CHAPTER 13 MISSION TARGET
The tension in the room finally crested, shifting from the sharp edge of an institutional breakdown into the familiar, rhythmic territory of their reconciliation.
Alex broke the heavy silence with a sharp transition into the cadence of a command briefing, his voice regaining that clinical, military snap that served as his primary defense mechanism against the chaos of his own heart.
"Mr. McClellan," Alex said, his gaze fixing on Patrick’s eyes with a mock-seriousness that barely masked the heat beneath it.
"Status of the unit? Is the hull integrity restored, or do we have further internal discrepancies to resolve before we can finalize the transition to the next block?"
Patrick felt the weight of Alex’s fingers against his neck and let out a huff of a laugh, the sound vibrating against Alex’s collarbone. He recognized the pattern immediately; it was Alex’s way of resetting, a ritual of order that always seemed to follow their most explosive drifts.
"Status is nominal, Ko," Patrick mumbled, his voice dropping into that low, resonant register that ignored the forty-inch interval of the Yard.
"But you’re doing it again. Falling back into SOP because you don't know how to just be the guy who’s sorry."
Alex grimaced, a small, honest expression of defeat.
"I am sorry… I’m sorry I didn’t think about my actions and how it made you feel. It was not intentional, and I should have known better."
He pulled Patrick down onto the bed, seeking the crushing reality of his weight.
"So… Is this the part where I get to fuck you?" he joked, the bluntness of the question intended to shatter the last remnants of their fight.
Patrick wrapped his arms around Alex, burying his head over Alex’s left shoulder and pressing a lingering kiss into the side of his neck.
"You want to fuck me?" he whispered into Alex’s ear, the warmth of his breath against Alex’s the skin.
"But you fucked me last time already. You really want to double down on the lead element?"
Alex laughed, the sound muffled by Patrick’s shoulder, a genuine release of the pressure that had been building since the library.
"What do you want to do? You’re the one who was ready to court-martial me five minutes ago."
Patrick pushed himself up on his elbows, remaining positioned over Alex, his broad frame nearly filling the small space of the bed. He stared down at Alex, his blue eyes searching the face for any lingering traces of Marcus Ward’s influence.
"You realize what kind of relationship this is, right?" Patrick asked, a playful, tired smirk touching the corner of his mouth.
"The one where we scream in military jargon until we’re both red in the face, and then we have to physically re-sync the data just to remember who we are?"
"Is there a term for that in the manual?" Alex asked, his fingers tracing the line of Patrick’s jaw.
"This is a unit-specific protocol, Ko. High-intensity friction followed by a complete restoration of the Sovereign State. It’s the only way we know how to survive the machine."
Patrick didn't wait for a rebuttal. He closed the gap, his lips finding Alex’s with a fierce, grounding intensity that finally silenced the rhythmic tapping of Alex’s fingers.
The Restoration of the Sovereign State
Patrick remained braced on his elbows, his broad frame a canopy that blotted out the rest of the world. He didn't move to kiss Alex again immediately; instead, he searched Alex’s eyes, watching the way the pupils dilated, the cold calculation finally drowning in a sea of need.
"You’re always so focused on the next move, Alex," Patrick whispered, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that Alex felt in the very center of his chest.
"Always calculating the drift, the windage, the institutional cost. But right here? There is no next move. There’s just this."
Alex reached up, his fingers sliding at the nape of Patrick’s neck, a sharp departure from the old haircut where he could feel the soft blond hair at the top of Patrick’s head.
As he pulled him down an inch further, he felt the velvet fuzz still left against his palms—a tactile reminder that even with the Navy’s reach, some parts of Patrick remained soft only for him.
"I’m tired of calculating," Alex breathed, his voice breaking.
"Just... weigh me down, Patrick. Make the noise stop."
Patrick obliged, lowering the full, crushing weight of his body against Alex’s. It was a total physical salvage. He moved with a slow, deliberate intensity, kissing the line of Alex’s jaw, his throat, and the pulse point that had finally stopped.
Every touch was a signature on the skin of the only person who truly knew the man behind the rank.
"You have a name," Alex murmured against Patrick’s skin, his hands interlacing with Patrick’s and pinning them against the pillow—a mimicry of restraint that felt like the ultimate freedom.
"You’re mine. Not the 2nd Squad’s. Not the Navy’s. Mine."
The heavy, atmospheric tension of the argument was replaced by the sort of easy, irreverent warmth that only existed when the two of them were completely alone. Alex tilted himself up on his elbows, his persona giving way to a boyish, tired grin.
Patrick was still positioned on top of him, sitting back on his hips—a move that made Alex acutely aware of the hard, insistent pressure of Patrick’s hard dick through the fabric of their shorts.
Alex looked up at Patrick and started laughing, the sound bubbling up from a place of pure relief. "What?" Patrick asked, his brow furrowing in genuine confusion.
"Did I miss a command directive?"
"Nothing," Alex gasped, trying to catch his breath.
"I’m trying to stay in character—I really am—but you’re just so handsome it’s compromising my situational awareness."
Patrick grimaced, though the corner of his mouth was twitching.
"Flattery is a conduct offense, Mr. Ko. Maintain your bearing."
"Bearing be damned," Alex countered, his eyes bright.
"Because I have a tactical update for the mission. I actually came prepared this time. For a change, I didn't rely on the senior officer’s logistics. I have the prophylaxis and the lubrication on-site and ready for deployment." He raised an eyebrow.
"Are you proud of my initiative, Mr. McClellan?"
Patrick’s eyes widened in genuine surprise.
"Wow. You managed a procurement order without me? Where is the supply cache? For inspection…"
Alex pointed toward the backpack slumped on the floor under the desk near the window.
"Securely stowed in the secondary compartment."
Patrick pushed himself off Alex with a grunt of amusement, padding across the room with a focused, predatory grace. He snatched the bag and returned to the bed, straddling Alex’s hips once more as he pulled the zipper back with a loud, metallic rip. He reached inside and his jaw dropped.
Still leaning into the bit, Patrick held up a handful of supplies.
"What is this, Mr. Ko? What was the projected duration of this sortie? How much sex were you planning on having with your husband? There’s enough ordnance in here to last the next ten years."
Alex felt the heat creep into his cheeks, but he didn't look away.
"I was scared," he admitted, his laughter turning soft and sheepish.
"I went into the pharmacy and panicked. I bought one of everything they had on the shelf and told the clerk I was conducting a senior research project on latex durability."
Patrick laughed, the sound rich and grounding, as he tossed the backpack to the foot of the bed and leaned down, his chest brushing against Alex’s.
"Research project, huh?" Patrick whispered, his eyes dark with a mix of humor and adoration.
"Well, I hope you’re ready to defend your thesis, because I’m about to start the peer-review process."
The playful banter fell away like discarded uniforms. Patrick returned his full attention to Alex, his large hands reaching out to pull Alex’s t-shirt over his head. He trailed a line of slow, reverent kisses across Alex’s chest, his lips lingering on the heat of his skin.
Working his way up, he reached for the back of Alex’s head, his fingers sliding over the rough, short-cropped cut—a texture that always acted as a grounding wire, pulling Patrick back to the reality of who they were to each other.
Patrick sat back up on his heels and stripped off his own shirt, tossing it toward the foot of the bed. He took Alex’s hands and guided them to his own chest, letting Alex’s fingers explore the hard lines of his winter training and the heavy muscle of his shoulders.
"So," Patrick said softly, his voice stripped of the professional bark and the defensive sarcasm. He looked directly into Alex’s eyes, offering the open communication they both craved.
"Where are we going? You still want to fuck me?"
Alex didn't hesitate. He nodded, his dark eyes clouded with a raw, undeniable desire. Patrick slid off him, moving with focused deliberation as he unbuttoned Alex’s cargo shorts and pulled them away.
He stepped back for a moment, shedding the rest of his own clothes until they lay entirely exposed to one another in the dim room.
When Patrick moved back onto the bed, the playfulness dissolved into something fierce and demanding.
He leaned down, his mouth tracing the sensitive skin of Alex’s inner thigh, breathing in the sharp, clean scent of the man he had fallen for so completely.
He took his time, his tongue sliding along the heavy length of Alex's cock, trailing up to the head to catch the sweet, slick bead of pre-cum.
Alex let out a low, guttural moan that vibrated deep through the mattress, his fingers locking into the mattress sheets as his analytical defenses completely surrendered.
Patrick looked up, his gaze dark and intense.
"Alex," he whispered, his thumb slicking over the crown of Alex's dick.
"Tell me what you want."
"You," Alex gasped, his breath hitching as his hips twitched upward against Patrick's hand.
