Chapter 41 #4

"I know."

"But I think..."

She looked toward the hallway.

"I think we needed this."

Jingjing smiled.

"Then today's lunch is on me."

Orm immediately shook her head.

"No."

"Yes."

"Jingjing-"

"Consider it a celebration."

"Of what?"

Jingjing smiled.

"Bravery."

She paused.

"And love."

Orm's eyes filled.

Jingjing squeezed her hand.

"Sometimes love deserves to be celebrated even before it knows where it's going."

Orm smiled.

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me."

Jingjing leaned back.

"Just be happy."

Orm looked down at their hands.

"I'll try."

"That's enough."

Orm showed Jingjing one of their taken photos in the sea.

A little later, Lingling returned with Liam.

Soon after, Fluke joined them.

He took one look at the three of them and smiled.

"Well."

Lingling raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

Fluke sat down.

"After four years, you two finally talked."

Orm laughed softly.

"Apparently."

Fluke looked between them.

"I'm happy for you."

Lingling nodded.

"Thank you."

"For forgiving each other."

Orm's smile softened.

"For finding each other again."

Fluke lifted his glass.

"Whatever happens next, I'm glad you stopped running."

Lingling looked at Orm.

Orm looked back.

Neither corrected him.

They hadn't completely found their way back.

Not yet.

But they were walking toward each other.

And sometimes...

That was enough.

After lunch, Fluke returned to the hotel room he shared with Lingling.

He still had work to finish.

He waved goodbye.

"Enjoy your beach day."

"We will."

-

The afternoon belonged to the three of them.

Lingling had rented a small yacht for a quiet tour around Phuket Island.

Liam was ecstatic.

"Wingwing!"

"Yes?"

"WE HAVE A BOAT!"

Lingling laughed.

"We do."

"It's OUR boat?"

"For today."

Liam's eyes widened.

"Mommy!"

Orm laughed.

"He's going to remember this forever."

"I hope so."

Liam spent the entire trip moving from one side of the yacht to another.

He asked questions about everything.

Why was the water blue?

How deep was the ocean?

Could fish see them?

Could the boat fly?

Could Lingling build a bigger boat?

Could they build a house on the ocean?

Lingling answered every question.

Even the ridiculous ones.

Eventually, they stopped somewhere quieter.

They swam.

Liam wore his life vest while Lingling stayed close to him.

Orm splashed water toward them.

Liam immediately retaliated.

"Mommy!"

Orm laughed.

"Hey!"

Lingling joined Liam.

Soon, both of them were splashing Orm.

"Traitors!"

Orm shouted.

Liam laughed so loudly that his entire body shook.

Lingling looked at Orm.

And for a moment, she simply watched.

Orm in the sunlight.

Liam laughing.

The ocean surrounding them.

The warmth.

The happiness.

It looked like a picture of a life she had once thought she would never have.

Orm caught her staring.

"What?"

Lingling smiled.

"Nothing."

But it wasn't nothing.

It was everything.

-

By evening, they returned to the hotel.

Liam was exhausted.

The little boy barely made it through dinner before yawning repeatedly.

Orm smiled.

"Someone's sleepy."

"No."

Liam insisted.

He yawned again.

Lingling laughed.

"Definitely not sleepy."

"No."

He yawned.

Orm kissed his forehead.

"Of course not."

Eventually, they changed into comfortable clothes and climbed into bed.

Liam insisted on sleeping in the middle.

"Mommy here."

He pointed.

"Wingwing here."

Then he positioned himself between them.

"Me here."

Lingling laughed.

"You're in charge?"

Liam nodded.

"Yes."

Orm smiled.

"Apparently."

Liam closed his eyes.

Within minutes, he was asleep.

His tiny hand was still holding Lingling's finger.

Orm looked at him.

Then at Lingling.

"Thank you."

Lingling turned toward her.

"For today?"

Orm nodded.

"For everything."

Lingling smiled.

"Thank you too."

"For what?"

"For letting me have today."

Orm's eyes softened.

"I think I needed today too."

They both looked at Liam.

The little boy slept peacefully between them.

His chest rising and falling softly.

His face relaxed.

His hand still wrapped around Lingling's finger.

Orm smiled.

"He really likes you."

Lingling looked at him.

"I like him too."

"He's been asking about you."

"I know."

Orm looked at her.

"Thank you for loving and accepting him."

Lingling's eyes softened.

"I don't think I'll have any trouble with that."

Orm smiled.

"I know."

Silence settled over them.

Not uncomfortable.

Not painful.

Just quiet.

Lingling reached across Liam carefully.

She took Orm's hand.

Orm squeezed it.

They leaned toward each other.

Their lips met in a gentle kiss.

Nothing more.

Just a quiet goodnight between two people who had been apart for too long.

When they separated, Lingling whispered,

"Goodnight, Orm."

"Goodnight, Ling."

They both leaned down.

Orm kissed Liam's left cheek.

Lingling kissed his right.

Liam stirred slightly but didn't wake.

Orm smiled.

"He's beautiful."

Lingling nodded.

"He is, he got his looks after you."

Orm looked at the little boy.

Then at Lingling.

"Maybe this is enough for tonight."

Lingling understood.

No promises.

No labels.

No pretending.

Just this.

A family that wasn't quite a family yet.

A love that wasn't quite a relationship yet.

A future that hadn't been decided.

But there was something there.

Something warm.

Something real.

Something worth protecting.

Orm closed her eyes.

Lingling gently pulled the blanket higher over all three of them.

Liam remained between them.

Safe.

Warm.

Loved.

And as Orm slowly drifted toward sleep, she felt Lingling's fingers intertwine with hers.

Four years ago, she had gone to sleep with tears on her pillow.

Tonight, she fell asleep holding Lingling's hand.

The difference was everything.

They didn't get back together.

Not because the past had disappeared.

Not because the four years no longer mattered.

Not because the pain had suddenly stopped hurting.

Not because forgiveness erased everything.

And certainly not because love had magically fixed all their problems.

They weren't there yet.

There were still wounds.

Still conversations.

Still fears.

Still distance.

Still a future they couldn't predict.

But after everything...

They had chosen to begin again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Honestly.

Lingling looked at Orm.

Orm looked back.

And for the first time in four years, neither of them was looking at the other as a memory.

They were looking at each other as a possibility.

A future.

A second chance.

A home.

Lingling gently kissed Orm's forehead.

Orm closed her eyes.

And somewhere beyond the window, the ocean continued to whisper against the shore.

Soft.

Rhythmic.

Unchanged.

But inside that room, two lives had finally begun to change again.

The future was uncertain.

The road ahead would not be easy.

There would be distance.

There would be healing.

There would be fear.

There would be moments when the past hurt again.

There would be days when they wondered whether they were doing the right thing.

But this time...

Neither of them would have to face those moments alone.

Because they had each other.

And now...

They had Liam between them, sleeping peacefully, unaware of how much his little heart had already helped mend two broken ones.

Perhaps that was enough for tonight.

Enough to try.

Enough to forgive.

Enough to hope.

Enough to love.

One step at a time.

One morning at a time.

One memory at a time.

One day at a time.

And after four years of wandering...

They had finally found their way home.

Together.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But they were walking there.

And this time...

Neither of them was going anywhere.
