CHAPTER 84

Visible Hands

Elise turned in the chair so that Daniel could see everything.

That had been her idea, and the generosity of it struck him harder than any touch.

She did not hide the line of her shoulder.

She did not angle her body toward Marcus in a way that made Daniel chase for a view.

She arranged herself beside her husband with the deliberate care of someone saying, I am here, and you are here with me.

Marcus stopped behind her chair, but not too close. Both of his hands remained visible at his sides.

'May I touch your shoulder again?' he asked.

Elise inhaled. 'Yes.'

Marcus looked to Daniel.

Daniel nodded. 'Yes.'

The hand returned, and this time Daniel noticed details he had missed before. The controlled weight of Marcus's palm. The way Elise's posture softened without collapsing. The careful distance Marcus kept from her neck, from her hair, from every place they had not named.

The restraint was maddening. The restraint was the entire reason Daniel could keep watching.

Elise's eyes stayed open. She looked at Daniel, and the fact that she did not look away made the touch feel more intimate than if she had closed herself inside it.

'Still good?' Daniel asked.

'Yes.'

'Tell me.'

Her lips curved despite the heat in her face. 'It feels different when I keep my eyes on you.'

'How?'

'Like I am not being taken anywhere. Like I am bringing you what it does to me.'

Daniel's fingers tightened around the arm of his chair.

Marcus remained silent, hand still, expression unreadable except for one softened line near his mouth.

Daniel wondered what it felt like for him to be invited into a marriage and also kept at its border.

The thought surprised him. He had spent so much of the night afraid of being studied that he had forgotten Marcus was also submitting to rules.

'Upper back?' Elise whispered.

Daniel's pulse kicked.

Marcus removed his hand immediately and waited.

Elise looked at Daniel with no defense in her face. 'Only if you want to see it.'

The room held its breath with him.

Daniel considered the word want. It had become both weapon and compass. Want did not mean ready. Want did not mean simple. But want, spoken honestly, had brought them this far without destroying anything.

'Ask me what I am afraid of,' he said.

Elise's eyes softened. 'What are you afraid of?'

'That your body will answer him in a language I don't know.'

She did not rush to deny it. That was why he believed her when she finally spoke.

'Then I will translate,' she said.

Daniel closed his eyes for one second. When he opened them, Marcus was still waiting, hands visible, making no claim on the moment.

'Upper back,' Daniel said. 'Over the dress. No pressure that moves her.'

'Understood,' Marcus said.

He asked Elise again. He asked Daniel again. Only after both yeses did his hand settle higher on her back, between shoulder and spine, broad and steady over the charcoal fabric.

Elise's breath caught.

Daniel almost said stop. Not because she looked harmed. Because she looked awakened. Because the language he feared appeared on her face exactly as he had imagined, and yet she translated before he could ask.

'It makes me feel held,' she said, voice trembling. 'But I know he is not holding me. You are.'

Daniel did not understand how a sentence could wound and heal in the same breath.

Marcus's hand lifted away.

Elise turned into Daniel at once, pressing her forehead to his shoulder. He wrapped an arm around her, and the possessive relief that moved through him was not small or civilized. It was primitive, grateful, frightened, alive.

Across from them, Marcus took his seat again.

No one had crossed the line.

The line had simply become visible enough to glow.
