Epilogue
T hree years later
Regan sat in the overstuffed chair in the nursery and watched her husband speak baby talk to their two-month-old son, while she fed his twin sister.
The three loves of her life together, bonding even more than they already had.
The bond between father and son was so strong, sometimes little Nicky wouldn’t go to sleep for her and demanded his father.
Yes, he demanded. He was a baby, and some would say he was spoiled. She didn’t believe you could spoil a baby just by giving them the love they deserved.
Cole turned his gaze to her. “Thank you, my darling, for giving me my son and my daughter. I’ve never been so happy since the day I married you. And that was the best day of my life. It still is.”
“The doctor gave me the okay to make love again. What do you say we lay down for a nap when these two are settled?”
His grin took on a wolfish quality. “I say that’s a wonderful idea.”
“You’ll have to use a condom unless you want more children right away, which I do not. Two is enough in diapers without adding another a year from now.”
“I’ll take care of us. I couldn’t agree more that our family is big enough, for now. Besides, I’d like to spend some private time with just the two of us.”
“Well, they sleep a lot, for now. That can be our private time.”
“Are you sure taking care of two babies isn’t too much? I can hire a nanny. You, uh, know we can afford it.”
She chuckled. “Yes, dear, I know we can afford it, but I want to take care of my children. I don’t want them raised by a stranger.”
He nodded. “I feel the same way, but I didn’t want to say something that might force you into a decision you didn’t want. Besides, we have built in babysitters. Our parents are more than happy to provide that service so they can spend more time with the babies.”
“I know, but both of our mothers managed to raise us without nannies, so we can do it, too.” She moved little Rebecca to the other side to nurse.
She looked down at the baby, feeling her heart fill with joy and love.
“We’ll have to start feeding them formula.
I can’t make enough milk for both of them with the amount they are eating now. ”
“Then that’s what we’ll do. I can feed one of them a bottle while you nurse the other, and then we’ll switch.”
“That will work as long as you’re not working. When you go back to the office it will be more difficult.”
“I don’t have to go back to the office. I’ll arrange to do all my work from here. Papers that I need can be sent by a delivery service or one of the office staff can bring them down. I don’t think they will mind getting out of the office or seeing the babies occasionally.”
Regan gazed down at her baby daughter. She and her brother both had their father’s dark hair and, for right now, at least, his blue eyes.
It wouldn’t surprise her in the least if Nicky was the spitting image of his father, as his Grandma Madelyn insisted he was.
Or that Rebecca grew up looking exactly like her Aunt Megan, but hopefully, with Regan’s green eyes.
Rebecca was falling asleep now. Regan pulled her nipple from the baby’s mouth and then straightened her blouse. She stood and placed the infant in her crib on her back and covered her with a light blanket.
Cole did the same with Nicky.
When they were done and the babies were tucked in, Cole pulled Regan into his arms and kissed her thoroughly.
The love she felt coming through his kiss made her weak in the knees. Her life was truly blessed.
He took her hand and led her out of the nursery and to their bedroom next door. He turned, taking her in his arms.
She wrapped her arms around his neck.
He smiled as he pulled her close. “I love you more today than yesterday. I never knew love could grow like this. You saved me.”
“Just like you saved me.” She gazed into the deep blue ocean of his eyes. They shined bright with love. “I have everything I could ever want. Even if we lost all the money, I would still consider myself the luckiest woman on the planet.”
“And I am the luckiest man since you came into my life.”
“Ah, you say the nicest things.” She leaned up and kissed him.
He kissed her back, and then they renewed their love for each other while their babies slept peacefully in the next room.
