Blue Christmas Service Day, National Coquito Day, Winter Solsitice
DECEMBER 21ST
Lainey
I wondered how I would handle our courtship today, knowing it’s the anniversary of your mom’s death and it would be a tough day for you. But sometimes the answer really is in these wonderfully strange holidays.
Today is Blue Christmas Service Day. It’s for those who are struggling with grief and joy during the Christmas season. I emailed you a list of churches holding services today. I’m unsure if this is something that will bring you comfort or not, but maybe it could help shoulder the grief. And if you need a real shoulder, I’m here.
A few hours later…
Ben
I went to one of the services, and it was exactly what I didn’t know I needed. Thank you, Lainey.
Lainey
You’re welcome.
Another couple hours later…
Ben
Lainey…I don’t know what to say. You’ve blown me away today.
Lainey
You don’t have to say anything.
Ben
Yes, I do. You took the hardest day of my life and made it beautiful. Walking into Red Poppy took my breath away. The twinkle lights. The Christmas trees. The lighted snowflakes and icicles. The angel hanging over my mom’s spot… made me cry like a fucking baby.
It’s absolutely enchanting, Lainey. It’s like walking into a Winter Wonderland.
Lainey
Wait until the snowmaker machine shows up. Happy Winter Solstice!
Ben
What? Really?
Lainey
Don’t worry, I have people coming to clean up after you close.
Oh and also, Happy National Coquito Day!
Ben
That’s why Jan suggested I create a Coquito martini?
Lainey
We agreed the drink would pair perfectly with the Winter Solstice theme.
Ben
It’s hard to complain about you and Jan planning events without my knowledge when they’re this amazing. I have a feeling once tonight’s pictures hit the internet, Langford Event Services will be in high demand.
Pause.
Lainey
I didn’t do this for the exposure.
Ben
I know.
But I’m going to make damn sure everyone knows who made this happen.
Because you deserve it.
Lainey
Thank you, but all I want is for you to have a good night, Ben.
Ben
I will.
Pause.
Ben
Thank you for courting me, Lainey.
Lainey
It’s been my pleasure. Truly.
