Interlude Because We All Need a Minute to Breathe
INTERLUDE
Because We All Need a Minute to Breathe
Hi, folks, Eleanor again.
I mean, I’ve been here the whole time, obvi, but I thought it was time for you and me to have a little chat. Because some of you might need a refresher on where we are and a clue to where we’re going.
I know I do.
Did I mention that I’m not a very good detective? No? Well, I’m not. You’ve probably noticed that by now.
So, where are we?
Trapped in some mirror version of my life with two dead bodies in a resort owned by the Giuseppes, a family that’s tried to kill me more than once.
And I’ve been lured somewhere again. This time by Guy and Connor, who cooked up some harebrained scheme to catch Marta by using me, Harper, Oliver, and themselves as bait.
What could go wrong?
Those idiots.
ANYWAY, Guy paid for his stupidity with his life. Which I guess he deserved because he was part of their evil plans going all the way back to Italy.
So it’s looking like Marta killed Brian and Guy.
That’s the simple explanation.
But remember back there where I said it was never the simple explanation? And remember also when I said things come in threes? Like bodies?
Plus, we’re not even in the third act. So I’ve only uncovered the first layer of the onion I’m currently peeling, and there are going to be a lot of tears before I get to the middle of it.
Okay, that was a bad metaphor, but you get the idea.
But I promised you a hint so—
Here are three things that don’t make sense to me yet:
Guy and Connor setting a trap for Marta by luring me, Harper, Oliver, and Inspector Tucci to the Bahamas makes a certain kind of messed-up Connor sense.
Like how idiots might use humans for shark bait instead of chum.
Because right now, we’re the chum. But why is Sandrine here?
Ravi? Stefano? Cathy? Why is there still a plausible list of suspects who’d want to kill me?
If I were Marta, I’d hightail it for the hills the minute Guy showed up, I don’t care how difficult it might be.
I certainly wouldn’t hang around and wait for him to expose me or buy some stupid story about how he wanted to help me escape with new papers.
So is Marta even at this resort? And if she isn’t, why did Guy and Connor go through with their plan?
Because I’m not buying that Guy hadn’t identified her yet for one minute.
Why would Brian have a crazy wall about me?
If he was working with Guy and the plan was to expose Marta, I shouldn’t have had anything to do with him.
And while I might’ve said Guy put that wall up after Brian died to divert suspicion, that’s not a Guy kind of thing to do.
It’s too subtle for him. So either the wall is real—in which case, yikes—or it’s fake, and it was put there by someone else.
How are these things clues, you might be wondering? It’ll all become clear in time.
You can bookmark this page and come back to it later. And yes, it’s okay to turn down the corner of a book you own. That’s right. I said it. But if you’re reading electronically, then just use that bookmark function thing.
Okay, interlude over.
Let’s get back to it.
Because the sixth sequence is always the most interesting one, in my view.
