15. She is not greedy.
Sophia's Pov:
After exchanging numbers with Oliver, I sent him my resume.
He looked at it briefly and smiled.
“I’ll schedule your interview,” he said. “But just so you know, the final selection is done by the board members. Even though I own the company, I won’t interfere in the process.”
Then he chuckled lightly.
“Though honestly, I think they would be lucky to have you.”
His words made me smile.
“Thank you,” I said softly.
He nodded.
“Let’s meet soon.”
June and I said goodbye to him, and soon after, June hurried off to her office.
I booked a cab back to her apartment.
As soon as I got there, I changed into formal clothes for the interviews I had scheduled for the day.
I had just finished getting ready when my phone buzzed.
It was a message from the lawyer.
:The notice has been sent to Mr. Adrian Whitmore.:
I stared at the message for a few seconds.
So it was official now.
The papers had reached him.
There was no going back.
A strange nervousness settled inside me.
Before I could think too much, my phone buzzed again.
This time it was Oliver.
:I’ve scheduled your interview for tomorrow morning. Is that okay?:
I replied quickly.
:Yes, that’s perfectly fine. Thank you so much.:
His reply came almost instantly.
:No, I should be thanking you if such a skilled coder is joining my company.:
I smiled faintly but didn’t know what to reply.
My interview wasn’t even done yet.
What if I didn’t get selected?
I kept my phone aside, collected my documents, and left for the interviews I had scheduled for the day.
---
After the second interview, I stepped out of the office building feeling exhausted.
I took off my coat and held it in my hand as I walked outside.
Instead of booking a cab, I decided to walk back to June’s apartment.
Cab fares were adding up too quickly, and I needed to save money.
As I walked, my thoughts kept replaying the interviews.
At first, things had gone well.
I answered their technical questions confidently.
For a moment, I felt hopeful.
But then came the question I had been dreading.
“Why haven’t you worked in the last five years?”
I couldn’t tell them the truth.
I just said,
“Personal issues.”
And I could immediately see their expressions change.
In the last interview, the interviewer had frowned and asked,
“So these personal issues won’t affect your work in the future?”
I had answered quickly,
“No, they won’t.”
But I could tell he doubted me.
I knew he judged me.
By the time I reached June’s apartment, almost forty-five minutes had passed.
I was tired, anxious, and emotionally drained.
I reached into my bag—
and froze.
I didn’t have the apartment keys in my bag , where did they go I kept them here only.
I stared at the locked door in disbelief.
Then I slowly sat down on the floor near the entrance and buried my face in my hands.
“Oh God,” I muttered to myself. “Why am I so dumb?”
The frustration, the exhaustion, the uncertainty—
everything crashed over me at once.

Adrian’s POV:
When I entered my cabin, I noticed an envelope lying on my desk.
I frowned.
Looking at my manager, I asked,
“What is this?”
He replied,
“It came in your name, sir. It’s from the court.”
I dismissed him and opened the envelope.
The moment I saw the contents, my body stiffened.
It was a divorce notice.
From Sophia’s lawyer.
I knew this was coming.
But I hadn’t expected it this soon.
As I kept reading, something caught my attention.
She had declined alimony.
I stared at that line.
For a moment, I couldn’t process it.
Vanessa had told me that Sophia was probably doing all this for money.
And somewhere, I had believed it.
But Sophia wasn’t asking for anything.
No money.
Nothing.
A strange guilt crept into my chest.
Had I been wrong about her all along?
Before I could think further, the door opened.
Vanessa walked in.
She had once been my personal assistant, but after we got closer, I assigned her to bigger projects.
Now she had complete freedom to come and go.
Everyone in the office knew she was my girlfriend and not Lily’s mother.
No one knew about Sophia.
Our marriage had always been a secret but not my daughter.
Without saying anything, I handed Vanessa the envelope.
She read it quickly.
Then her face lit up.
She rushed to hug me.
“Oh my God, babe, finally! That bitch is gone.”
She laughed lightly.
“And the best part? She isn’t even asking for alimony.”
I gave a small nod, but I didn’t smile.
Because instead of relief—
I felt guilt.
For years, I had believed Sophia was with me for money.
But if that were true—
why would she walk away with nothing?
Before Vanessa could say anything more, I said,
“Come on. We need to pick Lily up from school.”
Vanessa immediately sighed in annoyance.
“Oh God, that girl…”
I looked at her.
She rolled her eyes.
“You both have spoiled her. Last night she ruined our moment too. Why can’t James or Mary pick her up?”
I stared at her for a second.
Something about her tone unsettled me.
I didn’t want another argument, especially after the one we had in the morning after I left her apartment for Lily without informing her, so I said quietly,
“If you don’t want to come, it’s fine.”
She shrugged.
“Yeah, okay. You go to your daughter.”
She turned away casually.
But I remained standing there for a moment.
Because suddenly I noticed something I had ignored before.
Ever since Sophia left—
Vanessa had become impatient with Lily.
And for the first time—
it bothered me.
