CHAPTER 62
DECANTING THE TRUTH
The kitchen held the kind of quiet that arrived after midnight, when appliances seemed louder than people and every ordinary object became a witness.
Miles filled two glasses with water and set one in front of Serena. She smiled at the practicality of it. After all the polished stems and careful pours of the tasting room, water from their own tap felt almost indecently intimate.
'Hydration,' he said.
'How romantic.'
'I am a man of mystery.'
Her smile held for a moment, then softened into something more vulnerable. 'I liked tonight.'
Miles had known it. He had watched her like a man reading a letter in a language he was only beginning to understand. Still, hearing it aloud entered him differently.
'I know,' he said.
'Not just because of him.'
He reached for his water, then stopped. 'Say that again.'
Serena frowned slightly. 'Not just because of Julian.'
'No. The first part.'
She understood. Her cheeks warmed, though there was no wine left to blame. 'I liked tonight.'
There it was. Plain and dangerous. No flirtation to disguise it, no candlelight to make it theatrical. Just his wife, standing in their kitchen, admitting that something forbidden had not felt like a mistake.
Miles took a long drink of water. 'I liked watching you like it.'
The words made the room change.
Serena did not step closer. She knew the courage it had taken him to say it, and she honored it by not grabbing at it greedily.
'Did it hurt?' she asked.
'Yes.'
She looked down.
'But not only hurt,' he added.
Her eyes came back up.
Miles pressed his palms flat to the counter. 'That is the part I do not know what to do with. If it only hurt, I could call it wrong and lock it away. But it did something else too.'
'What?'
'It made me see you.'
The answer undid some careful thing inside her. She turned her face slightly, but he had already seen the shine in her eyes.
'I do not want to become a woman you watch because you cannot reach me,' she said.
'You are not unreachable.'
'Tonight I felt far away.'
'You were.'
She swallowed.
'But you kept looking back,' he said.
That was the truth that mattered most to him.
Not Julian's confidence. Not the brush of hands over a glass.
Not the way Serena's laugh had warmed toward another man's attention.
She had moved toward the edge and turned back again and again, making sure Miles was still there, making sure the bridge had not vanished behind her.
'I did not want to lose you,' she whispered.
'I did not want to stop you just because I was scared.'
The envelope waited between them.
Serena touched the glass of water, leaving a half moon of condensation beneath her fingers. 'What are we allowed to want?'
It was the question the wine had been asking all night in different disguises.
Miles looked at the black seal. 'Maybe allowed is the wrong word.'
'What is the right one?'
'Trusted.'
She closed her eyes for a moment.
He came around the island then. Slowly. No performance, no grand gesture. He put his hands on her waist, and she leaned into him with an exhale that seemed to leave the whole night behind and bring it closer at the same time.
Their kiss was not frantic. It was careful because both of them knew carefulness could be its own kind of heat. He tasted wine in memory only, and beneath it the truth of her - familiar, altered, still his, never simply his.
When they separated, Serena rested her forehead against his chest.
'Do we open it tonight?' she asked.
Miles looked over her shoulder at the envelope.
'No,' he said. 'Tonight we let it breathe.'
She laughed softly against him. 'Like wine?'
'Like us.'
The answer was imperfect, but it was honest. For that hour, honest was enough.
