Chapter 46

Quinn

I looked up at the FBI agent as he offered me a small cup of coffee. Taking it with both hands, I asked, “Is Zane going to be okay?”

“The doctors say your friend will live. Now, I need you to tell me exactly what happened out there today.”

Looking down at the dark brown liquid, I sighed heavily. What I said could make or break the entire plan. If I slipped up, not only would my boys go away for life, but so would I. Forcing my jaw to tremble, I took a deep breath. “Sorry. I’m a little shaken.”

“That’s understandable. Take your time.”

I twirled a strand of hair between my fingers. “I got evicted a little while ago, and I started dating one of the three guys.” I hesitated. I didn’t want any of the guys to feel insulted if I chose one or the other, but it wouldn’t be good if the agent knew I was banging all three of them. That was most definitely not his business. “I’m dating Zane. The man who was shot.” He was the best choice; after all, I was living in his house.

The agent nodded, encouraging me to continue.

“His friend, Keith, rents a storage unit. He let me use it to store some of my crap until I can figure out what to do with it.” Sighing, I took a sip of the coffee and cringed; there was nowhere near enough sugar in it. “I put together a few boxes today, and the guys were nice enough to help me. I smelled something...” Tears began to blur my sight. I hoped he assumed it was because I was overwhelmed. “I thought it was a dead animal, so I called the man who owns the units. He cut the lock and…” A sob broke free. Every part of my consciousness was screaming for me to tell the truth. I was a killer.

The agent sighed, “Miss McBane, do you know who the man in the unit was?”

I shook my head, wiping my nose.

“His name was Officer Rick Moralles. Ring any bells?”

I stared into the distance, trying to get the tears to stop. “I know that name. That man shot my fiancé.”

“Yes, he mistook a video game controller for a weapon.”

“I didn’t know it was him,” I whispered. “I couldn’t tell.”

“I don’t doubt it. He had to have been there for a few days. What I find ironic is that almost every victim had a connection to your boyfriend and his two friends. And Moralles had a connection to you.”

My jaw dropped, and I could feel my face getting red. “I didn’t kill Moralles. And the guys didn’t kill anyone, either! They wouldn’t do that!”

The agent sighed, “Well, from what we found in the storage unit, all the evidence seems to point to Detective Chin. We also found evidence suggesting that he planned on framing your friends.”

I nodded, unsure of what to say.

Getting to his feet, the agent held out his hand. “You’re free to go, for now, Miss McBane. We may need to contact you later about the case, and there is a good chance you may need to appear as a witness in court.”

Sliding out of the uncomfortable chair, I shook the agent’s hand. “Thank you.” I rushed out of the room the moment he opened the door. Keith and Taven were in the waiting area. We shared a look, all in silent agreement that we needed to visit Zane. And then we could breathe a gigantic sigh of relief.
