CHAPTER 64

An Invitation With Edges

They did not answer Marcus for three hours.

Daniel made breakfast badly, burning the first pan of eggs while pretending not to think about the message. Elise rescued the toast. They ate at the kitchen island like people who had not received a sentence capable of rearranging the day.

I will not ask for another evening, but I would accept one.

The restraint was infuriating. It gave Daniel nothing obvious to fight. Marcus had not pressed. He had not flirted with Elise behind Daniel's back. He had not even requested. He had offered the shape of availability and left the decision where it belonged.

By midafternoon, Daniel was pacing the living room.

Elise sat curled in the armchair, watching him over the rim of her mug. 'You are going to wear a path in the floor.'

'It is an older floor. It has experience.'

'Daniel.'

He stopped.

Her voice was not sharp. That was worse. It was loving and exact.

'What are you afraid will happen if we say yes?'

He looked toward the dark television screen, where their reflections waited like witnesses.

'I am afraid the next thing will make the last thing look innocent.'

'It probably will.'

He turned back to her.

Elise did not look ashamed of the answer. She looked careful. 'That does not mean it has to be unsafe.'

'What do you want?'

There it was again, the question he kept asking and fearing. Elise set the mug down.

'I want to see whether last night was the edge of something or the door to something.'

Daniel felt the sentence enter him and sit down.

'And if it is a door?'

'Then I want us to decide whether to open it together.'

He wanted to be angry at how reasonable that sounded. He wanted desire to be crude enough that he could reject it cleanly. Instead it kept arriving in the language of care.

Daniel sat on the couch, elbows on knees. 'I need more rules.'

Elise nodded. 'Then we make them.'

They wrote them in the Notes app because somehow a legal pad seemed too theatrical and memory seemed too risky.

No private texts unless both can see them.

No alcohol as courage.

No touching that is not asked for twice: once of Elise, once of Daniel.

No bedroom at first.

No pretending jealousy is failure.

No continuing past the first real no.

Elise added the last line herself.

Daniel reads his body before trying to impress anyone.

He looked at it for a long time.

'I hate that this is accurate.'

'I love that you are alive enough to need it.'

That sentence nearly ended the conversation in her arms.

Instead Daniel picked up the phone and typed with Elise beside him, both of them reading each word before he sent it.

Thank you for saying it that way. We are considering another evening. It would need to remain structured, slow, and fully transparent. If that still suits you, we can discuss a place.

He stared at the message.

Elise put her hand on his wrist. 'Is that true?'

'Yes.'

'Then send it.'

Daniel pressed the button.

Marcus answered six minutes later.

It suits me. I would prefer somewhere familiar to you both, with clear exits and no expectation attached. You choose.

Daniel read it twice.

Elise's eyes lifted to his. 'Clear exits.'

'He knows me too well for a man who has touched your hair twice.'

'Once and a half.'

'Do not make this worse with arithmetic.'

She laughed, and the laugh released enough pressure for him to breathe.

They chose Friday.

They chose the private event venue where it had begun.

Aster Hall hosted a late charity preview that evening, smaller than the gala, mostly staff and donors touring the restored east wing. Daniel knew the building. Elise knew the building. Marcus had been scheduled there before and confirmed he would be working the perimeter until ten.

It was not a date, Daniel told himself.

It was an evening with edges.

But when Elise later stood in the closet considering dresses, and Daniel saw her fingers pause over the black one from the original night, he understood that edges could cut and guide at the same time.

'Not that one,' he said.

She turned. 'Too much?'

'No.' His voice lowered. 'Too sacred.'

Elise's face softened.

She chose burgundy instead.

Daniel knew immediately he was in trouble.
