Julia

Westport, Connecticut

It feels so strange to have Casey in the lake house with me. In my bed with me.

I drag my fingers down his bare chest, and he groans. “That feels good.” He rolls onto his side and ushers me down onto my back. “When did you say your parents are coming back?”

“Tomorrow. My dad is accepting some award on behalf of his company.” No one has a clue how badly it sucks to have one parent who’s a shrink and another who runs one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.

They are always watching my every move and every word.

Worse, they control everything and everyone. I cannot wait to be rid of them.

“I’m just glad they’re gone.” He kisses my throat, then trails those amazing lips down to my breast. I moan. “Wait. Wait.” I pull his amazing mouth from my boob. “There’s something we need to talk about.”

“Make it fast, I need to do something with this.” He grinds his hard erection into my pelvis.

I brace myself. This is a big favor to ask of him, and I have no idea how he will react.

We’ve been sneaking around together all these years waiting for all my graduations to be over.

First was those last couple of weeks of high school, then college, grad school, and finally my PhD graduation ceremony, which is only two weeks away.

It’s all behind me now. My parents and their fucking lawyers can no longer withhold my trust fund.

I am nearly twenty-eight years old and about to be a billionairess.

I smile just thinking about it. I can do anything I want. Go anywhere I want. No more hoops to jump through.

“What are you smiling about? I thought you had to tell me something.”

“I was just thinking about my money.” I stare into his eyes. “Our money. Our future.”

He grins at me. “Can’t wait.”

My smile fades. “But they will always try to interfere. Until the day they die, they will be nagging at me. Trying to make trouble for us. Dragging the lawyers into it.”

He frowns. “Your parents?”

I nod. “My father is already laying out ground rules for the trust transfer. He’s even taken steps to ensure the company is never mine to oversee. I swear, I wouldn’t put it past him to try and hold things up with the trust if he gets so much as a whiff of our plans.”

Fury tightens Casey’s face. “Then we need to make sure they can’t interfere.”

Delight flutters through me. “You would do that?”

“Damn straight. I have big plans too. We are going places, baby.”

“Then you’ll take care of it.” I need to hear him say the words.

“I will take care of it, and everyone will believe it was an accident. I know a hundred ways.”

His words make me breathless. “When?”

He shrugs. “Might as well let them see your big day when you become Dr. Julia, right?”

“Right.” Oh my God. My whole body is tingling with excitement. “That’s the last day they can control our lives.”

“Damn straight.” He kisses me hard. “Because they will be dead, and you will be mine.”

When we finally come up for air, I say, “I went by that house again.”

He lifts his head, his lips deserting my belly button. “What house?”

“The one where you left her. On Sixty-Second, between Madison and Fifth.”

“You should forget about her.” He nips my skin.

I can’t forget about her. I dream about her. I think of all the things Casey said would happen to her. It excites me to play it out in my head. Poor Wendy. I wish I could see her now.

“I will forget her. I promise.” In time. When I’m far away from here and living my best life.

I like that I found someone who loves me and who takes care of my problems. I never have to worry about any of that ever again. Casey will do whatever I ask.

We make love again and again. I’m celebrating. I’m going to be free from all of it . . . finally.
