CHAPTER 33
Permission Spoken Aloud
The word permission had never seemed romantic to Daniel.
It belonged to forms and signatures, to workplace policies, to children asking whether they could stay up late.
Yet in the upstairs lounge, with Elise seated by the rain-streaked window and Marcus standing near the door, permission became charged with a heat Daniel could not have explained to anyone who had not stood where he was standing.
Not permission as surrender. Not permission as absence. Permission as presence, as a husband saying, I am here, I know what is happening, and I choose to remain inside the truth.
Elise's hand still rested in Daniel's. Her other hand had left his hair and settled against her own throat as if she were keeping herself steady by touch.
'What do you want, Daniel?' she asked.
He almost laughed because the question was impossible.
He wanted to go home. He wanted to stay.
He wanted to erase Marcus from the building.
He wanted Marcus to cross the room. He wanted his wife only for himself.
He wanted to see what she looked like when she stopped being only for him and somehow became more his because she trusted him with the sight of it.
'I want the next step to be small,' he said.
Marcus gave one approving nod. 'Small is wise.'
Elise opened her eyes. 'What small step?'
Daniel rose from his knee and sat on the edge of the sofa facing her. His heart was beating so hard he could feel it in his hands.
'I want you to stand,' he said. 'I want him to come closer. I want to see if I can watch him compliment you without turning it into a crisis.'
Elise's cheeks flushed. 'That is small?'
'For tonight, yes.'
Marcus's voice stayed calm. 'And where do you want me?'
The question did something to the air. Elise looked down, smiling despite herself. Daniel breathed through the sudden flare of nerves.
'Three steps from her,' he said. 'No touching unless we say so.'
'Understood.'
Elise stood. The burgundy dress fell neatly back into place, but she seemed different now, as if the fabric had become a language the three of them could read. Marcus moved from the door with controlled slowness, stopping exactly where Daniel had asked.
Three steps.
Not far. Not close. Enough distance for restraint to be visible.
'Like this?' Marcus asked.
Daniel's throat tightened. 'Yes.'
Elise looked at her husband, then at Marcus. Her breathing was shallow, but she did not retreat.
'You look beautiful tonight,' Marcus said.
The simplicity of it was devastating. No cleverness. No elaborate seduction. Just the sentence Daniel had both wanted and feared.
Elise's eyes softened. 'Thank you.'
Daniel waited for the old reaction: the clench of humiliation, the defensive anger, the impulse to mock what he secretly wanted. It came in a faint wave, then broke against the fact of Elise looking at him. She was not leaving him behind. She was letting him witness the effect of being desired.
'More specific,' Daniel heard himself say.
Elise's gaze snapped to him. Marcus's brows lifted slightly.
Daniel's face burned. 'If she wants.'
Elise swallowed. 'I want.'
Marcus studied her with a patience that made Daniel's pulse jump.
'The dress is elegant, but that is not what makes it work.
It works because you are wearing it like a decision now.
When you came in, you were waiting to see whether you were allowed to enjoy being noticed. Up here, you already know.'
Elise's lips parted. Her hand drifted to her wedding ring.
Daniel leaned forward, elbows on his knees. He felt stripped down to the nerve. But he did not say stop.
'Do you know why that matters?' Marcus asked her.
'Why?'
'Because a woman who knows she is choosing is harder to flatter and easier to honor.'
The line should have been too much. It was not. It landed cleanly, with no grab in it, no demand. Daniel saw Elise receive it and felt the heat of her response from across the room.
She looked at her husband. 'Are you all right?'
He nodded, though his voice came out rough. 'I am jealous.'
'I know.'
'And I want to keep going.'
Her expression broke open with tenderness.
Marcus did not smile, but Daniel thought he saw respect settle more deeply in the man's face.
'Then the next permission belongs to Elise,' Marcus said.
Elise lifted her chin. The rain behind her shimmered like applause.
'One step closer,' she said.
Daniel's fingers dug into his own knees.
Marcus moved one step. Only one.
It was enough to change everything.
