Chapter 5
Chapter Five
Laura
Cade doesn’t move. The ranch keeps making its ordinary evening sounds around us.
A truck door closes near the barn. Metal rings against metal in the calving shed, followed by a man’s low voice and the restless answer of a cow.
The porch light catches the gray at Cade’s temples while he studies me with the care I gave the forged deed.
“One order,” he says.
“To start.”
“And if you refuse?”
“Nothing changes.”
“Your security, room, truck, legal access, and water position stay exactly the same. If you stop after we begin, they still stay the same. If you never ask again, they stay the same.”
He says it once, without turning my desire into a hearing.
I already have the signed standstill in my lawyer’s file, a hotel room reserved on my own card, both truck keys in my pocket, and the dead bolt behind me.
The facts don’t eliminate the imbalance between us.
They give my answer somewhere solid to stand.
“Red means stop,” I say. “No discussion until I decide whether I want one.”
“Red means I stop touching you and give you space.”
“Yes.”
His gaze drops to my mouth. “Go inside, Benton. Leave the door open for me.”
The order is quiet. My body understands it before the part of me trained to qualify everything can interfere.
I step backward through the exterior door and leave it open. Cade waits until I am inside. He climbs the steps, crosses the threshold, and closes the door without locking it. The porch remains visible through the glass. My phone lies on the table beside my keys and wallet, all of them within reach.
He removes his hat and sets it beside the county plats. Without it, he looks less like the public owner of half my horizon and more dangerous in a private way. His black hair is flattened at the crown, gray bright at his temples. The restraint in his face does nothing to hide what he wants.
“Stand in front of me.”
I take the place he indicates. The distance closes before he speaks again.
“Closer.”
I move until the toes of my boots nearly touch his. He doesn’t reach for me. At this distance I can smell clean sweat, leather, cold wind, and the faint mineral scent of the spring water that dried on his coat.
“Look at me.”
My chin rises. His size presses at every edge of my awareness, but he leaves his hands at his sides.
“Tell me why you’re here.”
“Because I want you to give me an order.”
“You already followed one.”
“Then give me another.”
Something changes in his eyes. Approval, dark and precise.
“Take off the blanket.”
I let it slide from my shoulders onto the chair. Cooler air moves through the knit of my sweater.
“Boots.”
I sit long enough to pull them off and stand again. The rug is soft beneath my socks. Cade’s gaze follows each movement without pretending he isn’t looking.
“Sweater next.”
I catch the hem and lift it over my head. My camisole is thin enough that the cold air tightens my nipples beneath it. His attention settles there, and heat spreads down my chest.
“Hands behind your back.”
I clasp them at my waist. The position opens me without trapping me. One step would break it, and the knowledge makes holding still feel chosen instead of expected.
Cade lifts one hand and brushes a knuckle along the strap of my camisole. The touch is almost nothing. My body responds as if he’s been less patient.
“You like being told where to put them.”
“Apparently.”
“No hiding behind evidence tonight.”
“Evidence is currently very favorable.”
His mouth curves. “Kneel.”
The word travels through me, hot and startling. I lower myself onto the rug. He watches my face rather than my chest while I settle back on my heels.
No one has ever asked this of me. More important, no one has ever made refusal so available and obedience so desirable at the same time.
“Hands on your thighs,” he says.
I place them there. The posture keeps every choice visible.
“Good.”
The praise lands low in my belly. Cade steps closer until his boots frame my knees, but he doesn’t touch me. He makes me look up at him and stay there while want gathers between my legs.
“You asked for command,” he says. “That means you listen. It doesn’t mean you disappear. If something changes, you use the word.”
“I know.”
“Say it without arguing.”
“Yes.”
“Good girl.”
My breath changes. His gaze sharpens at the sound, attentive rather than triumphant.
He bends and cups the back of my neck. His palm is broad and warm, his grip steady enough to hold my attention without forcing my head. He kisses me for the first time while I am kneeling in front of him.
The kiss isn’t cautious. His mouth opens mine, and the scrape of his stubble burns pleasantly across my skin. I taste coffee and the restraint he’s carried since morning. When I lean into him, his fingers tighten once at my nape.
“Keep your hands where I put them.”
I press my palms into my thighs. The order leaves me with nothing to do except receive the next kiss, deeper now, and the slow pass of his thumb below my ear. He knows exactly how much strength he’s using. That knowledge is part of the pressure.
Cade straightens. My mouth follows before I catch myself.
“Stand up.”
I rise. He takes my hand and turns it palm up, looking at the faint red marks my nails left in my skin.
“You can touch when I tell you.”
“That seems inefficient.”
“You’re going to learn that efficiency isn’t the only thing worth measuring.”
Cade brings my hand to the front of his jeans. The thick shape beneath the denim jumps against my palm, and the evidence of what his restraint costs is more intimate than seeing him naked would be. He closes his fingers around my wrist, controlling pressure without moving me for me.
“Touch me,” he says.
I trace him through the fabric, learning his length by feel. His breath deepens, but his gaze stays on my face. When I press harder, his fingers loosen instead of tightening, leaving the choice in my hand.
“You want this,” I say.
“I want everything you’ll choose to give me. Tonight, I want you to understand the difference.”
He lets me stroke him twice more before lifting my hand away. My palm feels empty and overaware. Cade turns it upward and presses his mouth to the center, a rough kiss where my pulse has started to beat.
He slides both camisole straps from my shoulders. The fabric catches above my breasts. He waits, one finger hooked beneath the edge.
“Let it go,” he says.
I lower my arms. The camisole falls to my waist, baring me to him.
His expression makes the room feel smaller. Cade takes one breast in his hand and strokes his thumb over the nipple. Pleasure pulls tight through me. I grip my own thighs to keep from reaching for him.
“Beautiful,” he says. “And still watching me.”
He pinches gently, then harder when I arch toward him. The sharper sensation goes straight between my legs.
“You like that too.”
“Yes.”
“Ask for more.”
“Harder.”
He gives it to me, a controlled pressure that makes my knees soften. His other hand closes around my waist and keeps me upright.
“Pants off.”
I open the button with fingers that aren’t as steady as I want them to be.
He watches me push denim and underwear down together.
The ordinary act becomes exposure under his attention.
When I step free, I am naked except for my socks, which feels ridiculous enough to preserve one useful thread of sanity.
Cade looks down. His jaw hardens, and the hand at my waist tightens.
“Socks too,” he says.
I laugh once and pull them off. “Thank you.”
“I won’t have you thinking about cold feet while I’m touching your pussy.”
The direct word strips away the last polite distance. Heat rushes over my skin.
“Sit on the edge of the chair.”
I obey. The chair is wide, upholstered in dark leather, and positioned where the porch windows turn black with our reflections. Cade kneels in front of me, bringing his face level with the part of me already wet for him.
This position should reduce his power. It doesn’t.
“Open your legs.”
I do. Cool air reaches sensitive skin, followed by his warm hand sliding up my inner thigh. His thumb stops beside my clit without touching it.
“Tell me what you want.”
“Your mouth.”
“Where?”
Embarrassment rises out of old habit. Cade waits, his attention steady and his hand still.
“On my pussy,” I say.
“Good.”
He bends and licks me from the opening to the top, slow enough that I feel every part of it. My hips lift before I can stop them. Cade puts one forearm across my thighs, not pinning me, but giving me pressure to push against.
His mouth returns. He circles my clit with his tongue before sucking with careful force. Pleasure builds too quickly, sharpened by every order that brought me here. I grip the chair instead of his hair because he hasn’t told me I can touch.
The restriction makes every other sensation larger.
Leather creaks beneath me. His stubble grazes the inside of my thigh, a rough counterpoint to the wet stroke of his tongue.
When I try to close my legs around his shoulders, the forearm across them holds steady and gives me exactly the resistance I wanted when I asked for command.
Cade changes rhythm when my hips begin to chase his mouth. He slows until I make a frustrated sound, then gives me one firm pull that sends pleasure through my stomach. There is nothing absent or polite in the way he tastes me. He’s controlled because he chooses control, not because he wants less.
He slides one finger inside me. The stretch is new, intimate, and intense. My body tightens around him as his mouth keeps working. The need to know becomes larger than the pleasure.
“Red.”
Cade stops.
His mouth lifts from me. His finger withdraws slowly. Both hands leave my body. He sits back on his heels and studies my face without asking a question. The room holds the ranch sounds, my rough breathing, and nothing from him that tries to pull me forward.
I count five seconds. Then ten. His hands remain open on his thighs. Desire stays hard in his face, but he doesn’t use it against me.
The relief is so clean it hurts.
I’ve spent years believing the test would change the person taking it.
A kind man would be insulted, a dominant man would push, and a powerful man would remind me how much leaving cost. Cade does none of those things.
He lets the stop belong to me even while his arousal strains the front of his jeans and my body aches for the contact I ended.
“I wanted to know,” I say.
“Now you do.”
“Come back.”
He stays where he is. The refusal to interpret my request for me matters as much as the stop.
I understand. The first yes brought him here. After red, I have to choose the next beginning.
“I want you to touch me again,” I say. “I want your mouth, and I want to finish.”
Cade rises enough to lean over me. “Put your hands in my hair.”
I do, threading my fingers through the short dark strands. He lowers his mouth to me again, and this time I hold on.
He uses his tongue and one thick finger, then adds a second only when my body opens around the first. The fullness makes pleasure spread deeper. I feel him learning the rhythm that pulls my hips toward him, then refusing to let me escape it.
His free hand closes around my hip and angles me toward the pressure. The command is physical now, clear in the grip that keeps me where his mouth can work. I give him my weight and feel the answer in the low sound he makes against me.
“Cade.”
He makes a low sound against me. The vibration breaks whatever control I still have.
I come with my fingers tight in his hair and his name in my mouth. The release runs through me in hard pulses, leaving my legs shaking against his shoulders. Cade stays until the last one fades and presses a kiss to the inside of my thigh.
He stands. The front of his jeans is stretched over an erection he’s made no attempt to hide and no move to use.
“Your turn,” I say.
“Not tonight.”
“That wasn’t part of the plan.”
“The plan was one order you could refuse. You gave me more than one, and you tested what mattered. That’s enough.”
“You are very certain for a man who proposed marriage with a defective contract this morning.”
“I learn quickly when you make the correction expensive.”
He picks up the blanket and wraps it around me. He brings water from the small refrigerator, sets it within reach, and carries my clothes to the chair without trying to dress me.
“Bathroom has clean washcloths,” he says. “Do you want me to stay while you get warm?”
The question concerns aftercare, not permission to continue. I know the difference now.
“No. I want to be alone.”
Want moves across his face, followed by acceptance. He gives me the space I asked for without making me defend it.
“Lock the door after me. Security stays outside the east fence. Call if anything changes.”
He puts on his hat and leaves through the exterior door. I turn the dead bolt, and the same click answers me as it did last night.
After a shower, I sit at the small desk in a robe and open the private notes file on my tablet. I record the facts because language becomes less frightening when I make it exact. I wanted his orders. I chose each action.
I stopped him. He stopped. I chose to resume. Obedience can be a preference. It is not a deed. I save the file in an encrypted folder, put both truck keys on the nightstand, and check the connecting door before I turn out the light.
It locks exactly as it did before I said yes.
