CHAPTER 94

The House Rules

They did not go upstairs immediately. That was another surprise. Daniel had imagined desire as a rush, a door slammed, shoes forgotten, words abandoned. Instead Elise led him to the kitchen, turned on the small lamp above the counter, and filled two glasses of water.

The domesticity should have cooled the night. It did not. It made everything sharper. The same woman who had stood in a private library with another man's hand on her shoulder now stood barefoot in their kitchen, offering Daniel a glass and watching him with a look that belonged only to him.

'Water first,' she said.

'Very seductive.'

'Hydrated marriages last longer.'

He laughed, and the laughter steadied them. They drank without speaking. Then Elise took the legal pad from the drawer where they kept batteries, tape, and the other small objects of responsible adulthood.

'More rules?' Daniel asked.

'House rules.'

The phrase settled over him with unexpected warmth.

They sat at the kitchen table. The same table where they had paid bills, planned holidays, argued about gutters, and once assembled a science project for a nephew at midnight.

Now it became a place to translate a forbidden night into something that could live inside their marriage without burning through the walls.

Elise wrote the first line. Nothing continues if either of us feels alone.

Daniel read it twice. 'Yes.'

He wrote the second. Marcus never decides the next step.

Elise nodded immediately. 'Yes.'

She wrote the third. We do not use jealousy as punishment.

Daniel looked up. That one found him.

'I need that,' she said. 'If we do this, even in tiny ways, I need to know you will not make me pay for liking what we agreed to.'

Shame moved through him, not because she had accused him, but because she had named a danger he could imagine becoming if he were careless.

'Add one for me,' he said.

She handed him the pen.

He wrote slowly. I am allowed to say when it hurts without ending everything.

Elise's face changed. She reached across the table and covered his hand. 'Yes. Absolutely yes.'

The rules grew from there, not many, but enough. No secrets. No late messages without both of them present. No escalation in public. No pretending courage if what they needed was a pause. Aftercare was not optional, Daniel wrote, and Elise underlined it three times.

When they finished, the page looked less like a contract than a map.

Elise leaned back in her chair. 'Does this make us strange?'

Daniel thought about lying. Then he looked at the page. 'Probably.'

She laughed, relieved and a little breathless.

'But not lost,' he added.

Her laughter faded into tenderness. 'No. Not lost.'

He stood and came around the table. She turned in her chair to face him. No Marcus. No lamps. No private club. Just the kitchen light and the rules they had written because desire needed a house if it was going to stay.

Daniel took her face in his hands.

'Mine?' he asked, and the word was not ownership. It was recognition.

Elise's eyes filled. 'Yours. And my own. And here.'

That answer was better than the simpler one.

He kissed her softly, and the night came home.
