Chapter 3

CALLIE

Iwoke at six because I always woke at six, and for one moment — the particular moment before the body catches up with the mind — I didn't know where I was.

Then the light came through the shutters in the wrong direction. The sheets were the wrong thread count — better than mine, which I noted without pleasure. And somewhere below the window, jasmine was insisting on itself through the early-morning air.

I knew exactly where I was.

I lay there for forty-five seconds. Then I got up.

The room they'd given me was generous by any hotel standard and slightly too generous by the standard of someone who understood what it meant when a man wanted you to feel accommodated.

East wing, upper corridor, high ceilings, a sitting area I had no intention of using, and a bathroom with a marble soaking tub that I absolutely had used, because I was furious about my situation, not an idiot.

The view was the Athens hillside going amber in the early light, the city below still blurred, the Parthenon in the middle distance doing what the Parthenon always did — making everything around it feel temporary.

I stood at the window with my coffee — my travel bag contained a compact pour-over kit and a bag of the Ethiopian single-origin I ordered from a roaster in Wicker Park, because I had learned from experience that institutional coffee was a form of surrender — and conducted a quick assessment of my situation.

I was standing in a room in a man's house that had been arranged for me. In a house I hadn't chosen to enter. In a city I hadn't chosen. With three weeks blocked on my calendar and a legal document determining my near future.

The assessment took about thirty seconds.

Then I got dressed, picked up my portfolio, and went to find the business library.

The estate was larger inside than it appeared from the courtyard — either excellent architectural work or a deliberate choice, probably both.

The eastern corridor ran past six closed doors and opened into a gallery hallway I hadn't seen the night before: long, high-ceilinged, hung with portraits that moved in chronological order from oil paint to photograph.

Drakos men. All of them.

They all had the same jaw.

I kept walking.

The library, according to the floor plan I'd studied before leaving Chicago, was on the ground floor of the west wing — the section connecting the private residence to what the architectural brief (I had obtained an architectural brief, because I had lawyers and also common sense) described as "administrative offices.

" I had marked it because I intended to work while I was here.

Three weeks was not a vacation. Three weeks was an enforced relocation, and enforced relocations were still work periods if you organized them correctly.

I found the west wing corridor without difficulty. Found the door at the end of it. Tried the handle.

Locked.

I turned back toward the main house.

A woman was coming down the corridor — small, middle-aged, carrying a tray with the ease of someone who had walked this corridor for a long time. She registered me with a warm smile that contained no visible surprise.

"Good morning. You must be Kyria Vasilakis." Her English was accented and precise. "I'm Maria. Can I help you find something?"

"The business library."

"Of course — that wing requires the master key, I'm afraid. I can ask Kostas to arrange access, if you'd like to leave him a note?"

I looked at her. The smile was genuine. The framing — if you'd like to leave him a note — was the specific framing of someone delivering a polite wall with professional warmth rather than obvious management.

"Thank you," I said. "I'd appreciate that."

"Of course. Breakfast is in the main dining room or the courtyard, whichever you prefer. The courtyard is lovely this time of morning." She tilted her head. "And if there's anything at all you need for your room—"

"There is one thing." I'd been thinking about it since I woke up. "I'd like a different room."

A brief pause. "Is something wrong with the current room?"

"It's beautiful. I'd prefer the corner room in the north wing."

Another pause. Then: "The north wing is—"

"I noticed it on the walk in yesterday. Corner room, second floor, north-facing windows. It looks out over the entrance rather than the hillside." I met her eyes steadily. "I work better with a street-facing view. Habit."

Partially true. The other part was that the north-wing corner room was not the room he had arranged for me, and I was not spending three weeks in a space someone else had selected.

Maria's expression remained warm. "I'll let Kostas know. I'm sure it can be arranged."

"I'd be happy to speak with Kostas directly."

"He'll find you at breakfast, I'm certain." She gestured toward the main doors. "The courtyard's just through there."

She waited, pleasantly, and said nothing else.

I recognized excellent household management when I was being managed by it. I said thank you and went to the courtyard.

The courtyard in the morning was quieter and more honest than the version I'd arrived to yesterday.

The columns ran gold where the early light caught them.

The mosaic tile was cool underfoot — blue and white and terracotta, a maritime pattern, old enough to mean something, maintained well enough that they knew it meant something.

The jasmine had moved into its morning phase: still present, less insistent.

A table was set under the lemon trees: coffee service, bread, honey, a plate of fruit that looked like it had been assembled by someone who genuinely cared what fruit looked like. Either the standard breakfast or someone's idea of an impression.

I sat down, poured coffee, and opened my portfolio to the contracts section.

I was fifteen minutes into the Marchetti file when I became aware of being watched.

Not a staff member. The quality was different — more deliberate, more sustained.

I finished the note I was writing before I looked up.

He was on the upper terrace off the main house. Second floor, stone balustrade, a clean line of sight down to the courtyard. Dark jacket, no tie, coffee in one hand. He'd been there long enough to have finished half of it.

He wasn't pretending not to watch. He was watching with the specific quality of a man who had decided watching was a reasonable thing to do and saw no need to conceal it.

I looked back at him without changing my expression.

He didn't look away.

Neither did I.

Four seconds. Five. We simply looked at each other across the distance of the courtyard, and the morning did what it was doing regardless: light moving through the columns, jasmine on the air, the city existing below the hill.

Then he lifted his coffee in something that was not a toast and not a greeting and not nothing.

I looked back down at the Marchetti file.

Kostas arrived at twenty past eight. Tall, somewhere past fifty, with the careful stillness of a man who had spent decades managing a household and a complicated employer simultaneously. He introduced himself, offered a handshake, told me the north-wing room would be ready by this afternoon.

"The business library," I said. "I'd like access this afternoon."

"I'll need to confirm the arrangements with Kyrios Drakos."

"When can you confirm?"

"This morning, most likely."

"I'd appreciate that." I folded my hands on the portfolio. "I have client files that need attention regardless of the current arrangement. I'd prefer a dedicated workspace over my room. If the library isn't possible, I'll need an alternative."

He nodded with the ease of a man who had been told many things and processed all of them through the same professional calm. "I'll raise it directly."

"Thank you." He started to go. I said, without particular inflection: "He was watching from the terrace this morning."

A pause. Something in Kostas's expression that wasn't quite a smile and wasn't quite an acknowledgment. "The terrace is one of his preferred spots."

"Is it." I looked back at my coffee. "Good to know."

Access to the business library was available nine to six, provided the administrative offices weren't in active use. A reading room adjacent to the library, with a separate entrance, would be available without restriction.

I accepted this without visible reaction and went to take a walking circuit of the grounds.

The geography of the estate was a contract, once you knew how to read it.

Where I could go without asking and where I'd be politely redirected — it was all there, written in open doors and locked ones.

The wine cellar was open. The indoor pool was available at all hours.

The formal gardens, the kitchen garden with its November herbs still holding on, the east-wing sitting rooms — open.

Offered. Arranged with the specific understanding that beauty was a kind of management.

The business library: by appointment.

The administrative wing: locked.

The room he'd selected for me: my initial assignment, until I redirected it.

He thought he was dealing with someone who could be softened by comfort.

I stood in the formal garden, hand on the warm stone of a bench, and felt something cold and clear settle through me.

He was going to need a new theory.

I sat down and opened the Marchetti file.

He appeared at three.

I didn't hear him coming — he'd taken the flagstone path along the wall rather than the gravel — and then he was simply there, setting a glass of water on the bench beside me without asking, sitting at the other end of it with the ease of a man who found this garden entirely unremarkable regardless of who else was in it.

I noted this without looking up.

"The provenance gap," I said, because I'd been thinking about it since morning, "runs from 1938 to 1946. Which means the family either sold under duress or the collection was seized. Neither reading is good for the current owners. One of them is significantly worse."

A beat.

"Good morning," Niko said.

"Good afternoon."

"You've been working since breakfast."

"I've been working since six." I turned a page. "The reading room is acceptable. I'll need a printer."

"I'll have it connected."

"Thank you." I set the file down and looked at him properly for the first time.

He was considerably more than the photograph had suggested.

The photograph had made him look like ease personified.

Up close, in the afternoon light, the ease was real but it came with something else — a quality of attention that had nothing casual about it, dark eyes that were doing several things at once and making it look effortless, a physical presence that filled the space around him in a way that was not aggression but was definitely intention.

He was very good-looking in the specific way of men who have always known it and have decided the more interesting thing is to use it rather than rely on it.

It was annoying, frankly.

"The north wing," he said.

"The east wing faces the wrong direction."

"You've been here one night."

"I know which direction I sleep."

Something moved through his expression — not quite amusement, not quite respect, the midpoint between them. The expression of someone who had prepared for resistance and was recalibrating because the resistance wasn't what they'd expected.

"The library," he said.

"Nine to six is workable. I'll need earlier access on days when your offices are scheduled. My clients don't keep Athens hours."

"I can arrange flexibility."

"Good." I picked up the file. "The water's warm."

He glanced at the glass.

"I'll have them bring ice." He didn't move to leave. "Dinner is at eight."

"You told me nine last night."

A pause. "I changed it."

"I'll be there at eight." I turned a page.

He stood. His footsteps moved back across the flagstone toward the house — unhurried, without any particular implication.

I did not watch him go.

I looked down at the Marchetti file, at the ownership gap that ran from 1938 to 1946, at the specific silence in a record that should not have been silent.

I told myself that tracking exactly how far away he was by the sound of his footsteps was professional attentiveness and nothing more.

I was a very good liar when I needed to be.

My thumb found the scar on my wrist.

I let it rest there for a moment. Then I kept reading.
