Chapter 24 #3

“Look at you,” he whispered, his voice a silken, venomous tease.

“Your defiance is screaming, but your body is already begging for the opposite. It is almost a pity we are enemies. I suspect you would be a talented submissive between the sheets. You have a natural, filthy aptitude for yielding to a stronger hand. You’re a quick study, little Aenite.

And I haven't even given you a reason to feel guilty yet.”

The crude assessment, the open taunt, fuelled my rage past the point of fear. I felt my face burn, humiliated by my body’s betrayal.

Guilty?” I spat, the word laced with venom, my breath strained beneath his grip.

“I am not a thing to be mastered! Caspian treated me as an equal in all things that mattered! He never degraded me by demanding I yield—he offered me reverence, not this barbaric need to conquer! I’ll feel guilt when I look at his lips and remember the cold, dead taste of yours!

I will always remember a softness and a love you couldn’t possibly fathom! ”

My breath hitched, and before I could utter another syllable of defence, his mouth crashed down on mine.

It wasn't a kiss; it was an annihilation.

It was pure, savage destruction, a violent attempt to break my will and possess my soul with the sheer, crushing force of his need.

His lips were bruising, demanding, hot with fury and cold with magic.

I felt the terrifying magnetic pull of the Void hooking into my core, threatening to drag my light into his darkness and swallow it whole.

I tried to shove him away, to bite him, to scream—but then, the magic shifted.

As his mouth moved against mine—devouring, relentless—I felt the sharp, jagged edges of my agony begin to dissolve.

He wasn't just kissing me; he was siphoning.

I felt the necrotic throb in my shoulder and the ice in my marrow being pulled upward, drawn into his own Void.

He was drinking my suffering like wine, creating a sudden, violent vacuum in my nervous system where the pain used to be.

But unlike the cold emptiness I expected, the absence of pain left a Void that was instantly, violently filled with something else.

Pleasure.

A narcotic euphoria. It rushed in to fill the sensory silence he created—a hot, liquid gold that flooded my veins, heavier and sweeter than any wine.

It was a chemical assault, a dizzying aphrodisiac triggered by the sudden cessation of agony.

My brain, starved for a signal in the wake of his consumption, misfired into a blinding, artificial bliss that tasted of winter air and pomegranates.

My knees buckled.

He caught me instantly, his arm banding like iron around my waist, hauling me flush against his hard body, refusing to let me fall even as he refused to let me breathe.

My mind shrieked its defiance, screaming that this was a weapon, a trick, a biological violation—but my body was drowning in the drug of the relief. I moaned against his lips, a soft, desperate sound of involuntary surrender that he devoured with a primal hunger.

I was floating in a drugging haze, my senses unmade by his touch. My body sought his with a drugged, desperate instinct. I pressed my hips forward, grinding against him, starving for friction, for heat, for skin. But I found no purchase.

I was soft flesh crashing against a fortress of obsidian steel.

The ceremonial armour—that accursed, impenetrable shell—mocked me, a wall of cold black metal keeping me from the fire beneath.

I cursed the plating. I cursed the House that forged it.

I wanted to tear the steel from his body, not to love him, but to find the vulnerability of the male underneath this metal cage.

I clawed at his armoured chest, my fingers scrabbling uselessly against the cold black metal, not to push him away, but to pull him closer. I wanted to hate him. I did hate him. But the relief was so absolute, the pleasure so blinding, that I opened to him completely.

It was a clash of souls, agonisingly painful and overwhelmingly potent.

It was wrong, a betrayal of everything I stood for, but the terrifying power of his raw demand was a fire I couldn't extinguish.

For a single, breathless eternity, I forgot Caspian.

I forgot the Treaty. I forgot my own name.

There was only the taste of the monster, and the terrifying realisation that I tasted like home to him.

The psychological tension was suddenly, violently shattered by the familiar bond.

“Ophelia! PULL BACK! His power is spiking! You’re going to be consumed! PULL BACK!” Poppy's voice, high, panicked, and fully audible only to my mind, screamed into my consciousness.

The intrusion, Poppy screaming my fear, broke the spell or perhaps it was my own faculties returning.

Cain tore his mouth away, his breath ragged, his eyes wide with self-disgust and a cold, blinding rage directed at the intrusive reality. He shoved me away, the violence of his recoil fuelled by shame.

I slumped against the wall, my throat aching, my lips stinging and swollen. I was shaking not from fear, but from the terrifying magnetic truth of our collision. He had not just kissed me; he had tried to possess my soul and had only been stopped by the fear I heard in Poppy’s scream.

I felt the cold, familiar hatred flooding back into my core, purified by the shock. We had crossed a line, and now, we were back to pure, unadulterated hatred.
