38. Cody
Cody
My heart hammers in my chest as we pull out of the driveway and take a right. I can barely hear anything over the whooshing of my blood pumping in my ears.
“You’re going to be ok, baby,” I whisper, knowing Sloan can hear me. I know there are over a dozen people listening, but I don’t care one bit.
“I'm scared. I'm so freaking scared, Cody,” she whimpers. “How am I supposed to act like everything is normal?”
“Pick up your phone and pretend you’re talking on it.”
“He’s going to see me crying. I'm going to blow this.” She chokes on a sob and it’s like someone shoved a knife straight through my chest.
“Turn your back to the window and pace around the living room. You’ve always paced when you’re on the phone.”
“Ok. I'm pacing.” She blows out a long breath and I know she’s trying to keep the tears at bay.
“We’re pulling into Wheeler’s driveway. I’ll be there soon.”
“Please hurry.”
“He’s out of the car. He’s eying the place, trying to figure out how to get in,” Mason murmurs, making my stomach sink.
“Cody,” she whispers, her breathing turning ragged.
“I'm coming, baby. I’ll be there before he gets in.” I push the door open and climb out of Jax’s SUV. I take off at a run to the backyard.
“Slow down, Cody. He’s still examining the place. He doesn’t know how to get over the gate. If you rush, you’re going to make a careless mistake and then all of this will be for nothing,” Wes murmurs, trying to be the voice of reason.
“I can’t let anything happen to her, Dad.”
“Yeah, I'm more worried about you at this point.”
“Holy crap,” Uncle Linc draws out the words, shock evident in his tone. “Did you see him scale that fence? He was faster than Mason! He’s like a freaking spider monkey!”
“Nothing will ever stand between a man and the woman he loves.” I can hear the smile in Dad’s voice and it makes me smile too.
“Truth,” Jax mumbles.
I frown as I think about my brother. He’s never been in love with anyone. What does he know about it?
“I'm in the backyard. I'm about to open the door, don’t freak out. I'm staying on the ground so Jude doesn’t see me.” I murmur as I drop to a crouching position and slowly move through the backyard.
“Jude’s over the gate,” Maddox whispers.
“Dang, how did you get over this thing?” Jax grunts before I hear a loud “Oafffff.” In my ear.
“Jax?” Dad growls.
“Doing great, Pops. Just landed a little hard on my… everything. Holy crap, that’s going to hurt tomorrow.” He crawls across the backyard and into the living room.
“Both of you get into the hall bathroom, I don’t want Jude to see you,” Mason orders.
“He’s at the house. He’s trying to decide how to come in. Everyone stay down.” I'm not sure who that guy is, but he sounds tough and scary.
“We’re right here for you, baby. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
