CALLIE

The market was not on the itinerary.

The itinerary had been: morning meeting at the Piraeus office, thirty minutes of debrief in the car back, then the afternoon at the estate where I had three hours blocked for the Castellano pre-call preparation and he had two back-to-back calls with the Thessaloniki shipping arm.

We were on schedule. The meeting had ended twelve minutes early.

We were in the car going back up through the city when I saw it — a covered market at the end of a side street, the kind that had clearly been there since before the surrounding neighborhood had finished deciding what it wanted to be.

Vegetable bins and canvas awnings and the particular midmorning quality of commerce that was not performing itself for anyone.

"Stop here," I said.

The driver looked at Niko. Niko looked at me.

"We have —"

"Forty-seven minutes before your first call." I was already looking at the market. "I want to see what they have."

A pause. "You want to stop at the la?ki."

"I import Greek produce for a living. Yes, I want to stop at the la?ki."

He said something in Greek to the driver — not the business Greek, something shorter and drier, with the tone of a man conceding a point while preserving the appearance of not having conceded it. The car pulled over.

"Twenty minutes," he said.

"Sure," I said.

We were there for fifty.

The market had the specific smell I associated, at a cellular level, with everything I had built Vasilakis Holdings to be: olive oil and stone fruit and fresh herbs and the underlying mineral note of good soil, all of it cut with the sharper edge of fish from the far stall and the yeast warmth of the bread from the bakery truck parked on the corner.

I stood at the entrance for a moment and breathed it and felt something in my chest go simply right, the way things went right when you were in the presence of something you understood completely.

He stood beside me.

"You're going to be difficult about this," he said.

"I'm going to be thorough about this. Those are different things."

He made a sound that was not quite disagreement and not quite agreement, and I walked into the market, and after a moment he followed.

The first thing I noticed was his Greek.

I had been listening to his Greek for five months — in the estate, in meetings, on the phone at all hours, at the family dinner, on the yacht.

I knew the business register: precise, weighted, the specific authority of a man who understood that every syllable in a professional context was a move.

I knew the social register: warmer, expansive, the performance of ease I had long since identified as performance.

I knew the private register — the one that appeared in the study and the gallery and the bathroom and the yacht cabin in the dark — which was quieter than both, stripped down, the voice that wasn't building anything.

This was a fourth one I hadn't heard.

He greeted the first vendor — an older man with a produce stall, the kind of dark-leathery-forearm tan that came from forty years outdoors — and his Greek shifted into something I didn't have a category for.

Looser. Warmer. With diminutives and the specific register of two people who had been greeting each other for years and had long since settled into the shorthand of established affection.

The older man laughed at something Niko said.

Niko's hand on his shoulder — brief, genuine.

They talked for two minutes about the tomatoes and then about something else, and the older man looked at me and said something and Niko said something back with the quality of a man providing accurate information he was mildly amused by, and the vendor said ah in a specific way that meant he had understood everything, and I pretended not to have followed any of it.

"What did he say," I said, when we moved on.

"That you were too serious for a Tuesday."

"And you said?"

"That you were always serious but that it was worth it."

I looked at him.

He was looking at the next stall. His expression was that of a man who has said something true and is not going to elaborate on it.

I looked at the next stall.

He knew almost everyone.

Not in the way of a man working a room — I knew what that looked like, and this was not that.

He knew them the way you knew the people who had always been in a place that was yours: the produce man, the cheese woman with the small stall in the back who called him Nikáki — a diminutive so familiar it had to have started before he was old enough to object to it — the honey vendor who had apparently been in some dispute with his neighbor that Niko had an opinion about.

I drifted through it and watched him.

This was the thing I had not been prepared for.

I had been prepared for the king and for the businessman and for the man in the dark study with the whiskey and the maps and the specific weight of three words said quietly in amber light.

I had not been prepared for the man who knew the cheese woman's name and the honey vendor's ongoing dispute and the produce man's opinion about the Tuesday tomatoes.

The version of him that existed inside strategy I had learned to navigate. The version that existed outside it was standing in front of a fig display telling me something about the Smyrna variety that he had a genuine opinion about, and I was in considerably more trouble than I had appreciated.

"These ones," he said, pointing.

"The Smyrna."

"The Smyrna are better in October but the season runs long if it's been a warm autumn. This year was warm." He picked one up, turned it over. "Soft at the stem. That's what you're looking for."

"I know how to select a fig."

"You know how to import them. That's a desk relationship."

I looked at him. He looked at me. The private version of the smile — the one that wasn't performing itself for anyone, that appeared when he was genuinely amused and had stopped bothering to contain it.

"Give me the fig," I said.

He handed it over. It was perfect. I put it in the bag I had acquired somewhere in the previous twenty minutes without consciously deciding to acquire a bag, and moved to the next stall.

That bag had been the first one. Then there was a second bag — for the bread and the cheese, because those didn't go with the produce. Then there was the small parcel of dried herbs from a stall near the back, wrapped in paper, which I handed to him because I had run out of hands.

He took it without comment. Then he took the produce bag also, because it was getting unwieldy and he had noticed this before I said anything. He held it with the slight bemusement of a man who had carried a great many things in his life and this was a new category.

"You're doing this on purpose," he said.

"I'm selecting ingredients."

"You've selected enough ingredients for four days."

"I'm looking at the olive oil."

He made the sound again — the not-quite-disagreement — and followed me to the olive oil stall.

The woman running it was in her sixties and had three varieties open for tasting on a small wooden board.

I worked through them with the specific attention of a woman whose import arm was built on exactly this kind of sourcing decision: the first buttery and mild, good for finishing; the second peppery, Koroneiki olives, the kind that would stand up to heat; the third something I hadn't encountered before, a cooperative label I didn't recognize, with a grassy sharpness and an almost floral note underneath.

"This one," I said. "What cooperative?"

The woman told me. I asked two more questions, got out my phone, and made a note. She looked at me with the expression of someone who had just upgraded their assessment of who they were talking to. She said something to Niko.

"She wants to know if you're a buyer," he said.

"Potentially." I looked at the label. "Tell her I'll follow up through the import arm. Tell her I'm looking for a regional exclusive on the American luxury market."

He told her. Her expression shifted — the expression of someone who had been having a Tuesday and had just had a different kind of Tuesday arrive. She said something at length.

"She says she'll want to speak to her cousin at the cooperative first. And she wants your card."

I gave her my card. She gave me a bottle of the oil, wrapped in paper, which Niko added to the growing collection.

He was now carrying three bags and a small parcel and a bottle of olive oil.

I looked at him.

He looked back at me with the expression of a man who had walked into something he had categorized incorrectly and had too much dignity to acknowledge this out loud.

"You're welcome," I said.

"For what."

"The business contact."

"Ah," he said. "That's what this is."

"That's always what this is."

He didn't smile exactly. The corner of his mouth moved in the specific way it moved when he was deciding whether to let the smile be visible, and then he looked away, and I looked away, and we kept walking.

The honey vendor was at the far end of the market, past the fish stall, in a corner that smelled of beeswax and thyme honey.

He was in his late twenties, with the open-faced warmth of someone who had decided the market was a social occasion and conducted himself accordingly.

He and Niko argued briefly about the ongoing dispute — I gathered that Niko's position was wrong and the honey vendor's position was correct and Niko was aware of this but had committed too early to reverse it gracefully.

Then the vendor looked at me.

"Kalimera," he said, with the specific warmth of a man who had suddenly found the market considerably more interesting. He said something else — to Niko, but looking at me, the particular register of a compliment delivered through a third party as a courtesy.

"He says you have your husband's full attention and he's envious of both the cause and the effect," Niko said.

"That's very smooth."

"He practices." Something dry in Niko's voice suggested this was accurate.

The vendor said something else, directly to me this time, slower — trying his English, which was accented and warm and directed at me with a focused quality that was, in its way, charming.

Niko stepped in close.

Not fast. Not with any visible tension. He simply closed the distance, the way water fills a space — unhurried, without announcement, until he was beside me with his hand at the small of my back and his presence registering at a frequency that was entirely unmistakable.

His hand was warm through the fabric of my jacket. He said nothing. He did not need to.

The vendor looked at his hand.

Then at Niko's face.

Then back at his honey.

"Sygnómi," he said — sorry — with the cheerful quality of a man who was not particularly sorry but recognized the landscape and respected its geography.

He handed us a jar of thyme honey and charged us substantially less than the listed price, which I understood was an apology and a compliment simultaneously.

Niko's hand stayed at my back while we paid.

In the car on the way back up the hill, the bags between us and the olive oil bottle secured in the footwell and the afternoon sun coming through the window at the particular angle that made the city look like something from a different century, I thought about the honey vendor's expression when he looked at Niko's face.

The vendor had seen something I saw every day: the version of Niko Drakos that was not a performance.

The version that existed in the space between strategy and theater — the man who knew the cheese woman's name and had an ongoing opinion about a dispute he had no stake in and selected figs with genuine conviction and ended up carrying three bags without comment.

The version that stepped in close with one hand and no words because the words weren't needed and he knew it.

I had been telling myself, for several months now, that the thing getting under my defenses was the controlled version.

The man in the study with the maps and the whiskey.

The man who crossed the meeting room with the full weight of everything he hadn't said.

The king, the strategist, the most dangerous person in most rooms — that version I could locate in a taxonomy I understood. Power in identifiable form.

This version didn't have a shape I recognised. It just was. He just was. The man himself, outside all the architecture, in the specific Tuesday light of a covered market in Athens where everyone knew his name and his grandmother's name and his opinion about Smyrna figs.

That was the version I hadn't seen coming.

That version was, it turned out, entirely impossible to file.

I looked out the window at the city going by.

His hand had been warm.

I could still feel the specific placement of it — the weight, the warmth, the unhurried certainty.

Not possession performed for an audience.

Something more personal than that. Something that had not been for the vendor or for any room or for any signal to be sent.

Something that had simply been: his hand, my back, the quiet communication of a man who had decided I was his and was, in this specific Tuesday market light, entirely at peace with that decision.

The car pulled up the hill toward the estate.

"The Smyrna figs," he said.

I turned to look at him.

"Better in October," he said. "But these will do."

"I know," I said.

He looked at me. I looked at him.

He turned back toward the window and I turned back toward mine, and the city went on below us, indifferent and vast and, from this specific altitude with this specific warmth still present at the small of my back, entirely beside the point.

I pressed my palm flat against my leg.

My pulse said what it always said now.

I had stopped arguing with it approximately three weeks ago.

It was, all things considered, a relief.
