CHAPTER 96

THE HUSBAND WHO SAW

After the kiss, the room did not collapse.

Miles had expected consequence to arrive like shattered glass. Instead, there was only the sound of Serena breathing against his chest and the low hush of wind in the vineyard. The world, offensively, continued. The lamps burned. The bottle waited. His wife remained in his arms.

He held her tighter than he meant to.

'Too tight,' she murmured, not frightened, simply honest.

He loosened his grip at once. 'Sorry.'

'Don't be sorry. Just hear me.'

That, he thought, might be marriage in its most concentrated form. Do not vanish into guilt. Adjust. Stay.

Serena drew back enough to look at him. Her mouth was still her mouth. That realization nearly made him laugh. Julian had kissed her, and she had not become less familiar. If anything, the sight of her returning made every known detail more precious.

'What did you see?' she asked.

Miles knew she was not asking whether he had watched the kiss. She was asking whether he had witnessed the truth she had promised.

'I saw you choose it,' he said. 'And I saw you choose me after.'

Her expression broke open, tender and relieved.

Julian spoke from the window. 'That is the difference.'

Miles looked at him. 'Between what?'

'Between being used to escape and being trusted to reveal.'

The sentence should have sounded rehearsed. It did not. There was too much ache in Julian's voice for performance.

Serena turned slightly in Miles's arms. 'Is that what you were doing? Revealing?'

Julian looked through the glass at the vines before answering. 'Partly. Partly I was being selfish and trying very hard to remain worthy of the trust you placed in my selfishness.'

Miles gave a short laugh. 'That's the first thing you've said all night that made you sound fully human.'

Julian smiled without looking away from the window. 'I have many flaws. I simply don't pour them unless asked.'

Serena laughed then, unexpectedly, and the sound broke the spell in the kindest way.

The kiss became not less important, but more possible to carry.

Miles felt his body come back from the edge of myth into the room where three adults stood with wine cooling in their glasses and morning somewhere on the far side of night.

He released Serena enough to take her hand.

'My turn for a lesson,' Miles said.

Both of them looked at him.

He reached for his glass and lifted it. 'I want to learn how not to disappear while wanting something difficult.'

Serena's fingers tightened around his. 'Then start by not letting go.'

He did not.

Julian returned from the window, but stopped several feet away, waiting again for direction.

Miles raised the glass toward him. 'You may come back to the table.'

The formality made Serena smile. It made Julian bow his head in acceptance.

When they drank again, it was not to continue the kiss. It was to honor that they had survived telling the truth about it.
