CHAPTER 74
NOTHING BETWEEN THEM
Julian did not touch Serena at first. Miles had braced for it, had prepared his jealousy like a weapon, but the sommelier only circled half a step to stand beside her, close enough that their reflections joined in the dark window.
Outside, the vineyard rolled under the moon in silver rows.
Inside, Serena lifted the glass as Julian lowered his voice.
'Start with the color,' he said. 'Not the taste.'
Serena angled the bowl toward the lamp. The wine caught fire at the edge, a narrow ring of garnet against the black.
'It looks almost secret,' she said.
'Most honest things do, until light touches them.'
Miles exhaled through his nose. 'Do you practice these lines in a mirror?'
Julian's mouth curved. 'Only the useful ones.'
Serena laughed, and the laugh loosened something in the room. It loosened Miles too. He needed the absurdity, the reminder that even dangerous moments could contain humor, that desire did not have to arrive wearing a mask of doom.
Then Julian lifted one hand toward Serena's wrist and stopped before contact.
'May I?'
The question was quiet. Miles heard everything inside it. Not just permission from Serena, but an acknowledgment that Miles was present and that the marriage had not vanished because another man stood near her.
Serena looked to her husband.
Miles's throat tightened. He wanted to be noble. He wanted to be honest. Those were not always the same thing.
'Yes,' he said, and was startled by how steady it sounded.
Serena answered Julian with a nod.
Julian's fingers touched the outside of her wrist lightly, guiding the tilt of the glass.
It was the smallest contact imaginable, almost instructional enough to be innocent.
Almost. Miles watched the place where the sommelier's hand met his wife's skin and felt the strange, split sensation again: anger, heat, fear, and a terrible pride that Serena could make a man's restraint look difficult.
'Less force,' Julian said. 'Let the wine show itself.'
'You say that like you're talking about more than wine.'
'I am trying not to.'
Serena's breath changed.
Miles gripped the arms of the chair. Not to rise. To stay.
Julian released her wrist. The absence of his hand seemed louder than the contact had been. Serena took a sip, then held the wine on her tongue before swallowing. Her eyes closed.
Miles knew that expression. Not from tasting rooms. From mornings when she stood barefoot in sunlight. From the first bite of something sweet. From the rare evenings when she forgot to manage herself and simply received pleasure without apology.
She opened her eyes and found him watching.
'Still here?' she asked.
He nodded. 'Very.'
'Too much?'
Miles considered lying. The old reflex was there, eager and polished. No, I'm fine. Whatever you want. I'm cool. He had hidden behind generosity before. He would not hide there now.
'A lot,' he said. 'Not too much.'
Serena's shoulders eased.
Julian stepped back, giving Miles a clearer view. The gesture was not accidental. It told him that watching was not being stolen from him; it was being given back.
'Now describe the finish,' Julian said.
Serena looked into the glass. 'It stays longer than I expected.'
'Some things do.'
Miles laughed once, helplessly. 'There it is again.'
This time Julian laughed too, a low sound that made the room feel briefly less ceremonial. Serena looked between them, and something mischievous sparked in her face.
'Maybe both of you are impossible,' she said.
'Only tonight?' Miles asked.
'Tonight you're both worse.'
The shared laughter faded into a quieter warmth. Then Serena moved, not toward Julian exactly, but into the space where the lesson had left her. She held the glass out to Miles.
'Taste it from here,' she said.
He stood before he knew he had decided to. The room tightened, then opened around the three of them.
Miles crossed the few steps to her. Serena lifted the glass to his mouth. Her fingers brushed his jaw, familiar and grounding. He drank where she had drunk. The wine tasted different from her hand.
When she lowered the glass, Julian was watching them both.
For once, Miles did not feel reduced by it. He felt witnessed.
Serena whispered, 'Oak that holds it together.'
Miles touched her waist. 'I'm trying.'
'I know.'
Julian's voice came softly from beside them. 'That may be enough for the next minute.'
Miles looked at him over Serena's shoulder.
One minute. Then another. Not forever. Not a cliff. A series of chosen steps.
Serena turned back toward Julian, still within the circle of her husband's hand.
There was still nothing between them but air, but now Miles understood that air could be a boundary too, if everyone agreed to honor it.
