Chapter 16 Fifty Feet

POV COLE MERCER

Cole moved out of Deke's house the next morning.

Not because Mara asked.

Because the house had become an excuse to stand inside his father's choices and call them inheritance.

He rented a room above the hardware store.

Then he went to the garage and worked.

He did not call Mara.

He did not call Rowan.

He called Susan Bell and asked what it would take to remove Mara's personal exposure from the lien.

At noon he called his manager in Tucson.

"I want to sell my stake."

Silence.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

"Because of the garage?"

"Partly."

"Because of Mara?"

Cole looked at Deke's old desk.

"No. Because I don't want two lives I can run between whenever one hurts."

The sale would cover the tax lien and leave enough for remediation if the price held.

It would also cost him the business he had spent fifteen years building.

Cole did not mistake sacrifice for atonement.

Money could save a garage.

It could not buy nineteen years.

At three, Tank came in.

"Mara won't answer me."

"She'll answer when she wants."

"Rowan?"

"Same."

Tank sat.

"I should've told you."

Cole kept sorting grant documents.

"Yes."

"You gonna hit me?"

"No."

"Would understand."

"That's not repair."

Tank looked down.

Cole finally sat across from him.

"You need to do something useful with what you did."

"What?"

"Help us formalize the youth program. Put your name on the background check. Teach. Show up."

Tank nodded.

"Okay."

Cole handed him the application packet.

"Start with page one."

Tank stared.

"Punishment."

"Maintenance."

POV MARA QUINN

For three days, Mara did not go to Mercer Garage.

She worked at her shop.

She ate dinner with Rowan.

She paid bills.

She scheduled a mammogram she had postponed twice because ordinary health refused to wait for old heartbreak.

On Thursday, Bonnie came by with no cobbler.

"Good," Mara said. "We are improving."

Bonnie sat.

"You don't have to forgive him."

"I know."

"You also don't have to refuse because everyone remembers what he did."

Mara looked at her.

"Careful."

"I'm not pushing."

"You are shaped like pushing."

Bonnie smiled.

Then her face softened.

"I watched you build a life out of what was left. Sometimes I think we all got so proud of you for surviving that we forgot survival isn't a marriage vow."

Mara stared at the half-finished motorcycle seat.

"What does that mean?"

"It means if you want him, wanting doesn't erase what you built without him."

Mara looked toward the window.

Cole had not crossed the street once.

No flowers.

No apology notes.

No dramatic rain.

He had respected the boundary she had not even spoken.

That mattered.

Rowan came in after class.

"He's selling Arizona."

Mara turned.

"What?"

"He told me today."

"He called you?"

"I called him."

Mara waited.

Rowan set down her backpack.

"I was angry. I told him he was a coward for seeing me and leaving."

Mara's heart tightened.

"What did he say?"

"That I was right."

"Of course."

"Then I asked if he wanted to know me anyway."

Mara sat.

"And?"

"He said yes. But he said I don't owe him closeness to prove he's sorry."

Rowan's eyes filled.

"I think I want him in my life."

Mara reached for her hand.

"Then you get to."

"Even if you don't?"

"Especially."

Rowan squeezed.

Mara looked across the street again.

The garage door was open.

Cole worked alone under Bay Two lights.

He did not look up.

For the first time since the slap, Mara wondered what forgiveness might require from her rather than from him.

The question frightened her because it could not be answered by evidence alone.

POV COLE MERCER

Cole attended a counseling appointment by video in the hardware store room.

He told the therapist about the window.

About the baby.

About driving away.

The therapist did not call him a monster.

That was almost disappointing.

Instead she asked, "What would staying look like now?"

Cole looked at the cheap room around him.

"Not making anybody come find me."

"Start there."

So he did.
