CHAPTER 59
Her Hand on the Table
Elise's hand lay between them like a promise none of them dared rush.
The private dining room seemed to shrink around that small offering. Daniel could hear the muffled restaurant beyond the frosted glass: silverware, low conversation, a burst of laughter at the bar. Inside the room, everything narrowed to Elise's palm, Daniel's breath, Marcus waiting.
'Ask her,' Daniel said.
Marcus's eyes moved to Elise. 'May I touch your hand?'
Elise swallowed. 'Yes.'
Marcus did not take it immediately. He looked back at Daniel. 'May I touch your wife's hand?'
The phrasing hit exactly where Daniel needed and feared it would. Your wife. Not a woman removed from him. Not a prize across a line. His wife, visible in the sentence.
Daniel nodded. 'Yes.'
Marcus reached across the table.
His fingers closed around Elise's hand with almost formal gentleness. Daniel watched the contact happen in pieces: thumb settling near her knuckle, fingers supporting her palm, Elise's shoulders rising on an inhale she did not release quickly enough. It was only a hand. It was not only anything.
'Breathe,' Daniel said.
Elise laughed softly, embarrassed and grateful. 'I forgot.'
Marcus's thumb moved once across her knuckles. 'How is this?'
She looked at Daniel as she answered. 'Good.'
Daniel felt the word travel through him. It would have been easier if she had said strange or frightening. Good required him to make room for her pleasure without turning it into evidence against himself.
'Daniel?' Marcus asked.
He appreciated the check-in and hated needing it. 'Sharp,' he said. 'But not bad.'
'Do you want me to let go?'
Daniel looked at Elise. She was still watching him, not pleading, not hiding. The old rule would have made her minimize the answer. The new rule kept her honest.
'No,' Daniel said. 'Keep holding it.'
Marcus did.
Dinner arrived around them in courses that became absurdly irrelevant.
Salad. Fish. Something with roasted carrots.
The server came and went, and each time Marcus released Elise before the door opened.
Each time, after privacy returned, he asked again.
Each time, Daniel answered with more steadiness than before.
Yes.
Again.
Carefully.
By the third time, Elise was smiling with an almost stunned tenderness, as if the simple act of being asked had become its own seduction.
'No one has ever made my hand feel scandalous,' she said.
Daniel laughed under his breath. 'I am trying not to be offended.'
She turned toward him, eyes bright. 'You make everything else feel like home. That is different.'
The sentence saved him from a jealousy he had not even known was rising.
Marcus released her and leaned back. 'That is a good distinction.'
'Do you always approve of our marital insights?' Daniel asked.
'Only the useful ones.'
They laughed, and the laughter changed the room. The hand on the table had not broken anything. It had made their rules tangible.
Then Elise, emboldened by the safety of having survived one wanting, placed her hand back on the table without being asked.
Daniel looked at it, then at her.
'What are you asking?' he said.
'For the next possible thing.'
Marcus did not move.
Daniel's heartbeat thickened. 'Which is?'
Elise's voice barely rose above the hum of the restaurant. 'My hair.'
The room went very still.
Marcus looked to Daniel. Elise looked to Daniel. Daniel felt the old fear and the new trust arrive together, both waiting for him to choose honestly.
He reached for Elise first, brushing his own fingers through the hair at her temple.
She leaned into his touch.
Only then did he meet Marcus's eyes.
'Ask her,' Daniel said. 'Then ask me.'
