Chapter 27 Beta's Fate

Liam's POV

The morning sun filtered gently through my bedroom window, casting a warm glow across the room.

I stirred awake, my eyes immediately drawn to the peaceful figure beside me.

Jess, my beautiful mate, was still sleeping, her hair splayed like a halo against the pillow.

A sense of gratitude washed over me; meeting her had been the best twist of fate in my life.

She had transformed me in ways I never believed possible, steering me toward a more responsible and loving person.

I leaned down and placed a soft kiss on her forehead, savouring the moment while allowing her to bask in her dreams a little longer.

Today loomed ahead of me, heavy with sorrow.

I anxiously thought about my best friend, Lucas.

He once stood tall as a respected Beta, but since he mated with Ashley, he had spiralled into a downfall.

Watching him fade away from the vibrant, confident man I once knew felt like watching a star go dim.

I longed for him to reclaim the life he had lost, but I feared the day we faced him would bring more heartache.

Once I was ready, I slipped out of the closet and found my way to the bedroom.

As I emerged, Jess, fresh from a shower, wrapped in a fluffy towel, caught my eye.

Time seemed to freeze for a moment; she was like a bright sunrise, illuminating the shadows of the day ahead.

I pulled her into an embrace, inhaling her sweet scent before planting a gentle kiss on her lips.

A smile spread across her face, and I felt a warmth that gave me courage for what lay ahead.

We made our way downstairs together, where the aroma of breakfast welcomed us.

Emily and Noah were already seated at the table, radiating a sense of warmth and familiarity.

"Good morning, guys!" I greeted, trying to maintain a cheerful tone despite the heaviness in my heart.

We took our seats, and the table was filled with plates piled high with eggs, crispy bacon, and sausages comfort food for a difficult day.

Yet, beneath the laughter and banter that surrounded the breakfast table, I felt an undercurrent of dread. Once the plates were cleared, it was time to face the conversation that hung over us like a thick fog. "So, regarding Lucas..." I began, and I immediately felt the weight of the room shift.

Lucas's POV

Here I stood, heart pounding, in front of my pack the very people who once looked up to me, who had respected me.

Now, their gazes were heavy with pity, anger, and even a hint of mockery.

I felt small, like a ghost chained to a past life that I had ruined.

How had I become this version of myself?

I thought about all the times I had laughed alongside Liam, about the dreams we had once shared.

I felt as though I had transformed into a lonely spirit , removed from everything that had once brought me joy.

My eyes flickered to Ashley, standing beside me. I could feel the weight of her presence. She was my downfall, but it hurt to think about it. I had let my feelings for her eclipse logic, resulting in decisions that had led me to stand in this very spot, facing potential banishment.

In moments like these, I wished so desperately that I could rewrite my story.

I had been a proud Beta, filled with ambition and strength, and yet I was reduced to this pitiful state.

The pain of my shattered dreams was almost unbearable as I struggled to meet Emily's gaze, casting a wave of guilt.

How could I look into her eyes when I knew I had caused her immense pain, when I knew that I had failed her?

Liam's voice seemed to resonate far away, as if I were underwater, the sounds muffled and distant. Yet voices around me whispered words I had long dreaded.

"Lucas, your fate shall be..."

The moment I had been fearing had finally arrived. The authority in Liam's voice was a stark reminder of the brother he once was and the brother I had failed him as.

"I Alpha Liam Ezra Mickelson of the Silver Moon, strip you of your position as Beta."

The words hit me like a punch to the gut. I felt the power drain away from me like sand slipping through my fingers. I was nothing now.

"You both will live in the furthest house from the pack lands. Medical treatment for Ashley will continue only until the pup is born, and then..."

A surge of cold washed over me at the thought of losing both Ashley and our pup, they were all I had now.

"...you will be banished. You'll have a choice: you can take your pup into the unknown lands of rogues and raise them as a rogue, or you can leave your pup with us, allowing them a chance of a better life."

Time stood still. I barely registered Liam's offer, struggling to process the gravity of my situation. My heart fluttered with unbidden emotions as I took in his words. Was he really willing to offer my pup a life outside of the havoc I had created?

"Liam," I breathed, my voice barely above a whisper. My throat tightened with a mix of shame and gratitude. "Thank you."

His eyes met mine not with disdain, but with understanding. "You still mean more to me than any role, Lucas. I'll do what I can to make sure your pup has a future."

In that moment, even amidst turmoil, I felt a tiny flicker of hope. It was a slim chance for redemption, a chance to do something right for someone I loved. I had lost my way, but there was a glimmer of a new path ahead for my pup one that would hopefully allow them to escape my mistakes.

Emily's POV

I stood tall, shoulders squared and head held high, trying to exude a confidence I didn't quite feel.

Ashley stood beside Lucas, a mix of dread and shame shadowing her features.

I could sense the weight of her guilt hanging in the air like a dense fog, but I refused to engage with her.

She didn't deserve my attention, not after the turmoil she had caused.

Instead, my focus shifted to Lucas. The familiar determination that once defined him was nowhere to be found.

As he stood there, his gaze cast downward, I could see the regret etched deep in his eyes.

It was as if he were a lost soul shackled to his mistakes, quietly absorbing every damning word Liam spoke.

The man I had known strong, ambitious, and destined for greatness had become a shell of his former self.

How could he let Ashley drag him down this path?

He had always been intelligent, capable, and a natural leader.

Watching him surrender to this fate was heart-wrenching and left me more confused than angry.

In just two days, we would leave for the castle, and I was filled with a sense of foreboding about the long journey ahead.

While the castle was our home, it was now laced with the weight of our responsibilities.

I dreaded the impending return to the pressures and expectations that came with our roles as leaders in the werewolf community.

But before the sharp reality set in, I had one day left—one precious day to savour the small joys with my family.

Tomorrow, I would immerse myself in every laugh and every shared memory, determined to cherish the moments that made us who we are.

Noah and I needed this, to reconnect before diving headfirst into the roles that awaited us.

I resolved to make it a day filled with light and love.

After all, amidst all the chaos around us, it was those moments that would provide strength when the weight of the world felt unbearable.

I wouldn't let Lucas or Ashley's mistakes taint the time I had with those I loved most. I would celebrate the bond we shared, even as the storm brewed just beyond our horizon.
