Chapter Sixty-One
The transition into October brought a crisp, definitive bite to the coastal air. The high summer greens of the hedgerows had given way to a rich, turning gold, and the pale northern sunlight cast long, clean shadows across the flagstones of The Gables’ kitchen.
Lydia sat at her small bureau by the window, the heavy leather B&B ledger pushed to one side.
On the polished wood before her lay a clean sheet of paper, her pen poised as she prepared the text for the upcoming edition of the local newspaper.
It was a practical milestone, but one that carried a quiet, steady weight: she was officially preparing to step back from the daily running of her business to make room for the family life awaiting her across the hedge.
The summer bookings had exceeded every forecast, giving her enough confidence to appoint someone before the wedding.
The Gables’ scullery door clicked open, and William stepped inside, carrying a small box of fresh kindling for the hearth. He had just finished his run of day shifts in the rota, but his broad shoulders were relaxed, his eyes bright as he caught sight of her at the desk.
“Morning,” William said, his low voice filling the quiet room with familiar peace. He set the kindling down by the range and walked over, his hand coming to rest on her shoulder. “Is that the advert for the new manager?”
“It is,” Lydia smiled, turning her head to look up at him.
The sapphire on her finger caught the autumn light as she tapped the edge of the paper.
“I’m trying to make the wording precise.
I need someone who understands proper order, but I don’t want to sound quite as formidable as Sally did during her inspection week. ”
William chuckled softly, his thumb brushing her collarbone with the easy familiarity that had become second nature.
“Just write down exactly what you require, Lydia. Honesty, patience and a good head for figures. Anyone who can manage your breakfast trays and keep the ledger straight will do just fine.”
Lydia lowered her pen to the page and began to write, her script clear and resolute.
VACANCY: LIVE-IN MANAGER — THE GABLES B&B, SANDY LANE
A capable and reliable individual is required to oversee the daily running of a successful coastal guest house, including guest services, breakfast provision, bookings and basic accounts. Private accommodation provided. Position commencing in late autumn. Applications to The Gables.
“There,” Lydia said softly, blowing lightly on the ink before looking back up at him. “Once this is in the paper, the shift officially begins. It feels remarkably real now, William.”
William closed his fingers around hers and drew her gently to her feet. “It is real, Lydia. You don’t have to arrange everything at once.”
She stepped into his arms, resting her forehead against his shoulder in the quiet warmth of the kitchen. The advertisement was ready, the wedding was drawing closer, and for once she did not feel the need to have every detail settled in advance.
Whatever changed at The Gables, she would not be leaving one life behind. She was making room for another.
