38. Daniel

DANIEL

Ikiss her softly at first. I am not starving in the same way tonight. I am home. That makes the hunger deeper.

Nora's hands slide under my shirt. Her palms are warm against my stomach. I shudder.

She smiles against my mouth. "Still sensitive."

"To you? Always."

She pulls my shirt up. I help her take it off. Then I take my time with her. I unbutton her black Honey & Rye shirt one button at a time. Kiss the skin I reveal. Throat. Collarbone. The soft place between her breasts where her pulse jumps under my mouth.

She tips her head back. "Daniel."

"I'm here."

"I know."

The answer almost stops me. I know. She knows. Not hopes. Not needs proof every second. Knows.

We undress each other beside the bed. No rush. No panic. Still clumsy, because pants are badly designed and Nora gets one foot caught in hers and nearly falls into the dresser. I catch her.

She glares at me. "Do not laugh."

"I would never."

Then I look at her. Naked in our room. Soft stomach, strong thighs, hair loose around her shoulders, mouth swollen from me, eyes bright with embarrassment and desire and trust that makes me want to earn it until I die.

"Beautiful," I say.

"You say that like it hurts."

"It does."

Her face softens. "Come here."

I do. We fall onto the bed together, slower than before but no less hungry. Her legs part for me like she has been waiting too, and that knowledge goes straight through me.

I kiss her everywhere I can reach. Her mouth. Her jaw. Her breasts. The stretch marks on her stomach that I have learned she lets me touch now without flinching. Each time I put my mouth there, she goes quiet in a way that tells me it still matters. So I do it again.

"Daniel," she whispers.

"Too much?"

"No." Her fingers slide into my hair. "Good."

I kiss lower. Her hips lift.

Then my mouth is between her legs, and she stops teasing me. I lick her slowly because we have time. Because no phone is on the nightstand waiting to drag me away. She is wet already, hot and soft under my tongue, and I lick from her opening to her clit slow enough that she curses.

"Daniel."

"Yes?"

"Do not get smug."

I circle her clit with my tongue and feel her thighs tense against my shoulders.

"There," she says.

So I stay there. I slide two fingers into her, curling them slowly, and suck her clit between my lips. She comes with a cry she tries to muffle in the pillow.

I lift my head. "No. I want to hear you."

Her face flushes. "Bossy."

"Only about the important things."

I lower my mouth again and lick her through the aftershocks until her hand tightens in my hair.

"Daniel, please."

I lift my head. "Tell me."

"Inside me."

I move up her body, kissing as I go. I settle between her thighs, and the first press of my cock against her makes both of us go still. Not with fear. With recognition.

"Come inside me," she says, and her voice is warm now. Certain. "I like it. I like knowing you're there."

I close my eyes. "You're going to kill me."

"No," she says. "You're very dramatic, but I need you alive."

I laugh, and then I push into her.

Home. There is no other word.

Her body takes me slowly, tight and wet and familiar, and I have to stop halfway in because the feeling is too much.

"Daniel?"

"I'm happy," I say, and my voice breaks around the word. "Give me a second."

Her hands come to my face. "Take it."

So I do. Then I sink the rest of the way inside her.

We both moan. This time, I do not rush to move. I stay buried deep and kiss her. Slow, open kisses that taste like heat and salt and the life I almost lost.

"Move," she whispers.

I move. Slow. Deep. The bed creaks under us, slow and steady. Nora's eyes stay open, locked on mine, and that almost undoes me more than anything else. She wants to see me. Wants me to see her. No hiding.

"Like this?" I ask.

"Yes."

"Harder?"

"Not yet."

I keep the rhythm easy and deep until her nails bite into my shoulders.

"More," she says.

I give her more. Harder now. Not frantic. Not taking. I fuck my wife deep and steady, watching her face, feeling every clench of her around me.

She is close before she says it. I feel it. Her body tightens. Her hands move down to my ass, pulling me deeper.

"Nora."

"I know." Her voice is breathless. "Come with me."

I change the angle. There. That place inside her that makes her lose every clever thing she has ever thought. I grind into it, slow and hard, and her eyes go wide.

Her orgasm hits her in waves, her body pulsing around me, and I have no chance. None.

I come with my face buried in her neck, holding myself deep while my cock pulses inside her. It feels endless. Warm and blinding and full of every night I did not come home and every night I will.

When it is over, I do not move away. I stay inside her until I soften, until she touches my hair and whispers, "Daniel, my leg is falling asleep."

I laugh into her shoulder. "Sorry."

"You are not."

"No."

I pull out slowly, and she shivers. I clean her because I like doing it, because she lets me now without looking like tenderness might break her. Then I come back to bed and pull her against me.

This time she comes willingly. No flinch. No held breath. Her head on my chest. Her hand over my heart.

For a long time, we just lie there. The apartment is quiet. Below us, the bakery refrigerators hum, and outside, a car passes through rain left over from an evening storm. It is not glamorous. It is perfect.

"We need to talk about the penthouse," Nora says.

I open one eye. "After sex?"

"You said you wanted a real marriage. Real marriage includes logistics."

"Cruel but fair."

"I don't know if I can live there."

"Then we don't."

She goes quiet. I wait. She lifts her head. "Just like that?"

"Yes."

"That place is worth--"

"Less than you."

Her eyes narrow. "Do not be smooth at me."

"That was not smooth. That was math."

She tries not to smile.

"Where do you want to live?" I ask.

"I don't know yet."

"Then we don't decide yet."

"June needs stability."

"Then we keep her stable. Your parents' house, this apartment, wherever you want. We can buy something in Jersey. We can sell the penthouse, keep it, whatever helps. I don't want money to be the thing that traps you."

"You can't just say that."

"I know."

I reach carefully toward the nightstand and pick up the folder I brought upstairs earlier. Nora looks at it.

"You brought paperwork to bed?"

"Not to bed. Near bed."

"That is not better."

I hand it to her anyway. She sits up, holding the sheet to her chest, and opens the folder.

Her face changes as she reads. Not all at once. Line by line.

The Honey & Rye building transferred into a trust she controls.

Operating money for the reopening, no ownership stake for me.

June's trust fully funded, with Nora as primary trustee.

The Jersey house option, if she wants one, titled to her separately.

The penthouse available to her if she wants it, sold if she does not.

Postnup revisions. Support terms that do not vanish if she leaves me.

Custody promise restated. Her lawyer has already reviewed the draft. I made sure of that.

I watch her read the part that matters most.

If Nora Welling requests physical separation at any time, Daniel Welling will vacate the marital residence within twenty-four hours, and all protections, business funding, child support, and property transfers remain in effect.

Her hand shakes.

"Daniel."

"If you ever need me gone," I say, "I go."

She looks up. "Don't."

"I need to say it."

"I don't want you gone."

"I know. I hope you never do." My throat tightens. "But I need you to know staying with me is not the price of safety. Not anymore."

Tears fill her eyes. "You are making it very hard to argue with you."

"That's new for me."

She looks back down at the papers. "This is a lot of money."

"It should have been safety all along. The money.

The houses. The accounts. All of it." I sit up too, because this matters and I do not want to say it lying down like a man hoping sex softened the edges.

"I used money like a future tense. Like someday, when there was enough of it, I would make up for being gone.

But money in my hands became another reason I had the power to leave.

So it goes in your hands now. Not as an apology. Not as payment. As structure."

"Structure," she repeats.

"The kind where you can leave if you need to, stay if you want to, build Honey & Rye because it is yours, raise June knowing she is protected, and tell me no without wondering if I can make your life harder."

Her tears spill over. "I hate that I need this."

"I hate that I made you need it."

"I want to trust you without paperwork."

"Maybe someday you will." I touch her knee under the sheet, then stop. "Can I?"

She nods. I cover her knee with my hand.

"Until then," I say, "paperwork can hold what your heart should not have to."

She starts crying then. Not hard. Quietly. The kind of crying that feels like something frozen thawing and hurting while it does.

I put the folder aside. "Can I hold you?"

She wipes her face with the back of her hand. "Yes."

I pull her into my arms. She comes. She cries into my chest, and I hold her, and I do not tell her it is okay because it is not. It is only starting to be.

After a while, she says, "I want you home."

Everything in me stops.

"Nora."

She lifts her head. Her face is wet, her eyes are scared, her mouth is firm.

"Not visiting. Not asking every night if you can stay like you're a guest I might politely send away. I want you home."

I cannot speak. I try. Nothing happens.

Nora's mouth trembles. "Say something."

"I'm afraid if I speak, I'm going to beg."

"For what?"

"For the rest of my life."

Her eyes soften. "You already have that."

I break. Not dramatically. But something in me breaks open and settles at the same time.

I touch her face. "Can I kiss you?"

She gives me a look through her tears. "Daniel, I just asked you to come home. Yes, you can kiss me."

So I do. Softly first. Then not softly at all. She laughs against my mouth, and I roll her under me, and the folder slides off the bed onto the floor.

"The paperwork," she says.

"Still legally binding on the floor."

We make love again before morning. Slower.

Sleepier. My wife on top of me this time, hair falling around us, hands on my chest, hips moving in a rhythm that makes me forget every room I ever thought I wanted to be in.

I hold her hips and let her take what she wants.

She rides me until her head falls back, until I have to grit my teeth and beg her to slow down.

She smiles down at me. "You okay?"

"Deeply not."

"Good."

She comes first, with my name in her mouth and her hands braced over my heart. I follow her seconds later, coming inside her again while she leans down and kisses me through it.

After, she sleeps across my chest. I do not sleep for a while. Not because I am afraid anymore. Because I do not want to miss it.

The next night, I come home with takeout and June's repaired yellow star lamp. Nora opens the door before I knock.

"You're late," she says.

"By six minutes."

"Scandalous."

June runs unsteadily toward me in pajamas with moons on them.

"Daddy!"

I crouch and catch her. Home. The word moves through me with the weight of a vow.

The night after that, I come home with paint samples because Nora has decided the bakery office is "emotionally beige" and cannot be allowed to continue.

The night after that, I come home to Nora asleep on the couch and June asleep against her, both of them warm and safe and mine only because they choose to let me belong.

I put a blanket over them and sit on the floor beside the couch until Nora wakes enough to say, "Come to bed."

So I do.

The night after that, and the night after that, and the night after that.
