Chapter 40🌜 Another Route

William's POV

"It's gonna rain." I tell Zane as the breezy wind blows my hair back. "The way it's thundering, do you really think we should camp tonight?"

A roar of thunder paints the sky gray and it dissolves into the darkness of evening. It's not even 4:30 and it's already looking like it's night. "I think we will be fine. " He persists plodding onward. "It's such nice weather to go out, don't you think?"

"Do you like rain?" He sounds genuinely happy, like these two days since our wedding he was kind of shut off. Not talking much, not even smiling.

He didn't initiate, and I didn't try to make a move either. He will enter the room late and then wake up early. When I would wake up, he wouldn't be there. Almost like he's trying to avoid me for an unknown reason.

Maybe for her.

You know what? Good. Out of sight, out of mind. If he were in the room, he would only irritate me more. It's better if he is with her.

Now this is honestly the first exchange of words happening between us after two days of comfortable silence.

"I do. I don't know if it would be a nice idea to camp, though.

Like I read online that this is the time when it rains the most in Sicily.

And it's literally freaking freezing." I rub my gloved hands together.

"It does, but don't you worry. Our camps are strong and where we are camping—it is mostly covered with trees, plus it's not even gonna rain this hard." He opens the passenger door after unlocking his car.

"Hmm..." I sit inside his SUV. It's warmer inside, the woollen coat I'm wearing right now suddenly feels too heavy.

He sits on the seat beside mine, as the car starts with a subtle vroom. But before we can move forward, there's a tap on the window on his side.

He gives a firm press and the window opens automatically. "Wanna race, Fra? Let's see who reaches first in all of our cars."

"Sure." Zane accepts Enzo's challenge. "But don't be reckless and a sour loser."

"Mhm, don't you worry about it, Zanuccio. Me and my baby will beat y'all's asses, respectfully of course." Enzo looks behind our car just for a second as he blows a kiss. "And the one who will win, will not have to pitch the tents. Which would obviously be yours truly."

"We'll see for that." Zane smirks. "But, seriously, drive safe. It might rain, so be careful."

"I will." He tips his hat like a cowboy—without a hat—as he leaves. Zane waits for him to settle down in his car, before he starts.

"Enzo and you are bonded well." I remark, after ten minutes on the journey. The roads are mostly empty, not even a single car—apart from ours—in sight. There were some around our hotel, but not here.

"We are." Zane stays focused, with his expressions on ease and shoulders relaxed."He's like a son to me, and I think I adopted him the day he wrapped his tiny fingers around mine." He turns his head for a brief pause. "Enzo loosens up a little around me, because he can't around dad."

"And who do you loosen up around?" I ask before thinking and instantly get an urge to slap some sense in me.

"Hey, are you trying to say I'm too upright?" He ponders with a deadpan look on his face.

I stay unfazed. Too unfazed that I start doubting my survival instincts. This man is literally a fucking criminal, I should be more afraid around him. "Kinda."

"Tell me something I don't know, Gattino." He flashes me a smile. "I mean I try to be less on edge, but you see, it can't be part of my resume."

"So it's because of your job?" I mean who would actually take a careless boss seriously?

"Yup. But what about you? You are not running a mafia, then why do you act like you sold your soul to the devil?"

"Maybe I did..." Sold you Romie and here we are now. I tread the rim of the sapphire on my hand. In the dimness, the venom inside it is looking darker than ever.

"Mmm..." He says as a car tries to overtake us. The violent roaring of an engine echoes through the trees passing by as it swallows the wind. Behind all that mist and fog is a pristine, yellow Lamborghini with its headlights on.

"He did not just bring a fucking Lambo to a trek?" I look at him, half-entertained, half-apprehensive.

"He sure did." Zane doesn't seem to like this idea one bit as he glares at his younger brother, who's currently swiping his thumb below his neck and then points it at us like a menace.

Zane lowers his window and motions for him to do the same. "Have you lost your mind, Lorenzo?" His voice goes up an octave as his face turns red. "Who brings a fucking supercar to a fucking rocky mountain trek in freezing rain?"

Enzo doesn't look tiniest bit bothered with his brother's outburst. "Chill bruh, it's not even raining yet.

" He gives his steering wheel a subtle stroke.

"And this is a fucking beast with multiple modes made for occasions just like these.

So take a chill pill, I am using Terra mode!

" He closes the window before he screams, "See you at the finish line, losers.

" And accelerates faster than ever on the empty road.

Here Zane increases his speed too. "Are we actually gonna race him, now?" I ask as a thrill of high speed runs my blood cold.

"Kinda, but it's also to make sure he doesn't get his ass handed."

"Who do you think will win?" We have almost reached the rocky part, and we are almost racing head to head. There Enzo changes gears, here Zane moves faster, leaving all the cars behind. He just passes a smirk as an answer.

It all slows down when the mountains actually start showing why they are mountains. The sudden bumps and skinny driveways that will allow only one car to lead forward give us an upper hand as Zane reaches there first.

"Is there another route?" I ask as I almost jump like popcorn.

"No, it's the only one to reach the top." Everything collides in a flash. A tree slanting right in front of our windshield, making the tires screech as they come to a sudden stop.

A murder of crows barks out caws as they take off with rapid fluttering of their wings. Zane's hand immediately goes for my core as he pushes me back while my eyes close and breathing stops.

I slowly open my eyes as I hear the heaving of breath beside me. "Are you okay?"

I bob my head, "are you okay?" I make a quick scan on him, looking for any injuries. Thankfully, he looks fine.

He nods back. There's a horn behind us and we both look back. Damn...

I almost forgot that there were people behind us. If not from colliding with the tree, we could have died from getting crushed with the cars behind us.

Zane taps on his earpiece—which I didn't even know he was wearing—and says, "There was a tree which fell right in front of us, making our car stop." He goes outside the car to see the situation outside.

He comes back inside the car after drifting it enough for us to drive forward. "We can drive now, and everyone—keep your pace slow and enough distance among cars. Especially you, Enzo."

There's some nagging on the other side but Zane ends it.

??

Setting up our tents was a task. A task I definitely did not participate in, because why the hell should I, hmm?

Also because we won, and it was the prize, right?

Zane on the other hand, didn't get the liberty to sit down. He helped in setting up all the tents with these guys. Effortlessly lifting up and then pitching deep. Almost breaking a sweat in the cold.

Then he helped in setting up the barbecue—in which I reluctantly helped him out a little. I am generous like that.

Plus, after cooking with him, I knew it won't be a biggie.

It wasn't.

We have played four rounds of UNO which Malvolio and Enzo called the dumbest game ever—typical losers.

I won though, so there's that. That plus four in the end was the total game-changer. "Ugh, fuck off this kids game. It's so idiotic." Azmer says as he punches his cards on the table.

Malvolio and Anna invited some of their friends and now this has become more like a party. We all are tipsy to 'I am gonna ugly cry on Eiffel tower' kinda drunk. Even I have gulped down some rum, which I usually avoid.

Rain hasn't made an appearance and the weather is looking cleaner here. Though it's still freezing my balls.

I stand up as I walk towards the bonfire to get some warmth and some needed peace.

But the whole zoo follows me and they all surround the bonfire with their constant bickering on.

"Never have I ever is much better than fucking Truth or Dare, Veronica.

" One of the girls I don't remember the name of, argues.

"No it's not. We are playing TD, final."

"We are not. Boo." Enzo shows her a thumbs down.

"Fuck off, why is he even here?" She rolls her eyes. And then as if she sees Zane, she goes, "it's just, he's such a kid..."

"Or you are just a bitch?" Enzo bites back, making Veronica gasp.

"You asswipe—"

"Okay, stop it both of you." Zane comes forward as he narrows his eyes on them. "We can play both. It's for fun, not for fucking catfight, remember?"

"Never have I ever, first." Enzo crosses his arms.

"Sure." Zane agrees.

"Whatever." The bitch rolls her eyes as she leaves to sit with the other mean girls.

"Okay! So every fugly hoe around, listen carefully.

We are playing never have I ever. So y'all better put your asses here.

" Enzo claps his hands to grab attention.

"Rules are simple, but I would repeat for the uncles here.

There would be a statement given in every round.

If you have done the said thing, take the shot and move on with your boring lives. "

A couple of groans bubble up in the forest. Before Matteo goes, "Alright, who's gonna go first?"

Zack, another frat boy looking guy, says, "Let's do clockwise, starting from me."

No one disagrees so he goes, "Never have I ever fucked or gotten fucked in a bathroom cabinet."

Damn... It seems like modesty is not a concept here. Most of the guys take their shots, even Kazimir who has apparently brought the whole bottle of Vodka in his hand, drinks right from the bottle.

The other jocks including Enzo and Ryan take theirs. While I give a glance to Zane, who in return was looking for me. Both of us haven't taken the shot and my face flushes as I look away.

"Next question! My turn!" Tina says after she's done with her shot. "Never have I ever not put on make up."

"Fuck offffff!" Malvolio slurs. Girls look at all the guys taking their shots—except for me.

Romie has practiced her wingliner skills on me, so it counts I guess. Again Zane looks at me and gives me one of his lopsided smiles.

"Alright. Now it's my turn." The demon himself makes his presence known as Vance's turn arrives. "Hmm... never have I ever kissed a guy."

A/N??
