CHAPTER 18

“Sometimes the most impulsive actions turn out to be the best choices for those who need to prove something to themselves.”

COLIN ADAMS

I decided to take the first step. A risky one.

“I’m nervous. What’s going on?”

I still didn’t know why I was doing this—especially after calling Henry a few minutes ago. The cheerful one, of course.

I’d invited him over to my place, which was rare enough, since he’s the master of showing up unannounced. He knows damn well I’m not the kind of guy who invites anyone to anything.

“We’re going out tonight,” I blurted, even though I was nervous as hell. I had no idea why I was taking such a reckless step.

Naturally, the man burst out laughing right in my face. I mean, when in his life would he ever expect to hear something like that coming from me?

Yeah, I actually called him over just to tell him we were going out for drinks tonight at some random bar in Miami—with no plan to come back anytime soon.

“To what do I owe the honor? Oh, and if this is a prank, I’ll be really pissed, you can bet on that.”

“I’m tired of staying home. And it’s not a prank.”

This was all Isabelle’s fault. Seeing her every day was driving me insane, and I couldn’t exactly ask her to stop crossing paths with me in my own house.

“So where are we going? A bar? A club? A swingers’ party?”

Jesus Christ…

“Do I look like someone who goes to those places?”

“You never know. The quiet ones are always the worst.” He shrugged.

“I’m not quiet!” I snapped, louder than I intended.

“You’re just... stiff.”

Henry kept teasing me, and like an idiot, I kept taking the bait. Damn the moment this idea to go out crossed my mind.

“Make yourself at home for a few minutes. I’m gonna get ready, then we’ll head out.”

“I’ll be in the game room playing pool—getting warmed up.”

“Whatever.”

“Don’t take too long. It’s already a miracle you invited me out. I don’t wanna give you time to change your mind.” He walked toward the game room.

“I’m a man of my word,” I said, though deep down, I was already starting to regret leaving the mansion at all.
