CHAPTER 52
Careful Compliments
Careful, Marcus proved, did not mean weak.
He did not shower Elise with pretty words or make a performance of wanting her. He spoke like a man used to measuring distance, like a man who knew the exact weight of stepping too close. Somehow that made every sentence feel heavier.
'At Aster Hall,' he said, 'you were the only person in that room who looked like she was still awake.'
Elise's mouth parted slightly. 'Awake?'
'Everyone else was performing the end of an evening. Smiling, thanking donors, looking toward the exits. You looked like you were listening for something that had not happened yet.'
Daniel felt that one in the center of his chest. He had known Elise was restless. He had told himself it was boredom, marriage, age, a hundred safe explanations that put no responsibility on him. Marcus had seen in one night what Daniel had been living beside for months.
Elise glanced down at her glass. 'Maybe I was.'
'What were you listening for?' Marcus asked.
Daniel stiffened. Marcus immediately looked at him. 'Too much?'
The check-in came before Daniel could even name the reaction. That helped. He breathed once.
'No,' Daniel said. 'It is direct. Not too much.'
Elise turned toward him, gratitude bright in her eyes. 'I was listening for permission to stop being only composed.'
The honesty left the table quiet.
A couple nearby laughed too loudly over cocktails. Ice clinked. Somewhere behind them, a bartender shook a silver tin with brisk professional rhythm. The rooftop continued to be a normal place while Daniel's marriage opened another sealed room.
Marcus leaned back, giving the words space. 'Composure is useful. It can also become a locked door.'
'You would know about doors,' Daniel said before he could stop himself.
Marcus smiled, the expression brief and unexpectedly warm. 'I am usually paid to stand beside them.'
Elise laughed softly. Daniel felt the sound move through him. He liked that Marcus had made her laugh. He hated that he liked it. He liked that he could admit both things and remain seated.
'And what did you notice about Daniel?' Elise asked.
Daniel looked at her. 'You are enjoying this.'
'I am asking an equal-opportunity question.'
Marcus studied him with a calm that made Daniel feel more visible than judged. 'He watches exits before he watches people.'
Daniel's throat tightened.
'At first,' Marcus continued, 'I thought it was control. Then I realized it was care dressed as calculation.'
Elise's hand slid over Daniel's beneath the table.
'That is annoyingly accurate,' Daniel said.
'It can be a strength,' Marcus said. 'Unless every room becomes a threat assessment.'
Daniel gave a short laugh. 'Are you always this relaxing?'
'No. Sometimes I am less charming.'
Elise smiled into her drink. The rooftop air warmed around them, or maybe Daniel did. The conversation was not a seduction in the crude way he had feared. It was worse. It was intimate. It entered by language first, then watched what language did to the body.
Marcus turned to Elise. 'You looked beautiful that night. You look beautiful tonight. But that is the smallest thing about what I noticed.'
Elise became very still.
Daniel's pulse climbed. The compliment included him because Marcus had made it in front of him, slowly, without stealing the room.
'What was the larger thing?' Daniel asked.
Marcus held his gaze as he answered. 'She kept looking back to see whether you were still there.'
Elise's eyes filled. Daniel looked at her, and the truth of it undid him. In every charged moment, every hallway, every breath by the tape line, she had not been leaving him. She had been looking back.
He lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles at the table.
'I was there,' he said.
'I know,' she whispered. 'That is why I could look forward.'
