
"I told you," he breathed, his face inches from hers. "I am not acting. Every time I touch you, every time I look at you, it’s real. I know the contract says we wait six months. I know you need time. But do not ask me to lie to you behind closed doors."
Elara’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. The heat of his hands on her skin was intoxicating. She was staring down the barrel of something completely consuming, something that could either save her or destroy her completely.
"We can't do this, Julian," she whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek, betraying her terror. "If this ends badly... if I lose my music because of another scandal..."
Julian’s thumbs gently wiped the tear away, his touch reverent.
"I would burn this city to the ground before I let anyone take your music away from you," Julian swore, his voice fierce and absolute. He leaned his forehead against hers, closing his eyes. "You're safe here, Elara. I swear to God, you're safe."
He didn't break the rules. He didn't kiss her. But as he held her there in the moonlit silence of his home, Elara realized that the contract was completely irrelevant.
Julian Thorne hadn't just faked a relationship for the cameras. He had systematically laid siege to her heart, and heaven help her, she was ready to surrender the gates.
