Epilogue
Gunnar held out the box of chocolates to Mattie, who was curled up next to him. His arm was around her. Blueberry had fallen asleep on Gunnar’s other shoulder. No surprise there. The imp had eaten more than his fair share of the ice cream Gunnar had brought over.
She picked out a truffle. “Do I hear snoring?”
“Yeah, he passed out on my shoulder.”
“Do you want me to move him?”
Gunnar lifted his brows. “And risk a cranky imp ruining the season finale of Time Traveling Accountant? No, thank you.”
She chuckled as she took a bite of the truffle. “These are so good.”
“This is so good.”
She looked up at him, and he planted a kiss on her, the taste of chocolate still on her lips.
When they broke apart, she nodded, her eyes shining. “This is really good. And you know what I realized the other day?”
“What’s that?”
“You used your last wish to get those maple trees for me.”
He tipped his head. “Not exactly. I did use a wish for those, but it wasn’t my last one.”
She sat up, twisting so she could see him better. “What did you use your last wish on then?”
“I had two after the trees. I wished for Delaney’s never to go out of business and for Time Traveling Accountant to have at least ten more seasons.”
She grinned. “Good choices. But you could have used one of your last wishes to make me like you. Or make me remember. Why didn’t you?”
He shrugged the shoulder that was imp-free and told her the truth. “I wanted you to like me because that was how you really felt. Not because magic made you feel that way. That wouldn’t have felt right to me.”
“What if I hadn’t remembered? What if that stupid text was really the end of us?”
He smiled. “You think I’d have given up that easily?”
She laughed and leaned into him again. “How many times would you have asked me out again?”
“As many as it took.” He kissed the top of her head. “The numbers never lie.”
