CHAPTER 36

When Marcus Returns

Marcus returned carrying the storm on his shoulders.

Not literally. His suit was dry, his hair only faintly touched by the damp air from the valet entrance.

But something in him had shifted back into sharper focus, the outside world clinging to him in the set of his jaw and the alertness of his eyes.

He knocked once on the unlatched door and waited until Daniel said come in.

That waiting mattered. Everything mattered now.

He stepped inside and closed the door to the same almost-shut position as before.

'Roads are clearing,' Marcus said. 'Your driver is ten minutes out.'

Ten minutes.

The words should have brought an ending. Instead they made time feel precious.

Elise was still close to Daniel on the sofa. Her lipstick was softer than it had been when Marcus left. Daniel realized Marcus noticed and chose not to look directly at her mouth. The restraint was almost obscene in its politeness.

'Thank you,' Elise said.

Marcus nodded. 'Did you both find your footing?'

Daniel laughed quietly. 'Is that what we are calling it?'

'It is one name.'

Elise stood, and Daniel felt the loss of her warmth immediately. She crossed to the table, lifted a glass of water that had been waiting there, and took a careful sip. Her hand was not entirely steady.

Marcus watched the glass rather than her throat. Daniel saw the choice and understood that decency could be its own kind of heat.

'We kissed,' Elise said.

Daniel looked at her, startled by the plainness.

Marcus's expression did not change, but his attention deepened. 'Good.'

Elise's cheeks colored. 'Good?'

'You came here as husband and wife. It is good that you found each other in the middle of the rest.'

Daniel had not expected that answer. He had expected tension, maybe even disappointment. Instead Marcus sounded like a man who understood that his presence only mattered if it returned them to each other with more honesty than before.

'You make this very difficult to resent,' Daniel said.

A faint smile touched Marcus's mouth. 'That is not always the review I get.'

Elise laughed softly, and the sound loosened the room.

For a moment, they were simply three adults standing in an upstairs lounge after midnight, rain on the windows, the strange grammar of trust still being written between them.

Then Marcus looked at Daniel. 'There is time for one more step if you want one. There is also time to leave clean.'

Daniel heard the honesty in the offer. No pressure. No manipulation. The exit was real. That made the possible step real too.

Elise did not ask what he wanted. She waited. The waiting told him she trusted him to answer not from panic, but from desire.

'One more step,' Daniel said.

Marcus's gaze sharpened. 'Name it.'

Daniel's pulse hammered. He stood beside Elise and took her hand. 'I want to stand with her. I want you to stand in front of us. I want her to hear me say that she is allowed to enjoy being desired, and I want you to hear that she is my wife while I say it.'

Elise's eyes filled instantly.

Marcus's face went still in a way Daniel had not seen before. Not cold. Moved, perhaps, though tightly controlled.

'That is not a small step,' Marcus said.

'I know.'

'Are you doing it for her or against yourself?'

The question hit hard enough to hurt. Daniel looked at Elise. She did not rescue him from answering.

'For us,' he said finally. 'Against the version of me that made silence feel safer than truth.'

Marcus held his gaze, then nodded. 'Then stand together.'

Elise moved into Daniel's side. He placed one arm around her waist, feeling the familiar curve of her through the dress Marcus had admired. Marcus stood in front of them, not close enough to touch, but close enough that the three of them occupied one charged circle of light.

Daniel kissed Elise's temple.

'You are allowed to enjoy this,' he said, voice rough. 'You are allowed to be beautiful in front of someone else. You are allowed to feel wanted and still belong to yourself, and to me, and to what we choose together.'

Elise trembled against him.

Marcus lowered his eyes for one second, not in retreat, but in respect.

Daniel looked at him. 'And you are allowed to want her only inside the rules we give you.'

Marcus met his gaze. 'I understand.'

Elise whispered, 'I understand too.'

The sentence bound the room tighter than any locked door could have.

Outside, headlights swept across the window.

Their ride had arrived.
