Evidence of Beginnings
AVERY
The notebooks arrived in a cardboard produce box wrapped with workshop tape.
Leila had packed thirty-one years of repair notes, grocery receipts, fabric samples, and Avery’s grandmother’s impossible handwriting together as if evidence and lunch lists belonged to the same archive.
Avery opened the box in the legal trailer.
The first notebook contained balloon repairs. The second recorded Avery’s college experiments. Her grandmother had written dates, sensor serial numbers, weather conditions, material costs, and observations about Avery’s behavior.
June 14. Avery insists three stations can describe a field. Told her three people can barely describe a dinner.
July 2. First route display. Too confident. She dislikes showing uncertainty because she thinks users will blame her. Told her honest tools admit limits.
August 19. Bought parts with workshop account. Avery repaid in cash, exact amount plus tax because she is exhausting.
Avery laughed and cried on the same page.
The notebooks proved origin. They also showed that Windline had never been only her work.
Leila had sewn housings. Her grandmother had tested mounting points.
Customers had allowed experiments. Avery had written the code, designed the system, and built the central concept, but creation had happened inside a community.
That did not justify corporate erasure.
It clarified the kind of ownership she wanted.
Priya sat beside her reading a repair entry. “She wrote my name.”
Avery leaned over.
Priya asks why apprentices are paid less while doing essential work. Smart girl. Company should have answer better than tradition.
“She met me twice,” Priya whispered.
“She noticed everyone.”
Avery scanned the pages and sent them to counsel. Before closing the last notebook, she found an envelope taped inside the cover.
For Avery when proof is not the same as courage.
The envelope was empty.
Her grandmother had left space for an answer Avery would have to create herself.
