Chapter 14 What Mara Chose Alone

POV MARA QUINN

Tank came to her house with a pie he had clearly purchased.

"Bribery from a box," Mara said.

"Bonnie was closed."

"That is your first mistake."

He sat at the kitchen table and told the truth.

Deke had told him Rowan was Cole's when she was four.

Tank had kept quiet.

Mara listened.

When he finished, she asked, "Why?"

"Because you never asked me to tell him."

"I never asked you not to."

"I know."

"You all made my life into club business."

Tank winced.

"Yeah."

Mara stood and walked to the sink.

For years, she had believed the secret was hers.

Now she saw how many men had held pieces of it.

Deke.

Tank.

Maybe Boone.

People who thought silence was protection.

"I chose not to find Cole," she said. "That part is mine."

Tank nodded.

"I won't take it from you."

"But I did not choose for you to help Deke lie."

"No."

Mara turned.

"Tell Rowan yourself."

"I will."

"She gets to be angry."

"I know."

Mara almost told him to stop saying that.

Then she laughed.

Tank looked confused.

"Nothing."

When he left, Mara called Cole.

"Come over."

He arrived ten minutes later and stayed on the porch until she invited him in.

She respected that.

Mara put the old cut on the table between them.

Cole stared at the stitch holes.

"I cut the patch off the night you left."

"I remember the patch."

"Rowan asked what old lady meant."

Cole looked at her.

"What did you tell her?"

"Partner, not property."

"That's what it meant to me."

"Not always."

He nodded.

"No."

Mara sat.

"I want you to understand my choice."

Cole waited.

"I found out I was pregnant eleven days after you left. I called the clubhouse once. Deke answered. He said you were gone with Lena and did not want contact. I believed him."

Cole's face tightened.

"I am sorry."

"After Rowan was born, my mother wrote him. I didn't know. Years passed. I could have searched. I didn't."

She took a breath.

"I told myself I was protecting Rowan. Some of that was true. I was also protecting myself from giving you another chance to reject me."

Cole closed his eyes.

Mara continued.

"So no, I don't owe you an apology for raising her without you after you vanished. But I do own that I chose silence later, when I had more options."

Cole opened his eyes.

"Thank you for telling me."

"Are you angry?"

"Yes."

The honesty startled her.

"At me?"

"Some. Mostly at Deke. Mostly at myself. But yes, some at you."

Mara nodded.

"Good."

Cole looked surprised.

"I don't want a man who has to pretend every feeling is noble so I don't leave."

Something in his face broke open.

"I missed eighteen years."

"Yes."

"I hate that."

"You get to."

"But I don't get to make Rowan pay for it."

"No."

"Or you."

"No."

They sat.

Then Cole touched the old cut with one finger.

"Can I ask something?"

"Yes."

"Did you ever wear another man's old lady patch?"

Mara stared.

Cole looked embarrassed.

"That was a stupid question."

"No."

He nodded.

Mara added, "I dated."

"I assumed."

"Did you?"

"Yes."

"Serious?"

"Once. Three years. Her name was Avery. We ended because she wanted marriage and I kept treating commitment like a test I might fail."

Mara absorbed that.

"Do you still?"

Cole looked at her.

"No."

The answer sat quietly between them.

Mara did not kiss him.

She wanted to.

That was enough for one night.

POV COLE MERCER

Avery called from Tucson to discuss the shop sale rumor.

When Cole told her he might stay in Ironvale, she was quiet.

"Because of Mara?"

"Partly."

"Be careful not to make a woman into your redemption project."

Cole sat straighter.

"I won't."

"You did that to me once, in reverse."

"I know."

Avery sighed.

"Then maybe you learned something."

After the call, Cole wrote her an apology he had owed for three years.

He sent it without asking for an answer.
