CHAPTER 15

THE QUESTION GAME

Julian proposed the question game after the second pour, when the room had stopped feeling like a place they were visiting and started feeling like a temporary country with its own laws.

'No dares,' he said. 'No tricks. Only questions answered honestly or not at all.'

Miles eyed him over the rim of his glass. 'You are very good at making dangerous things sound educational.'

'Wine is education.'

'There it is.'

Serena smiled into her napkin, then looked between them with visible pleasure.

Miles saw it and understood that part of the charge came not from Julian alone but from the way the two men occupied the room differently around her.

Husband and stranger. History and possibility.

Safety and risk. She sat between those currents and did not have to deny either one.

'I will start,' Julian said. 'Serena, what did you expect Miles to do when I kissed you?'

Miles went still. So did Serena.

'Sharp edge,' Miles said.

'A clean one.'

Serena folded her hands in her lap. 'I expected him to look away.'

The answer landed hard. Miles felt it under his ribs.

'Why?' Julian asked.

'Because looking would make it real. And because sometimes I think men are more comfortable with fantasies before women participate in them.'

Miles could not argue. He had seen that truth in himself, or at least its shadow.

'Your turn,' Julian said to Miles.

Miles looked at Serena. He wanted to ask something brave and polished. Instead he asked the question that had been crouched in him all week.

'Did you think less of me when I said yes?'

Serena's answer came immediately. 'No.'

He searched her face for mercy and found none. Only certainty.

'I thought more of you,' she said. 'Not because you let me. Because you stayed honest while it hurt.'

Miles looked down, blinking once. The room did not mock him for needing a second.

Julian waited until he looked up. 'That is not weakness.'

Miles almost laughed. 'I did not ask you.'

'No. But you needed to hear it from the man you wanted to resent.'

The accuracy was irritating enough to be useful.

Serena turned to Julian. 'My question.'

'Go on.'

'Do you do this because you enjoy being wanted, or because you enjoy making people want what they already wanted?'

For the first time, Julian looked faintly surprised. Then he smiled, not seductively, but with respect.

'Both,' he said. 'But the second lasts longer.'

'And me?' Serena asked. 'Which is it with me?'

The fire shifted behind glass. Miles heard it pop softly.

Julian answered without looking away from her. 'With you, I enjoy how carefully you try to remain composed while the truth moves through you.'

Serena's fingers tightened on her napkin.

Miles felt jealousy again, bright and immediate. Then he heard his own voice. 'He is not wrong.'

Serena turned to him, stunned by the support inside the admission.

'You do that,' Miles said. 'You hold yourself together even when you want to come apart. I thought it was strength. Maybe it is also habit.'

The words changed her face. She looked both exposed and relieved.

'Ask me another,' she said softly.

Miles knew the question before he decided to ask it. 'What do you want from tonight that scares you to say?'

Serena closed her eyes. When she opened them, she looked first at Miles, then at Julian, then back to Miles.

'I want another kiss,' she said. 'Not because the first one was unfinished. Because I want to know who I am after choosing it twice.'

Miles absorbed the answer. It hurt less than expected and more meaningfully.

'That is allowed by the rules,' he said.

Her breath caught.

Julian did not move. 'Only if the husband wants to watch honestly again.'

Miles looked at him. The provocation was mild. The respect was real. Both worked on him.

'The husband,' Miles said, 'is learning.'

Serena's smile was small, trembling, and beautiful.

The question game ended there, not because they had run out of questions, but because one of them had become an answer.
