CHAPTER 99

NO PRETENDING IN THE MORNING

Morning arrived without mercy.

Sunlight did not care that the night before had felt carved from velvet and candlelight.

It came through the bedroom curtains in pale strips, touched the laundry chair, the water glass on Miles's nightstand, the familiar landscape of a shared room.

The world had not become grander because they had told the truth. It had become more specific.

Serena was awake before him.

She lay on her side, watching him with a softness that made him remember the drive home, the quiet entry into the house, the bottle placed on the kitchen counter as if it were too charged to bring upstairs.

They had not tried to solve everything in the dark.

They had undressed carefully, held each other, and slept with the kind of exhaustion that comes after honesty instead of after argument.

'No pretending,' she said before good morning.

Miles rubbed a hand over his face and laughed despite himself. 'You don't ease into anything, do you?'

'Not today.'

He turned onto his side. 'No pretending.'

The promise settled between them, less dramatic now but more demanding. It was easier to confess under candlelight with another man in the room than it was to speak plainly beside a laundry basket and morning breath.

Serena reached for his hand beneath the sheet. 'I kissed him.'

The words hurt. Less than he feared. More than he wanted.

'Yes,' Miles said.

'I wanted to.'

'I know.'

'I loved coming back to you.'

That one changed the air. Miles closed his eyes and let it enter him without suspicion.

'I loved that you came back,' he said.

She moved closer, forehead nearly touching his. 'Did it make me smaller to you?'

'No.' The answer surprised him with its speed. 'It made the space around you bigger.'

Her eyes searched his face.

He tried again. 'I don't mean easier. I mean... I saw more. I saw what I have been asking you to hide so I wouldn't have to be brave.'

Serena's mouth trembled. 'I don't want to spend our marriage hiding the parts that still want to be seen.'

'Then we don't.'

'And I don't want you pretending jealousy is a joke.'

He nodded. 'Then I won't.'

They lay quietly with the new rules forming not as commands, but as permissions. Tell the truth before it hardens. Name the weather early. Do not use another person as punishment. Do not call courage consent unless both of them can still breathe inside it.

Later, they went downstairs in robes and found the bottle where they had left it. In the clean morning light, the black sleeve looked less mysterious and more real, a thing brought home from a place they could not unvisit.

Serena made coffee. Miles took down two mugs.

'What do we do with it?' she asked.

He looked at the bottle. The late pour had not ended because they had refused it. It had changed locations.

'We wait,' he said.

'For what?'

Miles handed her a mug and kissed her forehead. 'For us to know what we're asking.'

Serena smiled into the steam. 'That sounds annoyingly mature.'

'I hated it as soon as I said it.'

She laughed, and the sound made the kitchen feel like theirs again. Not unchanged. Theirs.
