Ghost

I woke to the sound of a monitor beeping.

My entire body was sore as shit. My eyes drifted around the room to find Luxe sitting in a chair next to my bed with her head laying on the edge.

Her fingers were intertwined with mine. On the opposite side of the room was Ma.

She was stretched out on the couch with a throw blanket covering her.

It was dark as shit outside. I wasn’t sure how long I’d been out.

I wiggled my finger, and Luxe’s head jumped up. Her eyes expanded as she stared at me. “You’re awake!”

The sound of her voice woke Ma. She rushed over to the side of the bed and stroked my forehead.

“We thought we were gon’ lose you,” Luxe made known. When I looked at her, I noticed she was wearing a hospital gown.

“You got hurt?”

She shook her head. “I told you I didn’t.” Sensing my confusion, she said, “My clothes were bloody when I got here, so they gave me a gown to put on. Savion has men covering the entire hospital.”

After I got shot like that, I figured he was gon’ take over the operation. Work wasn’t safe for Luxe anymore. I shouldn’t have been letting her go to that building in the first place, knowing the threat that was over her life. I was looking at it as my fault at this point.

“We’re just happy that you’re okay. You lost a lot of blood and had to have a transfusion,” Ma said and then leaned down and pecked me on the forehead.

“Did they catch who did it?”

“Nope. Savion looked at the surveillance from the garage. Whoever did it, they made sure to wear a mask, and the truck didn’t have any plates on it. He followed the truck for as far as he could with traffic cameras, but they disappeared somewhere after leaving the city.”

“You really don’t need to be worrying about all that right now. You need to be focusing on getting better,” Ma said.

“She’s right. Just leave it up to Savion. I’m sure he’ll be able to handle it.”

I felt like a complete failure even though Luxe didn’t get hit. Now I was stuck in a hospital bed instead of being able to find out who was trying to kill her.

The following morning

Dietary came into the room with breakfast. “Good morning,” she spoke as she set the tray on the table.

“Good morning.”

She left out of the room, and Luxe came out of the bathroom. “What they brought you this morning? The food been so bland.”

“How you know?”

“I’ve been the one eating your food.” She snickered.

“You need to be focusing on getting some clothes. Savion and nem couldn’t bring you any?”

“What?” She twirled in the hospital gown. “You don’t like my evening gown?”

“Now who is getting on who nerves?”

“I’ll get me some clothes. Ask Solei to run and grab me some stuff.”

That was her best bet because after that shooting, she wasn’t leaving my side.

Luxe came over to the bed and climbed in alongside me. She pulled my tray over in front of us and opened it. “You need to eat. It might taste like something today.”

It was just a simple bacon, eggs, toast, and grits. The eggs looked like they weren’t gon’ have a taste.

“Why don’t you just order something. This shit looks like it’s just gon’ piss me off.”

“Aww, you want me to order you something, babe?” Her eyes twinkled as she stared at me. “I can do that. What do you want?”

She lifted from the bed, and I caught her by the wrist, pulling her back. It didn’t matter that I caught a sharp pain in my chest. “Thank you.” She could’ve walked away from me in that garage, but she didn’t. She’d been by my side ever since, and I knew this was the woman for me.
