BLAKE

I watch James Preston’s daughter hurry toward the house, her shoulders hunched, her auburn ponytail swinging back and forth.

She glances back at me, as though afraid I’m going to put my foot on the gas and leave.

No, sweet girl. I’m not going anywhere.

I drag my hand down over my mouth and blow out a breath. Am I making a huge mistake by doing this? She’s James Preston’s daughter, after all.

My feelings about the death of my best friend are mixed.

I hate that we’d never reconciled, but with his passing goes the only other person who knew the truth, and there’s some relief in that.

I’d never fully trusted that James wouldn’t let his tongue run away on him one day…

it wasn’t as though he hadn’t done it before.

I can hardly believe his daughter has grown into this beauty.

She’d been a gawky little thing when she was younger.

Now she’s all long limbs and curves. She’d probably thought her black dress would be demure when she picked it out, something appropriate for her father’s funeral, but instead she looks like a pin-up model from the forties, all curves with a tiny waist.

Fuck, my cock hardens just by watching her ass wiggle as she walks away. She disappears down the side of the property, and I press the heel of my hand against my burgeoning erection, willing it to go down.

I’d felt something pass between us when I’d taken her hand. Her pale blue eyes had lit up, her eyelashes fluttering, a blush rising to her creamy skin. It’s such beautiful skin, too. Clear except for the spattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose.

I grit my teeth at the thought of the boy she’s going to now.

What kind of man allows a young woman to go to her father’s funeral alone?

I want to beat the living shit out of him, teach him a lesson, but she won’t like that.

She’d made her excuses for him, though I’d been able to tell she’d been embarrassed.

It had done something to my guts knowing she’d been self-conscious at the fact the man in her life didn’t care enough to want to be at her side.

I’ve got no qualms in showing the little shit what I think about him when she won’t find out about it, but that moment isn’t now.

Opening the glove compartment, I take out my cell phone. I had no reason to take it in the church with me as I rarely use it. I swipe the screen and hit the call button.

Levi answers, already sounding bored. “Yeah?”

“You need to get the place ready,” I tell him.

“What for?”

“I’m bringing the girl back.”

He hesitates. “Is that a good idea?”

I remember the curve of her ass as she walked away, and my cock jerks again.

“Definitely.”
