CHAPTER 98
The Escort
The hallway had not changed. Dark paneling.
Low lamps. The framed photographs of galas past staring down with polished indifference.
The faint scent of flowers, wax, and expensive cologne.
Daniel had imagined this corridor so many times that walking through it again felt like stepping into a memory before it had finished deciding whether to become a warning or a treasure.
Marcus walked several steps ahead, scanning corners by habit. Elise walked beside Daniel, not behind, not ahead. Her hand remained in his.
No one spoke at first.
The silence was the point.
Daniel let the rhythm of their footsteps teach him what had changed. The first night, every sound had seemed to announce that Elise was drifting toward another man's gravity. Tonight every step reminded him that she was choosing to move with him through a space that had once frightened them both.
At the turn toward the private lobby, Marcus paused and glanced back. 'There is a service group ahead. We can wait here or take the south corridor.'
So ordinary. So controlled. The man was working, and yet the question carried the entire history of their arrangement: wait, or choose another route.
Elise looked at Daniel.
Daniel smiled because he understood the joke the night was making with them. 'South corridor.'
Marcus nodded and led them through a quieter passage lined with tall windows. City lights trembled in the glass. Rain had started again, soft enough to look cinematic, persistent enough to be real.
Halfway down the corridor, Elise stopped.
Daniel stopped with her. Marcus took two more steps, then turned immediately, alert but not alarmed.
'Everything all right?' he asked.
Elise's voice was calm. 'Yes.'
She turned to Daniel. 'I want to ask for something small.'
His body answered before his mind did. Heat, fear, curiosity, all rising in their familiar order. 'Ask.'
'I want you to place my wrap over my shoulders here. With him watching.'
The request was so modest that it should not have felt like a flame. But Daniel understood at once. She was not asking for Marcus's hand. She was asking Daniel to reclaim the echo in the place where echoes were strongest.
Marcus looked away toward the window, giving them privacy inside his presence.
Daniel took the wrap from her arm. His hands were not entirely steady. Elise turned her back to him, not to leave him, but to trust him with the view. The green dress exposed the elegant line of her shoulders. Daniel remembered Marcus's hand there, the private library, the pause.
Then he placed the wrap over her himself.
Elise closed her eyes.
Daniel let his hands rest lightly at her shoulders, over fabric, exactly where the other man's hand had been and exactly where it no longer was.
'Report,' he whispered near her ear.
'Home,' she said.
The word struck him harder than any confession. Home. Not tame. Not ordinary. Not untouched by danger. Home.
He turned her gently back to face him.
Marcus remained at the window, still not watching.
'Mr. Reed,' Daniel said.
Marcus turned.
Daniel kept one hand on Elise's shoulder. 'Thank you for the escort.'
Marcus understood the dismissal and the gratitude beneath it. 'Of course.'
They continued to the lobby without another test.
At the doors, Marcus held them open.
Elise stepped through with Daniel's hand at her back.
The night outside was wet, bright, waiting.
This time Daniel did not feel exposed because Marcus watched them leave.
He felt witnessed.
