CHAPTER 8

A KISS IN THE CELLAR

Julian did not rise immediately. That was the first thing Miles noticed. He gave the moment time to become real, which somehow made Miles feel more exposed than if the man had simply crossed the room.

Serena set her glass down carefully. Her hand returned to Miles's for one more squeeze. It was not apology. It was connection. Then she released him.

Julian stood.

The room seemed to narrow around the few steps he took.

Miles saw everything too clearly: the roll of Julian's sleeve, the calm in his hands, Serena lifting her chin because she refused to hide inside the choice.

She remained seated until Julian stopped before her.

Then she stood, and the black dress fell into place around her like a secret deciding to be seen.

'May I touch your face?' Julian asked.

Serena looked at Miles. He nodded, jaw tight, heart louder than reason.

'Yes,' she said.

Julian's hand rose slowly. His fingers rested at Serena's jaw with a gentleness that made Miles's jealousy flare sharper than roughness would have. Serena inhaled. Her eyes stayed open until the last second.

The kiss was not long at first. It was a question pressed to her mouth. Serena answered by stilling completely, then softening. Miles felt the answer in his own body as if the kiss had crossed the room and touched him too.

Julian drew back. Serena's eyes opened. She looked startled, not by him, but by herself.

'Again?' Julian asked.

The boundary had been one kiss. Everyone in the room knew it. Serena turned toward Miles before speaking.

Miles could have ended it there. He could have held the line and still called himself brave. But bravery had changed shape. He was no longer afraid only of going too far. He was afraid of returning too quickly to the smaller version of their lives.

'Do you want again?' he asked her.

Serena's answer came as a whisper. 'Yes.'

Miles nodded once.

The second kiss was not a question. Julian kissed her with the confidence of a man who had been invited and would not insult the invitation by pretending otherwise.

Serena's hand rose to his shoulder. Miles watched it happen: his wife's fingers resting against another man's shirt, her body angling subtly closer, her mouth parting on a breath he knew intimately and had never heard from across a room.

Jealousy opened inside him like a dark flower. So did wonder. So did a heat that frightened him with its honesty.

Serena broke the kiss first. She turned immediately to Miles, as if he were the place she needed to find after stepping into deep water.

'I am here,' he said before she could ask.

Her eyes shone. 'I know.'

Julian stepped back, giving them the distance they had earned. He lifted the decanter and poured the last measure of the late pour into three glasses.

'The final pour,' he said. 'Not because the bottle is empty, but because the evening has reached its first answer.'

Miles almost smiled at that. 'Its first answer?'

'A good wine never tells the whole truth at once.'

Serena returned to Miles's side but did not sit. She stood close enough for her arm to touch his. He could smell the wine on her breath, and beneath it, the faint trace of Julian's cologne. The combination should have repelled him. Instead it made the room feel impossible to leave.

They drank the final pour standing together.

No one spoke for a long moment. The kiss remained in the air, an invisible fourth presence. Miles looked at Serena and saw not betrayal, not damage, but a door left open. She looked back with the same fear and the same invitation.

Julian set down his glass. 'You do not need to decide anything else tonight.'

Serena smiled faintly. 'You sound very sure there will be something else.'

'I am sure only that some bottles cannot be re-corked without changing the wine.'

Miles reached for Serena's hand. She took it.

The late pour had ended. The aftertaste had only begun.
