Chapter 9 The Chain Comes Off

I woke the next morning to an empty bed.

At noon the doctor changed my bandage for the last time. The auntie brought lunch like always.

Everything felt normal.

Until I shifted and realized how light my leg felt.

I looked down.

The chain was gone.

Everything changed after that.

That evening, A Qian showed up—first time in weeks.

He hauled me into a car, drove through checkpoint after checkpoint, and took me to a cargo ship.

I thought he was taking me out to sea to dump the body.

I lunged at him, ready to fight with my bad leg and all.

After taking two hits, A Qian laughed, angry, and pinned me down.

“Zhou Wen, can’t you tell good from bad? The Boss wants you sent back. I’m doing this as a favor—don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”

I froze.
