Chapter 11
Angela didn’t go to Blake first. That surprised him, though it shouldn’t have. He had spent too many days expecting his pain to create urgency in other people. Angela had taught him better by leaving, then taught him again by staying gone.
She summoned him to Vellum & Verdigris the next morning. Not the penthouse. Not Connor's hotel. Not a restaurant where anyone could pretend this was neutral ground. Her gallery.
Blake arrived ten minutes early and waited outside because the staff wouldn’t let him in until Angela approved it.
Once, he would have found that insulting.
Now he stood beneath the black awning in a dark suit and let passersby glance at him like gossip had given them partial ownership of his humiliation.
He’d earned worse.
Mya opened the door at exactly ten. "Mrs. Hunter will see you now."
Mrs. Hunter. The name cut differently when Angela had stopped wearing his ring.
She waited in the private sitting room upstairs, dressed in soft gray silk, her hair pulled back from her face, no jewelry except small diamond studs he had bought her in Venice their second year of marriage.
Connor King stood near the window, one hand in his pocket, expression unreadable.
Damon lounged in an armchair with the restless energy of a man trying to look casual while his life caught fire.
On the low table were Angela's phone, a small notepad, and a neat stack of printed screenshots. Blake saw Lily's name at the top of one page. Angela noticed him notice.
"I've been paying attention," she said.
The words weren’t triumphant. They were tired.
Blake stopped at the doorway.
Angela looked at him. "Come in."
His gaze moved to Connor before he could stop himself. Connor met it evenly, then looked away first, not in submission, but because the room belonged to Angela.
Angela's voice was calm. "Connor told me what Piper overheard."
Blake looked back at her sharply.
"She heard Lily say you were unconscious before you hit the bed," Angela continued. "That you couldn't have touched her if you wanted to."
Blake didn’t move. He had wanted those words more than breath. He had wanted someone, anyone, to tell Angela the thing he couldn’t prove. He had imagined relief as a flood, as oxygen, as mercy. He was wrong because Angela's face didn’t change.
She didn’t run to him. She didn’t cry his name. She didn’t soften into the version of reunion he hadn’t let himself hope for and still hoped for anyway.
She watched him absorb the possibility of innocence and made him understand that innocence wasn’t the same thing as absolution.
"Angela," he said.
"No."
The word wasn’t loud. It still stopped him.
"I'm glad if it means you didn't sleep with her," Angela said. "I'm glad for me, Blake. For my own sanity. But if you think this fixes us, walk back out before you disappoint me again."
His throat closed.
Connor's gaze dropped to the floor.
Damon muttered, "Hell of a way to open a meeting."
Angela looked at him.
Damon held up both hands. "Shutting up."
Blake forced himself to breathe. "It doesn't fix us."
"Good."
"It matters," he said quietly. "But it doesn't erase what I did before that night."
Angela stared at him long enough to test the sentence for cracks. He let her. He had spent years expecting her to trust his intent. Now she deserved to inspect every word.
Finally, she turned to Damon. "Tell him what you told me."
Damon sat forward, charm gone. "Lily and I slept together after the spring preview. It was casual. Consensual. I didn't know she had some deranged plan involving Blake, Angela, and a family dinner from hell."
Blake's jaw tightened despite himself.
Damon caught it. "Careful. You already tried blaming me once, and it bored me."
Angela's mouth twitched. It wasn’t a smile, but it was close
Damon continued, more soberly. "The timing is close enough that if she's pregnant, either of us could look possible from the outside.
That's why she chose the dinner. That's why she put her hand on her stomach in front of Dad and Mom.
She wanted the family machine to start moving before anyone asked the right question. "
"What question?" Blake asked.
Damon looked at him. "Which Hunter she actually slept with."
Silence settled over the room.
Angela tapped one finger on the screenshots.
"Lily has been using the gallery as a bridge into this family for a long time.
She used my events to reach you. She used my staff to look useful.
She used my name to make get in doors would never have opened for her otherwise.
And then she used the trust I gave her to make me look foolish in the business I built. "
Blake looked at the pages again.
Late texts. Soft concern. Lily inserting herself into matters that should have stayed private. It was proof of the access he gave her, of his failure to protect Angela.
Connor spoke then, controlled and quiet. "Piper is willing to repeat what she heard if Angela asks her to. But Lily knows how to perform. If she is cornered privately, she'll deny it. If she is cornered publicly, she may become careless."
Angela looked toward the window, where morning light lay clean over the gallery floor below. "She likes an audience."
"She needs one," Connor said.
Angela nodded.
Blake watched her and felt something like awe move through his grief. She was pale. Tired. Wounded in ways he had put there and Lily had exploited but she wasn’t broken. She was assembling herself into something sharper while every person in the room waited for her lead.
"What do you want to do?" Blake asked.
Angela looked back at him. "Expose her."
Damon let out a slow breath. "Good."
"But not for you," Angela said to Blake.
"I know."
"I mean it. If I help prove you didn't sleep with Lily, that is not me agreeing to come home.
That is not me forgiving the months you made me feel like I was inventing a threat.
That is not me forgetting your father's dining room or your silence before you learned how to use your voice to stand up. "
Blake took the hit because he’d earned it. "I know."
Her eyes narrowed slightly, as if she had expected him to defend himself and didn’t trust the absence yet.
Damon stood. "I'll take the paternity test."
Angela looked at him.
"If the baby is mine," Damon said, "I'll handle it. Not because I did something wrong by sleeping with her. I didn't. But because a child doesn't deserve to be a weapon in Lily's little social-climbing opera."
Blake looked at his brother. For the first time since the dinner, the rage didn’t rise first. Shame did.
"I shouldn't have put that on you."
Damon lifted a brow. "No, you shouldn't have."
"I was looking for a villain other than myself."
Blake kept his eyes on Damon because Angela shouldn’t have to receive every confession he made. Some guilt belonged elsewhere before it could become useful to her.
"You gave Lily one night," Blake said. "I gave her months of access and then acted offended when Angela noticed."
Damon nodded. "That's about right."
Connor's phone vibrated. He checked the screen. "Piper is downstairs."
Angela's gaze sharpened. "She came here?"
"She wanted to apologize in person for repeating gossip before she realized it mattered."
"She doesn't owe me an apology."
"She thinks she does."
Angela's expression softened in a way that made Blake ache. She still had gentleness. She had simply stopped giving it to people who used it badly.
"Bring her up," Angela said.
Piper King arrived in a pink cropped jacket, wide-legged trousers, and sunglasses perched on top of her head despite being indoors. She looked like a social media post that had wandered into a crime scene, except her eyes were worried and too young for the damage she had overheard.
"Hi," she said, then looked at Angela. "I am so sorry."
Angela stood. "For what?"
"For thinking Lily was just messy." Piper swallowed. "I mean, I knew she was dramatic, but lots of people are dramatic. I'm dramatic. This was different."
Connor moved to her side, not hovering, but there.
Angela crossed the room and took Piper's hand. "Thank you for telling the truth."
Piper's eyes filled. "She was laughing. She was laughing when she said you saw enough." Piper looked down, ashamed on behalf of someone else's cruelty. "I think that's what made me call Uncle Connor. People who regret hurting someone don't laugh like that."
Angela's fingers tightened around hers.
Blake had to look away.
There were wounds he had caused directly, and there were wounds he had made possible because he had invited Lily close enough to learn where Angela was soft.
Angela released Piper's hand and turned back to the room.
"She wants a stage," she said. "We'll give her one."
Blake met her gaze. For once, he didn’t ask what role he would play. He waited to be told.
